112如是我闻:一时,世尊住在舍卫城祇树给孤独园。那时,憍萨罗王波斯匿来到世尊那里,和世尊互相问候,说过了亲切的问候语后,坐在一旁。坐在一旁的憍萨罗王波斯匿对世尊这样说:“乔达摩尊者,您也声称自己已证得无上正等正觉吗?”“大王,如果有人能正确地说‘已证得无上正等正觉’,那就是指我。大王,我确实已经证得了无上正等正觉。”
Evaṃ me sutaṃ – ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sāraṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho rājā pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘bhavampi no gotamo anuttaraṃ sammāsambodhiṃ abhisambuddhoti paṭijānātī’’ti? ‘‘Yañhi taṃ, mahārāja, sammā vadamāno vadeyya ‘anuttaraṃ sammāsambodhiṃ abhisambuddho’ti, mameva taṃ sammā vadamāno vadeyya. Ahañhi, mahārāja, anuttaraṃ sammāsambodhiṃ abhisambuddho’’ti.
5“乔达摩尊者,那些沙门、婆罗门有团体、有群众、有自己的老师,他们知名、有名望、被众人尊为教主,比如——富兰那迦叶、末伽梨瞿舍利、尼乾陀若提子、散若夷毘罗梨沸、波拘陀迦旃延、阿耆多翅舍钦婆罗——我曾问他们:‘你们自称已证得无上正等正觉吗?’他们都不自称已证得无上正等正觉。而乔达摩尊者您年纪轻轻,出家也才不久,却这样声称?”
‘‘Yepi te, bho gotama, samaṇabrāhmaṇā saṅghino gaṇino gaṇācariyā ñātā yasassino titthakarā sādhusammatā bahujanassa, seyyathidaṃ – pūraṇo kassapo, makkhali gosālo, nigaṇṭho nāṭaputto, sañcayo belaṭṭhaputto, pakudho kaccāyano, ajito kesakambalo; tepi mayā ‘anuttaraṃ sammāsambodhiṃ abhisambuddhoti paṭijānāthā’ti puṭṭhā samānā anuttaraṃ sammāsambodhiṃ abhisambuddhoti na paṭijānanti. Kiṃ pana bhavaṃ gotamo daharo ceva jātiyā navo ca pabbajjāyā’’ti?
6“大王,有四种年少,不应因为年少就被看不起,不应因为年少就被轻慢。哪四种?大王,刹帝利年少,不应被看不起,不应被轻慢。大王,蛇年少,不应被看不起,不应被轻慢。大王,火年少,不应被看不起,不应被轻慢。大王,比丘年少,不应被看不起,不应被轻慢。大王,这四种年少,不应因为年少就被看不起,不应因为年少就被轻慢。”
‘‘Cattāro kho me, mahārāja, daharāti na uññātabbā, daharāti na paribhotabbā. Katame cattāro? Khattiyo kho, mahārāja, daharoti na uññātabbo, daharoti na paribhotabbo. Urago kho, mahārāja, daharoti na uññātabbo, daharoti na paribhotabbo. Aggi kho, mahārāja, daharoti na uññātabbo, daharoti na paribhotabbo. Bhikkhu, kho, mahārāja, daharoti na uññātabbo, daharoti na paribhotabbo. Ime kho, mahārāja, cattāro daharāti na uññātabbā, daharāti na paribhotabbā’’ti.
7世尊这样说了。善逝这样说了之后,导师又进一步说了下面的偈颂:
Idamavoca bhagavā. Idaṃ vatvāna sugato athāparaṃ etadavoca satthā –
8“出身高贵的刹帝利,家世显赫有声名,
‘‘Khattiyaṃ jātisampannaṃ, abhijātaṃ yasassinaṃ;
9“不要因为年轻就轻视他,一个人不应该看不起他。”
Daharoti nāvajāneyya, na naṃ paribhave naro.
10因为那位人中之王,如果身为刹帝利,掌握了王权,
‘‘Ṭhānañhi so manujindo, rajjaṃ laddhāna khattiyo;
11他若被激怒,就会用王的刑罚,对那个人施以严厉的惩处。
So kuddho rājadaṇḍena, tasmiṃ pakkamate bhusaṃ;
12因此,应当避开他,以保护自己的性命。
Tasmā taṃ parivajjeyya, rakkhaṃ jīvitamattano.
13“在村庄里,或是在旷野中,无论在哪里看见了蛇,
‘‘Gāme vā yadi vā raññe, yattha passe bhujaṅgamaṃ;
14都不要因为它小就轻视它,一个人不应该看不起它。”
Daharoti nāvajāneyya, na naṃ paribhave naro.
15蛇带着种种斑纹与威光游行,
‘‘Uccāvacehi vaṇṇehi, urago carati tejasī ;
16它有时冲上前咬伤愚人,无论男女;
So āsajja ḍaṃse bālaṃ, naraṃ nāriñca ekadā;
17因此应当远离它,保护好自己的生命。
Tasmā taṃ parivajjeyya, rakkhaṃ jīvitamattano.
18那吞食众多燃料、火焰炽盛、黑烟滚滚的火,
‘‘Pahūtabhakkhaṃ jālinaṃ, pāvakaṃ kaṇhavattaniṃ;
19人不可因它初起尚小就轻视、怠慢,
Daharoti nāvajāneyya, na naṃ paribhave naro.
20因为它一旦得到足够的燃料,就会变成猛烈大火。
‘‘Laddhā hi so upādānaṃ, mahā hutvāna pāvako;
21他袭击并烧毁愚者,有时也烧男人和女人。
So āsajja ḍahe bālaṃ, naraṃ nāriñca ekadā;
22因此,为了保护自己的生命,应该避开他。
Tasmā taṃ parivajjeyya, rakkhaṃ jīvitamattano.
23当黑烟滚滚的大火焚烧森林,
‘‘Vanaṃ yadaggi ḍahati , pāvako kaṇhavattanī;
24经过昼夜,那里又会长出新枝。
Jāyanti tattha pārohā, ahorattānamaccaye.
25然而,具足戒的比丘以他的光辉燃烧时,
‘‘Yañca kho sīlasampanno, bhikkhu ḍahati tejasā;
26他的儿子、牲畜、继承人得不到他的财产。
Na tassa puttā pasavo, dāyādā vindare dhanaṃ;
27他们无儿无女,没有继承人,如同被砍断的棕榈树桩。
Anapaccā adāyādā, tālāvatthū bhavanti te.
28所以,明智的人,看到自己真正的利益后,
‘‘Tasmā hi paṇḍito poso, sampassaṃ atthamattano;
29对蛇、对火、对有名望的刹帝利,
Bhujaṅgamaṃ pāvakañca, khattiyañca yasassinaṃ;
30以及对具足戒德的比丘,都应如法地对待。
Bhikkhuñca sīlasampannaṃ, sammadeva samācare’’ti.
