Ekaṃ samayaṃ āyasmā sāriputto magadhesu viharati nālakagāmake. Atha kho jambukhādako paribbājako yenāyasmā sāriputto tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā sāriputtena saddhiṃ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sāraṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho jambukhādako paribbājako āyasmantaṃ sāriputtaṃ etadavoca –
一时,具寿沙利子住在马嘎达国那喇咖村。那时,游方者詹布卡达咖前往具寿沙利子所在之处;抵达后,与具寿沙利子互相问候。交换了友好、值得忆念的谈话后,在一旁坐下。在一旁坐下的游方者詹布卡达咖对具寿沙利子这样说——
‘‘‘Nibbānaṃ, nibbāna’nti, āvuso sāriputta, vuccati. Katamaṃ nu kho, āvuso, nibbāna’’nti? ‘‘Yo kho, āvuso, rāgakkhayo dosakkhayo mohakkhayo – idaṃ vuccati nibbāna’’nti. ‘‘Atthi panāvuso, maggo atthi paṭipadā etassa nibbānassa sacchikiriyāyā’’ti? ‘‘Atthi kho, āvuso, maggo atthi paṭipadā etassa nibbānassa sacchikiriyāyā’’ti. ‘‘Katamo panāvuso, maggo katamā paṭipadā etassa nibbānassa sacchikiriyāyā’’ti? ‘‘Ayameva kho, āvuso, ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo etassa nibbānassa sacchikiriyāya, seyyathidaṃ – sammādiṭṭhi sammāsaṅkappo sammāvācā sammākammanto sammāājīvo sammāvāyāmo sammāsati sammāsamādhi. 「贤友沙利子,谁是世间的说法者,谁是世间的善行道者,谁是世间的善至者?」「贤友,凡是为了断贪而说法者、为了断嗔而说法者、为了断痴而说法者,他们是世间的说法者。贤友,凡是为了断贪而行道者、为了断嗔而行道者、为了断痴而行道者,他们是世间的善行道者。贤友,凡是贪已断、根已断、如多罗树头被截断、成为非有、未来不生之法,嗔已断、根已断、如多罗树头被截断、成为非有、未来不生之法,痴已断、根已断、如多罗树头被截断、成为非有、未来不生之法者,他们是世间的善至者。」