31这样说后,憍萨罗国王波斯匿对世尊这么说:“太殊胜了,大德!太殊胜了,大德!大德,就好像把倒下的东西扶起来,把盖住的东西掀开,给迷路的人指路,在黑暗中举起油灯,让有眼睛的人能看见东西;同样地,世尊用种种方式阐明了法。大德,我从今往后归依世尊、归依法、归依比丘僧团。请世尊接受我为近事男,从今天起一直到生命结束,我都归依。”
Evaṃ vutte, rājā pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘abhikkantaṃ, bhante, abhikkantaṃ, bhante! Seyyathāpi bhante, nikkujjitaṃ vā ukkujjeyya , paṭicchannaṃ vā vivareyya, mūḷhassa vā maggaṃ ācikkheyya , andhakāre vā telapajjotaṃ dhāreyya – ‘cakkhumanto rūpāni dakkhantī’ti; evamevaṃ bhagavatā anekapariyāyena dhammo pakāsito. Esāhaṃ, bhante, bhagavantaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi dhammañca bhikkhusaṅghañca. Upāsakaṃ maṃ, bhante, bhagavā dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṃ saraṇaṃ gata’’nti.
322. 人经
2. Purisasuttaṃ
113这件事发生在沙瓦提城。那时,憍萨罗国王波斯匿在中午时分来到世尊那里。到了之后,他礼敬世尊,坐在一旁。世尊对坐在一旁的憍萨罗国王波斯匿这样说:“大王,你中午从哪里过来?”
Sāvatthinidānaṃ. Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo divā divassa yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinnaṃ kho rājānaṃ pasenadiṃ kosalaṃ bhagavā etadavoca – ‘‘handa, kuto nu tvaṃ, mahārāja, āgacchasi divā divassā’’ti?
34大王啊,有三种东西,在一个人心里生起时,是为了损害他、为了受苦、为了不安乐而住的。哪三种呢?大王,贪这个东西,在一个人心里生起时,是为了损害他、为了受苦、为了不安乐而住的。嗔这个东西,大王,在一个人心里生起时,是为了损害他、为了受苦、为了不安乐而住的。痴这个东西,大王,在一个人心里生起时,是为了损害他、为了受苦、为了不安乐而住的。大王,就是这三种东西,在一个人心里生起时,是为了损害他、为了受苦、为了不安乐而住的。世尊说了这件事。……
‘‘Tayo kho, mahārāja, purisassa dhammā ajjhattaṃ uppajjamānā uppajjanti ahitāya dukkhāya aphāsuvihārāya. Katame tayo? Lobho kho, mahārāja, purisassa dhammo ajjhattaṃ uppajjamāno uppajjati ahitāya dukkhāya aphāsuvihārāya. Doso kho, mahārāja, purisassa dhammo ajjhattaṃ uppajjamāno uppajjati ahitāya dukkhāya aphāsuvihārāya. Moho kho, mahārāja, purisassa dhammo ajjhattaṃ uppajjamāno uppajjati ahitāya dukkhāya aphāsuvihārāya . 35贪、嗔和痴,从自身生起,
‘‘Lobho doso ca moho ca, purisaṃ pāpacetasaṃ;
36伤害那个心怀恶意之人,就像竹子的果实毁掉竹子本身一样。
Hiṃsanti attasambhūtā, tacasāraṃva samphala’’nti .
373. 老死经
3. Jarāmaraṇasuttaṃ
114在沙瓦提城。坐在一旁的憍萨罗国波斯匿王对世尊这样说:“大德,在这里,当我独处静坐时,心里生起了这样的思惟:‘对谁来说,自己是可爱的?对谁来说,自己是不可爱的?’大德,那时我这样想:‘那些用身体行恶行、用语言行恶行、用心意行恶行的人,对他们来说,自己是不可爱的。即使他们这样说:“自己是可爱的”,但对他们来说,自己仍是不可爱的。那是什么原因呢?就像不可爱的人会对不可爱的人做那些事一样,他们正是自己对自己做了同样的事;因此对他们来说,自己是不可爱的。那些用身体行善行、用语言行善行、用心意行善行的人,对他们来说,自己是可爱的。即使他们这样说:“自己是不可爱的”,但对他们来说,自己仍是可爱的。那是什么原因呢?就像可爱的人会对可爱的人做那些事一样,他们正是自己对自己做了同样的事;因此对他们来说,自己是可爱的。’”
Sāvatthinidānaṃ . Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho rājā pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘idha mayhaṃ, bhante, rahogatassa paṭisallīnassa evaṃ cetaso parivitakko udapādi – ‘kesaṃ nu kho piyo attā, kesaṃ appiyo attā’ti? Tassa mayhaṃ, bhante, etadahosi – ‘ye ca kho keci kāyena duccaritaṃ caranti, vācāya duccaritaṃ caranti, manasā duccaritaṃ caranti; tesaṃ appiyo attā’. Kiñcāpi te evaṃ vadeyyuṃ – ‘piyo no attā’ti, atha kho tesaṃ appiyo attā. Taṃ kissa hetu? Yañhi appiyo appiyassa kareyya, taṃ te attanāva attano karonti; tasmā tesaṃ appiyo attā. Ye ca kho keci kāyena sucaritaṃ caranti, vācāya sucaritaṃ caranti, manasā sucaritaṃ caranti; tesaṃ piyo attā. Kiñcāpi te evaṃ vadeyyuṃ – ‘appiyo no attā’ti; atha kho tesaṃ piyo attā. Taṃ kissa hetu? Yañhi piyo piyassa kareyya, taṃ te attanāva attano karonti; tasmā tesaṃ piyo attā’’ti.
39即使那些彩绘精美的王家车乘,也终会朽坏,
‘‘Jīranti ve rājarathā sucittā,
40而身体,也一样会走向衰老。
Atho sarīrampi jaraṃ upeti;
41善人的法,不会老去;善人们确实与善人们一起宣说。
Satañca dhammo na jaraṃ upeti,
42如果一个人知道自己可爱,就不该与恶行结合;因为作恶者想要获得快乐,那是不容易的事。
Santo have sabbhi pavedayantī’’ti.
434. 所爱经
4. Piyasuttaṃ
115故事发生在沙瓦提城。憍萨罗王波斯匿坐在一边,对世尊这样说:“尊者,已经出生的人,除了衰老和死亡之外,还有别的去处吗?”“大王,已经出生的人,除了衰老和死亡,没有别的去处。大王,那些刹帝利富豪们,有钱、财产多、受用丰足、金银无数、物资充裕、财富谷物丰饶——即使是他们,已经出生了,除了衰老和死亡,也没有别的去处。大王,那些婆罗门富豪们……那些居士富豪们,有钱、财产多、受用丰足、金银无数、物资充裕、财富谷物丰饶——即使是他们,已经出生了,除了衰老和死亡,也没有别的去处。大王,即使是那些比丘,他们是阿拉汉,断尽了烦恼,梵行已立,应作已作,放下了重担,达成了自己的目标,灭尽了再生的结缚,以正智彻底解脱——他们的这个身体,也是会坏灭的,也是终将舍弃的。”世尊说了这件事。……
Sāvatthinidānaṃ . Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho rājā pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘atthi nu kho, bhante, jātassa aññatra jarāmaraṇā’’ti? ‘‘Natthi kho, mahārāja, jātassa aññatra jarāmaraṇā. Yepi te, mahārāja, khattiyamahāsālā aḍḍhā mahaddhanā mahābhogā pahūtajātarūparajatā pahūtavittūpakaraṇā pahūtadhanadhaññā, tesampi jātānaṃ natthi aññatra jarāmaraṇā. Yepi te, mahārāja, brāhmaṇamahāsālā…pe… gahapatimahāsālā aḍḍhā mahaddhanā mahābhogā pahūtajātarūparajatā pahūtavittūpakaraṇā pahūtadhanadhaññā, tesampi jātānaṃ natthi aññatra jarāmaraṇā. Yepi te, mahārāja, bhikkhū arahanto khīṇāsavā vusitavanto katakaraṇīyā ohitabhārā anuppattasadatthā parikkhīṇabhavasaṃyojanā sammadaññāvimuttā, tesaṃ pāyaṃ kāyo bhedanadhammo nikkhepanadhammo’’ti. 46“如果一个人知道自己可爱,就不该与恶行结合;
‘‘Attānañce piyaṃ jaññā, na naṃ pāpena saṃyuje;
47因为作恶者想要获得快乐,那是不容易的事。
Na hi taṃ sulabhaṃ hoti, sukhaṃ dukkaṭakārinā.
48一个人被死亡终结、抛弃了世俗的存在后,
‘‘Antakenādhipannassa, jahato mānusaṃ bhavaṃ;
49他还有什么东西真正属于自己?又能带着什么离开?
Kiñhi tassa sakaṃ hoti, kiñca ādāya gacchati;
50又有什么会一直跟随他,像影子一样从不离去?
Kiñcassa anugaṃ hoti, chāyāva anapāyinī .
51凡夫在此生所造的福业与恶业——这两样东西,
‘‘Ubho puññañca pāpañca, yaṃ macco kurute idha;
52那才是真正属于他自己的,那才是他能带走的;
Tañhi tassa sakaṃ hoti, tañca ādāya gacchati;
53那就是会一直跟随他的,像影子一样从不离去。
Tañcassa anugaṃ hoti, chāyāva anapāyinī.
54因此,应常行善,积累来世的资粮;
‘‘Tasmā kareyya kalyāṇaṃ, nicayaṃ samparāyikaṃ;
55布施的福德在未来世,是众生安立的依靠。
Puññāni paralokasmiṃ, patiṭṭhā honti pāṇina’’nti.
565. 自护经
5. Attarakkhitasuttaṃ
116在沙瓦提城。坐在一边的憍萨罗王波斯匿对世尊这样说:“大德,今天在我独处静修的时候,心里生起这样的想法:‘这世上能得到极大财富之后,不沉醉、不放逸、不贪染欲乐、不伤害众生的众生,是少数。而得到极大财富之后,沉醉放逸、贪染欲乐、伤害众生的众生,却更多。’”
Sāvatthinidānaṃ. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho rājā pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘idha mayhaṃ, bhante, rahogatassa paṭisallīnassa evaṃ cetaso parivitakko udapādi – ‘appakā te sattā lokasmiṃ ye uḷāre uḷāre bhoge labhitvā na ceva majjanti, na ca pamajjanti, na ca kāmesu gedhaṃ āpajjanti, na ca sattesu vippaṭipajjanti. Atha kho eteva bahutarā sattā lokasmiṃ ye uḷāre uḷāre bhoge labhitvā majjanti ceva pamajjanti , ca kāmesu ca gedhaṃ āpajjanti, sattesu ca vippaṭipajjantī’’’ti.
58“正是这样,大王!正是这样,大王!大王!那些以身行恶……他们自己是未被守护的。……这是什么原因呢?大王!因为这种守护是外在的,不是内在的;所以他们自己是未被守护的。大王!那些以身行善、以口行善、以意行善的人,他们自己是被守护的。即使没有象军保护他们,没有马军保护他们,没有车军保护他们,没有步军保护他们,他们自己仍然是被守护的。这是什么原因呢?大王!因为这种守护是内在的,不是外在的;所以他们自己是被守护的。”世尊这样说……(省略)
‘‘Evametaṃ, mahārāja, evametaṃ, mahārāja! Ye hi keci, mahārāja, kāyena duccaritaṃ caranti…pe… tesaṃ arakkhito attā. Taṃ kissa hetu? Bāhirā hesā, mahārāja, rakkhā, nesā rakkhā ajjhattikā; tasmā tesaṃ arakkhito attā. Ye ca kho keci, mahārāja, kāyena sucaritaṃ caranti, vācāya sucaritaṃ caranti, manasā sucaritaṃ caranti; tesaṃ rakkhito attā. Kiñcāpi te neva hatthikāyo rakkheyya, na assakāyo rakkheyya, na rathakāyo rakkheyya, na pattikāyo rakkheyya; atha kho tesaṃ rakkhito attā. Taṃ kissa hetu? Ajjhattikā hesā, mahārāja, rakkhā, nesā rakkhā bāhirā; tasmā tesaṃ rakkhito attā’’ti. Idamavoca…pe…
59身防护是好的,语防护是好的;
‘‘Kāyena saṃvaro sādhu, sādhu vācāya saṃvaro;
60意防护是好的,遍一切处的防护是好的;
Manasā saṃvaro sādhu, sādhu sabbattha saṃvaro;
61一切处都能防护、有惭耻之心的人,才被称为真正被守护者。
Sabbattha saṃvuto lajjī, rakkhitoti pavuccatī’’ti.
626. 少经
6. Appakasuttaṃ
117在舍卫城。波斯匿王坐在一旁,对世尊这样说:“大德,刚才我独自静处时,心里生起了这样的想法:‘世尊所说的法是善说的,而这法是属于有善友、善同伴、善相交的人,不属于有恶友、恶同伴、恶相交的人。’”
Sāvatthinidānaṃ. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho rājā pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘idha mayhaṃ , bhante, rahogatassa paṭisallīnassa evaṃ cetaso parivitakko udapādi – ‘svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo, so ca kho kalyāṇamittassa kalyāṇasahāyassa kalyāṇasampavaṅkassa, no pāpamittassa no pāpasahāyassa no pāpasampavaṅkassā’’’ti.
64“正是这样,大王,正是这样,大王!大王,这世上能得到极大财富之后,不沉醉、不放逸、不贪染欲乐、不伤害众生的众生,是少数。而得到极大财富之后,沉醉放逸、贪染欲乐、伤害众生的众生,却更多。”世尊说了这番话……
‘‘Evametaṃ, mahārāja, evametaṃ, mahārāja! Appakā te, mahārāja, sattā lokasmiṃ, ye uḷāre uḷāre bhoge labhitvā na ceva majjanti, na ca pamajjanti, na ca kāmesu gedhaṃ āpajjanti, na ca sattesu vippaṭipajjanti. 65“那些沉溺于欲乐享受的人,贪着欲乐、被欲乐冲昏了头,
‘‘Sārattā kāmabhogesu, giddhā kāmesu mucchitā;
66他们没有觉察到自己已经过了头,就像鹿踏进了捕兽夹;
Atisāraṃ na bujjhanti, migā kūṭaṃva oḍḍitaṃ;
67过后他们才会尝到苦果,因为这种报应是邪恶的。”
Pacchāsaṃ kaṭukaṃ hoti, vipāko hissa pāpako’’ti.

7. Aḍḍakaraṇasuttaṃ

“大德,当世上有哪些法生起时,会为人们带来不利、痛苦、不得安乐呢?”
“大王,世上有三种法,当它们生起时,会为人们带来不利、痛苦、不得安乐。哪三种呢?
大王,贪——这是世上的法,当它生起时,就带来不利、痛苦、不得安乐。
大王,嗔——这是世上的法,当它生起时,就带来不利、痛苦、不得安乐。
大王,痴——这是世上的法,当它生起时,就带来不利、痛苦、不得安乐。
大王,这些就是世上的三种法,生起时带来不利、痛苦、不得安乐。”

8. Mallikāsuttaṃ
119舍卫城因缘。尔时,世尊患风病;具寿伍波瓦那是世尊的侍者。于是世尊对具寿伍波瓦那说:「来,伍波瓦那,你为我取温水。」「是,尊者。」具寿伍波瓦那应诺世尊后,着下衣,取钵与衣,前往天利婆罗门的住处;抵达后,默然站立一旁。天利婆罗门看见具寿伍波瓦那默然站立一旁。看见后,以偈对具寿伍波瓦那说:
Sāvatthinidānaṃ . Tena kho pana samayena rājā pasenadi kosalo mallikāya deviyā saddhiṃ uparipāsādavaragato hoti. Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo mallikaṃ deviṃ etadavoca – ‘‘atthi nu kho te, mallike, kocañño attanā piyataro’’ti? ‘‘Natthi kho me, mahārāja, kocañño attanā piyataro. Tuyhaṃ pana, mahārāja, atthañño koci attanā piyataro’’ti? ‘‘Mayhampi kho, mallike, natthañño koci attanā piyataro’’ti.
76那时,憍萨罗王波斯匿从宫殿下来,前往世尊那里。到了以后,向世尊行礼,坐在一边。坐在一边的憍萨罗王波斯匿对世尊这样说:“尊师,刚才我与玛丽嘉王后一起到了高层的宫殿,我问玛丽嘉王后:‘玛丽嘉,对你来说,有别的什么人比自己更可爱吗?’这样问的时候,尊师,玛丽嘉王后对我说:‘大王,没有别的什么人比自己更可爱。但大王你呢,有别的什么人比自己更可爱吗?’被她这样问,尊师,我对玛丽嘉王后说:‘玛丽嘉,对我来说,也没有别的什么人比自己更可爱。’”
Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo pāsādā orohitvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho rājā pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘idhāhaṃ, bhante, mallikāya deviyā saddhiṃ uparipāsādavaragato mallikaṃ deviṃ etadavocaṃ – ‘atthi nu kho te, mallike, kocañño attanā piyataro’ti? 78“用心寻遍了一切方向,
‘‘Sabbā disā anuparigamma cetasā,
79在任何地方都找不到比自己更可爱的;
Nevajjhagā piyataramattanā kvaci;
80别人也都同样是如此爱自己,
Evaṃ piyo puthu attā paresaṃ,
81因此,爱自己的人不应去伤害他人。”
Tasmā na hiṃse paramattakāmo’’ti.
829. 祭祀经
9. Yaññasuttaṃ
120这事儿发生在沙瓦提城。那时候,憍萨罗国波斯匿王正准备一场大祭祀:五百头公牛、五百头小公牛、五百头小母牛、五百只山羊、五百只公羊,全都已经被绑在了柱子上,就等着被杀来祭祀。而那些他的奴隶、仆人和劳工,被棍棒威胁着,被恐惧笼罩着,一个个哭丧着脸,一边掉眼泪一边做着祭祀的准备工作。
Sāvatthinidānaṃ. Tena kho pana samayena rañño pasenadissa kosalassa mahāyañño paccupaṭṭhito hoti, pañca ca usabhasatāni pañca ca vacchatarasatāni pañca ca vacchatarisatāni pañca ca ajasatāni pañca ca urabbhasatāni thūṇūpanītāni honti yaññatthāya. Yepissa te honti dāsāti vā pessāti vā kammakarāti vā, tepi daṇḍatajjitā bhayatajjitā assumukhā rudamānā parikammāni karonti.
84这时候,一群比丘在午前穿好僧袍,拿着钵和衣,走进沙瓦提城去托钵。在沙瓦提城里托完钵,吃完饭,从托钵处回来后,就去拜见世尊。到了以后,向世尊行礼,然后坐在一边。这些比丘在一旁坐定后,就对世尊说:「尊者,憍萨罗国波斯匿王正在准备一场大祭祀,五百头公牛、五百头小公牛、五百头小母牛、五百只山羊、五百只公羊,全都被绑在柱子上等着宰杀。那些他的奴隶、仆人和劳工,也被棍棒吓着、被恐惧逼着,满脸是泪地哭着干各种活。」
Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū pubbaṇhasamayaṃ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya sāvatthiṃ piṇḍāya pavisiṃsu. Sāvatthiyaṃ piṇḍāya caritvā pacchābhattaṃ piṇḍapātapaṭikkantā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho te bhikkhū bhagavantaṃ etadavocuṃ – ‘‘idha, bhante, rañño pasenadissa kosalassa mahāyañño paccupaṭṭhito hoti, pañca ca usabhasatāni pañca ca vacchatarasatāni pañca ca vacchatarisatāni pañca ca ajasatāni pañca ca urabbhasatāni thūṇūpanītāni honti yaññatthāya . 86「马祭、人祭、撒马巴撒、瓦阇贝雅、尼拉格拉,这些盛大的祭祀仪式,耗费巨大,事相繁琐,却不会带来大果报。
‘‘Assamedhaṃ purisamedhaṃ, sammāpāsaṃ vājapeyyaṃ niraggaḷhaṃ;
87「在这些祭祀中,羊和山羊、牛等各种各样的动物被宰杀,
Mahāyaññā mahārambhā , na te honti mahapphalā.
88在这种屠杀各种各样众生的大祭祀中,那些正直地走在修行路上的人,不会去参加。
‘‘Ajeḷakā ca gāvo ca, vividhā yattha haññare;
89那种不正确的祭祀,圣者们不参加。
Na taṃ sammaggatā yaññaṃ, upayanti mahesino.
90那些没有残害的祭祀,人们一直随顺地举行;
‘‘Ye ca yaññā nirārambhā, yajanti anukulaṃ sadā;
91在那里,种种羊和牛都不被杀害;
Ajeḷakā ca gāvo ca, vividhā nettha haññare;
92这种正确举行的祭祀,圣者们参加。
Etaṃ sammaggatā yaññaṃ, upayanti mahesino.
93智者应当举行这种祭祀,这种祭祀有大果报;
‘‘Etaṃ yajetha medhāvī, eso yañño mahapphalo;
94因为举行这种祭祀的人,只会变得更好,不会变得更坏。
Etañhi yajamānassa, seyyo hoti na pāpiyo;
95祭祀盛大,诸天因此喜悦。
Yañño ca vipulo hoti, pasīdanti ca devatā’’ti.

121那时,憍萨罗国波斯匿王正在捆绑许多人:有些人用绳子绑,有些人用脚镣铐,有些人用锁链锁。
Tena kho pana samayena raññā pasenadinā kosalena mahājanakāyo bandhāpito hoti, appekacce rajjūhi appekacce andūhi appekacce saṅkhalikāhi.
98那时,众多比丘在午前时刻披好衣,拿了钵和袈裟,进入沙瓦提城托钵乞食。在沙瓦提城托钵乞食后,吃完饭,从托钵处返回,便来到世尊那里。到了之后,向世尊礼敬,坐在一边。坐在一边后,那些比丘对世尊这样说:
Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū pubbaṇhasamayaṃ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya sāvatthiṃ piṇḍāya pavisiṃsu. Sāvatthiyaṃ piṇḍāya caritvā pacchābhattaṃ piṇḍapātapaṭikkantā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu. Ekamantaṃ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū bhagavantaṃ etadavocuṃ –
99那时,世尊知道了这个意思,就在那个时刻,诵出了这些偈颂:

100“智者说:那不算是坚固的束缚——
‘‘Na taṃ daḷhaṃ bandhanamāhu dhīrā,
101那由铁、木、藤所制的束缚;
Yadāyasaṃ dārujaṃ pabbajañca;
102沉溺执着于宝珠与耳饰,
Sārattarattā maṇikuṇḍalesu,
103对儿女家室的期盼与牵挂,
Puttesu dāresu ca yā apekkhā.
104这,被智者们称为坚固的束缚,
‘‘Etaṃ daḷhaṃ bandhanamāhu dhīrā,
105下沉的拖累,看似松弛,却难以挣脱。
Ohārinaṃ sithilaṃ duppamuñcaṃ;
106斩断这个之后,人们便云游而去,
Etampi chetvāna paribbajanti,
107放下感官的欲乐,无牵无挂。
Anapekkhino kāmasukhaṃ pahāyā’’ti.

122有一次,世尊住在沙瓦提城的东园鹿母讲堂。那时,世尊在傍晚时分从独处禅修中出来,坐在外门附近。当时,高沙喇国王巴谢那地来到世尊那里,向世尊行礼后,坐在一边。
Ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati pubbārāme migāramātupāsāde. Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā sāyanhasamayaṃ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito bahidvārakoṭṭhake nisinno hoti. Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi.
117就在那时,七个结发苦行者、七个尼干陀、七个裸体者、七个穿一衣者以及七个游方者,他们都毛发蓬乱,腋下夹着担子,从世尊的不远处经过。于是,高沙喇国王巴谢那地从座位上站起来,把上衣搭在一肩,右膝跪在地上,朝着那七个结发苦行者、七个尼干陀、七个裸体者、七个穿一衣者以及七个游方者的方向合掌,连续三次通报名字:'尊者,我是高沙喇国王巴谢那地……尊者,我是高沙喇国王巴谢那地。'
Tena kho pana samayena satta ca jaṭilā satta ca nigaṇṭhā satta ca acelakā satta ca ekasāṭakā satta ca paribbājakā parūḷhakacchanakhalomā khārivividhamādāya bhagavato avidūre atikkamanti. Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo uṭṭhāyāsanā ekaṃsaṃ uttarāsaṅgaṃ karitvā dakkhiṇajāṇumaṇḍalaṃ pathaviyaṃ nihantvā yena te satta ca jaṭilā satta ca nigaṇṭhā satta ca acelakā satta ca ekasāṭakā satta ca paribbājakā tenañjaliṃ paṇāmetvā tikkhattuṃ nāmaṃ sāvesi – ‘‘rājāhaṃ, bhante, pasenadi kosalo…pe… rājāhaṃ, bhante, pasenadi kosalo’’ti.
118那时,就在那七位结发行者、七位尼干陀、七位裸行者、七位一衣行者、七位游行者离开后不久,憍萨罗国王波斯匿来到世尊那里。到了之后,向世尊礼敬,然后坐在一边。坐在一边的憍萨罗国王波斯匿对世尊这样说:“尊者,这世上的那些人,他们当中某些人是阿拉汉,或是已经进入了阿拉汉道吧?”
Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo acirapakkantesu tesu sattasu ca jaṭilesu sattasu ca nigaṇṭhesu sattasu ca acelakesu sattasu ca ekasāṭakesu sattasu ca paribbājakesu yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho rājā pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘ye te, bhante, loke arahanto vā arahattamaggaṃ vā samāpannā ete tesaṃ aññatarā’’ti.
119“大王,这很难判断啊——你是在家人,享受欲乐,过着有妻小拥挤床铺的生活,享用着迦尸国的檀香,佩戴着花环、香料、香膏,接受金银。由你这样的人来判断‘这些是阿拉汉,或者这些是进入了阿拉汉道’,是很难的。”
‘‘Dujjānaṃ kho etaṃ, mahārāja, tayā gihinā kāmabhoginā puttasambādhasayanaṃ ajjhāvasantena kāsikacandanaṃ paccanubhontena mālāgandhavilepanaṃ dhārayantena jātarūparajataṃ sādiyantena – ‘ime vā arahanto, ime vā arahattamaggaṃ samāpannā’’’ti.
120“大王,戒,要通过共住才能知道。而且是要经过长时间,不是短时间;是要用心观察的人,不是不用心的人;是有智慧的人,不是没有智慧的人。大王,内心的清净,要通过交谈才能知道。而且是要经过长时间,不是短时间;是要用心观察的人,不是不用心的人;是有智慧的人,不是没有智慧的人。大王,一个人的力量,要在危难中才能知道。而且是要经过长时间,不是短时间;是要用心观察的人,不是不用心的人;是有智慧的人,不是没有智慧的人。大王,智慧,要通过讨论才能知道。而且是要经过长时间,不是短时间;是要用心观察的人,不是不用心的人;是有智慧的人,不是没有智慧的人。”
‘‘Saṃvāsena kho, mahārāja, sīlaṃ veditabbaṃ. Tañca kho dīghena addhunā, na ittaraṃ; manasikarotā, no amanasikarotā; paññavatā, no duppaññena. Saṃvohārena kho, mahārāja, soceyyaṃ veditabbaṃ. Tañca kho dīghena addhunā, na ittaraṃ; manasikarotā, no amanasikarotā; paññavatā, no duppaññena. Āpadāsu kho, mahārāja, thāmo veditabbo. Yāva subhāsitamidaṃ, bhante, bhagavatā – ‘dujjānaṃ kho etaṃ, mahārāja, tayā gihinā kāmabhoginā puttasambādhasayanaṃ ajjhāvasantena kāsikacandanaṃ paccanubhontena mālāgandhavilepanaṃ dhārayantena jātarūparajataṃ sādiyantena – ime vā arahanto, ime vā arahattamaggaṃ samāpannā’ti. 122“尊者,这些人是我的手下,是我的密探。他们去各地侦察后回来,先由他们收集情报,之后我才去平定。现在呢,尊者,他们已经洗掉了那些尘垢,洗得干干净净,涂好香油,理好了须发,穿着白衣,具足、享受着五种欲乐了。”
‘‘Ete, bhante, mama purisā carā ocarakā janapadaṃ ocaritvā āgacchanti. Tehi paṭhamaṃ ociṇṇaṃ ahaṃ pacchā osāpayissāmi . Idāni te, bhante, taṃ rajojallaṃ pavāhetvā sunhātā suvilittā kappitakesamassū odātavatthā pañcahi kāmaguṇehi samappitā samaṅgībhūtā paricāressantī’’ti.
123那时,世尊了解这件事的意义后,在那个时候说出了这些偈颂:
Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṃ viditvā tāyaṃ velāyaṃ imā gāthāyo abhāsi –
124不能凭外貌就彻底了解一个人,
‘‘Na vaṇṇarūpena naro sujāno,
125不能因短暂的见面就信任;
Na vissase ittaradassanena;
126因为善于自我约束的人,借着外在的举止,
Susaññatānañhi viyañjanena,
127而缺乏约束的人也一样混迹于这个世间,
Asaññatā lokamimaṃ caranti.
128就像黏土做的假耳环,
‘‘Patirūpako mattikākuṇḍalova,
129就像镀了金的半文铜钱。
Lohaḍḍhamāsova suvaṇṇachanno;

131他们在世间行走,被随从簇拥遮蔽,

1332. 五王经
2. Pañcarājasuttaṃ
123舍卫城因缘。那时,以波斯匿王为首的五位国王,正沉浸在五种欲乐中,具足受用,享乐游玩,他们之间生起了这样的议论:“到底什么才是欲乐中最胜的?”其中有人这样说:“色是欲乐中最胜的。”有人这样说:“声是欲乐中最胜的。”有人这样说:“香是欲乐中最胜的。”有人这样说:“味是欲乐中最胜的。”有人这样说:“触是欲乐中最胜的。”那些国王彼此都没能说服对方。
Sāvatthinidānaṃ . Tena kho pana samayena pañcannaṃ rājūnaṃ pasenadipamukhānaṃ pañcahi kāmaguṇehi samappitānaṃ samaṅgībhūtānaṃ paricārayamānānaṃ ayamantarākathā udapādi – ‘‘kiṃ nu kho kāmānaṃ agga’’nti? Tatrekacce evamāhaṃsu – ‘‘rūpā kāmānaṃ agga’’nti. Ekacce evamāhaṃsu – ‘‘saddā kāmānaṃ agga’’nti. Ekacce evamāhaṃsu – ‘‘gandhā kāmānaṃ agga’’nti. Ekacce evamāhaṃsu – ‘‘rasā kāmānaṃ agga’’nti. Ekacce evamāhaṃsu – ‘‘phoṭṭhabbā kāmānaṃ agga’’nti. Yato kho te rājāno nāsakkhiṃsu aññamaññaṃ saññāpetuṃ.
135于是,憍萨罗王波斯匿对那些国王这样说:“朋友们,我们去世尊那里吧。到了之后,就这件事请教世尊。世尊怎么解答,我们就怎么受持它。”“好的,朋友。”那些国王回答憍萨罗王波斯匿。
Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo te rājāno etadavoca – ‘‘āyāma, mārisā, yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamissāma; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ etamatthaṃ paṭipucchissāma. Yathā no bhagavā byākarissati tathā naṃ dhāressāmā’’ti . ‘‘Evaṃ, mārisā’’ti kho te rājāno rañño pasenadissa kosalassa paccassosuṃ.
136于是,以波斯匿王为首的五位国王前往世尊那里。到了之后,向世尊礼敬,坐在一旁。坐在一旁的憍萨罗王波斯匿对世尊这样说:“大德,在这里,我们五位国王正沉浸在五种欲乐中,具足受用,享乐游玩,我们之间生起了这样的议论:‘到底什么才是欲乐中最胜的?’其中有人说:‘色是欲乐中最胜的。’有人说:‘声是欲乐中最胜的。’有人说:‘香是欲乐中最胜的。’有人说:‘味是欲乐中最胜的。’有人说:‘触是欲乐中最胜的。’大德,到底什么才是欲乐中最胜的呢?”
Atha kho te pañca rājāno pasenadipamukhā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho rājā pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘idha, bhante, amhākaṃ pañcannaṃ rājūnaṃ pañcahi kāmaguṇehi samappitānaṃ samaṅgībhūtānaṃ paricārayamānānaṃ ayamantarākathā udapādi – ‘kiṃ nu kho kāmānaṃ agga’nti? Ekacce evamāhaṃsu – ‘rūpā kāmānaṃ agga’nti. Ekacce evamāhaṃsu – ‘saddā kāmānaṃ agga’nti. Ekacce evamāhaṃsu – ‘gandhā kāmānaṃ agga’nti. Ekacce evamāhaṃsu – ‘rasā kāmānaṃ agga’nti. Ekacce evamāhaṃsu – ‘phoṭṭhabbā kāmānaṃ agga’nti. Kiṃ nu kho, bhante, kāmānaṃ agga’’nti?
137“大王,我说,在五种欲乐中,以合意为边界才是‘最胜’。大王,那些色,对某个人是合意的,同样的色,对另一个人却是不合意的。当一个人对某些色感到心满意足、意愿圆满时,他便不再希望其他色比这些更殊胜或更美妙。对他来说,那些色就是最高的,那些色就是无上的。”
‘‘Manāpapariyantaṃ khvāhaṃ, mahārāja, pañcasu kāmaguṇesu agganti vadāmi. Teva , mahārāja, rūpā ekaccassa manāpā honti, teva rūpā ekaccassa amanāpā honti. Yehi ca yo phoṭṭhabbehi attamano hoti paripuṇṇasaṅkappo, so tehi phoṭṭhabbehi aññaṃ phoṭṭhabbaṃ uttaritaraṃ vā paṇītataraṃ vā na pattheti. Te tassa phoṭṭhabbā paramā honti. Te tassa phoṭṭhabbā anuttarā hontī’’ti.
142那时,有一位名叫旃檀额利葛的居士坐在那会众当中。这时,旃檀额利葛居士从座位上站起身来,把袈裟搭在一肩,向世尊合掌行礼,然后对世尊这样说:"世尊,我想说几句;善逝,我想说几句。"世尊说:"旃檀额利葛,你说吧。"
Tena kho pana samayena candanaṅgaliko upāsako tassaṃ parisāyaṃ nisinno hoti. Atha kho candanaṅgaliko upāsako uṭṭhāyāsanā ekaṃsaṃ uttarāsaṅgaṃ karitvā yena bhagavā tenañjaliṃ paṇāmetvā bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘paṭibhāti maṃ bhagavā, paṭibhāti maṃ sugatā’’ti. ‘‘Paṭibhātu taṃ candanaṅgalikā’’ti bhagavā avoca.
143于是,旃檀额利葛居士在世尊面前用一首相应的偈颂称赞道:
Atha kho candanaṅgaliko upāsako bhagavato sammukhā tadanurūpāya gāthāya abhitthavi –
144就像芬芳的红莲花,清晨绽放,散发着纯净的香气——你看那光明照耀的安吉罗萨,在虚空之中如烈日般燃烧。
‘‘Padumaṃ yathā kokanadaṃ sugandhaṃ,
145接着,那五位国王用五件上衣覆盖了在家信徒旃达南伽利卡。然后,在家信徒旃达南伽利卡又用这五件上衣覆盖了世尊。
Pāto siyā phullamavītagandhaṃ;
146这件事发生在沙瓦提城。那时,国萨罗王波斯匿吃了一桶量的米饭。饭后,他喘着粗气,来到世尊那里。到了之后,向世尊行礼,坐在一旁。
Aṅgīrasaṃ passa virocamānaṃ,
147如日照耀于虚空。」

148那时彼等五位国王以五件上衣覆盖栴檀迦利近事男。那时栴檀迦利近事男以彼等五件上衣覆盖世尊。

124舍卫城因缘。那时国憍萨罗王波斯匿食一桶饭。那时国憍萨罗王波斯匿饱食、气喘吁吁地前往世尊之处,礼敬世尊后坐于一旁。
Sāvatthinidānaṃ. Tena kho pana samayena rājā pasenadi kosalo doṇapākakuraṃ bhuñjati. Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo bhuttāvī mahassāsī yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi.
151那时,世尊知道憍萨罗国王波斯匿已经吃饱,而且粗重地喘息着,就在那个时候,说了这个偈颂:
Atha kho bhagavā rājānaṃ pasenadiṃ kosalaṃ bhuttāviṃ mahassāsiṃ viditvā tāyaṃ velāyaṃ imaṃ gāthaṃ abhāsi –
152对于常具念的人,
‘‘Manujassa sadā satīmato,
153对于知道适量进食的人,
Mattaṃ jānato laddhabhojane;
154他的感受变得微细,
Tanukassa bhavanti vedanā,
155缓慢地老去,守护着寿命。
Saṇikaṃ jīrati āyupālaya’’nti.
156就在那时,苏达色那青年正站在憍萨罗国王波斯匿的身后。于是,憍萨罗国王波斯匿对苏达色那青年说:“来吧,亲爱的苏达色那,你去世尊跟前把这个偈颂学会,然后在我用餐时念给我听。我会每天固定布施给你一百个迦哈波那。”“是的,大王。”苏达色那青年答应憍萨罗国王波斯匿后,在世尊跟前学会了这个偈颂,便在憍萨罗国王波斯匿用餐时真的念诵起来。
Tena kho pana samayena sudassano māṇavo rañño pasenadissa kosalassa piṭṭhito ṭhito hoti. Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo sudassanaṃ māṇavaṃ āmantesi – ‘‘ehi tvaṃ, tāta sudassana, bhagavato santike imaṃ gāthaṃ pariyāpuṇitvā mama bhattābhihāre (bhattābhihāre) bhāsa. Ahañca te devasikaṃ kahāpaṇasataṃ (kahāpaṇasataṃ) niccaṃ bhikkhaṃ pavattayissāmī’’ti. ‘‘Evaṃ devā’’ti kho sudassano māṇavo rañño pasenadissa kosalassa paṭissutvā bhagavato santike imaṃ gāthaṃ pariyāpuṇitvā rañño pasenadissa kosalassa bhattābhihāre sudaṃ bhāsati –
157“对于始终具足正念的人,
‘‘Manujassa sadā satīmato,
158在获得食物时知道适量的人,
Mattaṃ jānato laddhabhojane;
159他的感受会变得轻微,
Tanukassa bhavanti vedanā,
160他慢慢地消化,并能保护寿命。”
Saṇikaṃ jīrati āyupālaya’’nti.
161那时,憍萨罗国波斯匿王渐渐地把一那利饭作为最高食量。过了一段时间,憍萨罗国波斯匿王身体变得相当消瘦,他用手抚摸着自己的肢体,在那时发出了这样的感叹:'那位世尊确实从两方面利益了我——既在现世的利益上,也在来世的利益上。'
Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo anupubbena nāḷikodanaparamatāya saṇṭhāsi. Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo aparena samayena susallikhitagatto pāṇinā gattāni anumajjanto tāyaṃ velāyaṃ imaṃ udānaṃ udānesi – ‘‘ubhayena vata maṃ so bhagavā atthena anukampi – diṭṭhadhammikena ceva atthena samparāyikena cā’’ti.

4. Paṭhamasaṅgāmasuttaṃ
125缘起舍卫城。那时,马嘎塔国未生怨韦提希子王整备好四兵军,向憍萨罗国波斯匿王进发,前往咖西。憍萨罗国波斯匿王听说:'听说马嘎塔国未生怨韦提希子王整备好四兵军,来攻打我了,朝咖西方向来了。'于是,憍萨罗国波斯匿王也整备好四兵军,迎战马嘎塔国未生怨韦提希子王,前往咖西。那时,马嘎塔国未生怨韦提希子王与憍萨罗国波斯匿王交战了。就在那场战斗中,马嘎塔国未生怨韦提希子王打败了憍萨罗国波斯匿王。战败的憍萨罗国波斯匿王就逃回了自己的王都舍卫城。
Sāvatthinidānaṃ. Atha kho rājā māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto caturaṅginiṃ senaṃ sannayhitvā rājānaṃ pasenadiṃ kosalaṃ abbhuyyāsi yena kāsi. Assosi kho rājā pasenadi kosalo – ‘‘rājā kira māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto caturaṅginiṃ senaṃ sannayhitvā mamaṃ abbhuyyāto yena kāsī’’ti. Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo caturaṅginiṃ senaṃ sannayhitvā rājānaṃ māgadhaṃ ajātasattuṃ vedehiputtaṃ paccuyyāsi yena kāsi. Atha kho rājā ca māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto rājā ca pasenadi kosalo saṅgāmesuṃ. Tasmiṃ kho pana saṅgāme rājā māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto rājānaṃ pasenadiṃ kosalaṃ parājesi. Parājito ca rājā pasenadi kosalo sakameva rājadhāniṃ sāvatthiṃ paccuyyāsi .
164那时,众多比丘在午前穿好下衣,拿着钵和衣,进入沙瓦提城托钵。在沙瓦提城托钵完毕,吃过饭后,从托钵返回,来到世尊这里。到了之后,向世尊行礼,坐在一旁。坐在一旁后,那些比丘对世尊这样说:
Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū pubbaṇhasamayaṃ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya sāvatthiṃ piṇḍāya pavisiṃsu. Sāvatthiyaṃ piṇḍāya caritvā pacchābhattaṃ piṇḍapātapaṭikkantā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu. Ekamantaṃ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū bhagavantaṃ etadavocuṃ –
165“尊者,在这里,马嘎塔国王阿迦答沙都·韦代希子集结了四兵军,向高沙喇国王巴谢那迪进攻,朝着咖西方向进发。尊者,高沙喇国王巴谢那迪听说:‘听说马嘎塔国王阿迦答沙都·韦代希子集结了四兵军,向我进攻,朝着咖西方向来了。’尊者,那时高沙喇国王巴谢那迪集结了四兵军,迎击马嘎塔国王阿迦答沙都·韦代希子,朝着咖西方向进发。尊者,那时马嘎塔国王阿迦答沙都·韦代希子和高沙喇国王巴谢那迪会战了。然而在那场会战中,尊者,马嘎塔国王阿迦答沙都·韦代希子打败了高沙喇国王巴谢那迪。兵败之后,尊者,高沙喇国王巴谢那迪退回了自己的王城沙瓦提。”
‘‘Idha, bhante, rājā māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto caturaṅginiṃ senaṃ sannayhitvā rājānaṃ pasenadiṃ kosalaṃ abbhuyyāsi yena kāsi. Atha kho, bhante, rājā ca māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto rājā ca pasenadi kosalo saṅgāmesuṃ. Tasmiṃ kho pana, bhante, saṅgāme rājā māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto rājānaṃ pasenadiṃ kosalaṃ parājesi. Parājito ca, bhante, rājā pasenadi kosalo sakameva rājadhāniṃ sāvatthiṃ paccuyyāsī’’ti.
166世尊说:“比丘们,马嘎塔国王阿迦答沙都·韦代希子是恶友、恶同伴、恶相与;而高沙喇国王巴谢那迪,比丘们,是善友、善同伴、善相与。今天,比丘们,高沙喇国王巴谢那迪作为战败者,这一夜会睡得很痛苦。”“胜利滋生怨仇,战败者痛苦而卧。”
‘‘Rājā, bhikkhave, māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto pāpamitto pāpasahāyo pāpasampavaṅko; rājā ca kho, bhikkhave, pasenadi kosalo kalyāṇamitto kalyāṇasahāyo kalyāṇasampavaṅko. Ajjeva , bhikkhave , rājā pasenadi kosalo imaṃ rattiṃ dukkhaṃ seti parājito’’ti. Idamavoca…pe…

168那时,马嘎塔国王阿迦答沙都·韦代希子集结了四兵军,向高沙喇国王巴谢那迪进攻,朝着咖西方向进发。高沙喇国王巴谢那迪听说:“听说马嘎塔国王阿迦答沙都·韦代希子集结了四兵军,向我进攻,朝着咖西方向来了。”那时高沙喇国王巴谢那迪集结了四兵军,迎击马嘎塔国王阿迦答沙都·韦代希子,朝着咖西方向进发。那时马嘎塔国王阿迦答沙都·韦代希子和高沙喇国王巴谢那迪会战了。然而在那场会战中,高沙喇国王巴谢那迪打败了马嘎塔国王阿迦答沙都·韦代希子,并且把他活捉了。那时,高沙喇国王巴谢那迪心里想:“虽然这位马嘎塔国王阿迦答沙都·韦代希子背叛了我这个没有背叛他的人,但他毕竟是我的外甥。不如我把马嘎塔国王阿迦答沙都·韦代希子的所有象军都收缴过来,把所有马军都收缴过来,把所有战车军都收缴过来,把所有步军都收缴过来,然后放他一条生路。”

126那时摩揭陀国王韦提希子未生怨召集四军,进攻国憍萨罗王波斯匿至迦尸国。国憍萨罗王波斯匿听闻:「据说摩揭陀国王韦提希子未生怨召集四军,前来进攻我至迦尸国。」那时国憍萨罗王波斯匿亦召集四军,迎战摩揭陀国王韦提希子未生怨至迦尸国。那时摩揭陀国王韦提希子未生怨与国憍萨罗王波斯匿交战。于彼战役中,国憍萨罗王波斯匿击败摩揭陀国王韦提希子未生怨,并活捉彼。那时国憍萨罗王波斯匿如是思:「虽然此摩揭陀国王韦提希子未生怨对我这无害者行害,然而彼是我之外甥。我何不夺取摩揭陀国王韦提希子未生怨之全部象军、全部马军、全部车军、全部步军,而释放其性命?」
Atha kho rājā māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto caturaṅginiṃ senaṃ sannayhitvā rājānaṃ pasenadiṃ kosalaṃ abbhuyyāsi yena kāsi. Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo caturaṅginiṃ senaṃ sannayhitvā rājānaṃ māgadhaṃ ajātasattuṃ vedehiputtaṃ paccuyyāsi yena kāsi. Atha kho rājā ca māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto rājā ca pasenadi kosalo saṅgāmesuṃ. Tasmiṃ kho pana saṅgāme rājā pasenadi kosalo rājānaṃ māgadhaṃ ajātasattuṃ vedehiputtaṃ parājesi, jīvaggāhañca naṃ aggahesi. Atha kho rañño pasenadissa kosalassa etadahosi – ‘‘kiñcāpi kho myāyaṃ rājā māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto adubbhantassa dubbhati, atha ca pana me bhāgineyyo hoti. Yaṃnūnāhaṃ rañño māgadhassa ajātasattuno vedehiputtassa sabbaṃ hatthikāyaṃ pariyādiyitvā sabbaṃ assakāyaṃ pariyādiyitvā sabbaṃ rathakāyaṃ pariyādiyitvā sabbaṃ pattikāyaṃ pariyādiyitvā jīvantameva naṃ osajjeyya’’nti .
171那时,国憍萨罗王波斯匿夺走了摩揭陀王阿闍世韦提希子的全部象军、夺走了全部马军、夺走了全部车军、夺走了全部步军之后,把他活着放走了。
Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo rañño māgadhassa ajātasattuno vedehiputtassa sabbaṃ hatthikāyaṃ pariyādiyitvā sabbaṃ assakāyaṃ pariyādiyitvā sabbaṃ rathakāyaṃ pariyādiyitvā sabbaṃ pattikāyaṃ pariyādiyitvā jīvantameva naṃ osajji .
172那时,众多比丘在午前穿好下衣,拿着衣钵进入舍卫城乞食。在舍卫城乞食完毕,吃完饭后从托钵归来,便前往世尊那里。到了之后,礼敬世尊,坐在一边。坐在一边后,那些比丘对世尊说:“大德,就在这里,憍萨罗国波斯匿王捆绑了许多人:有些人用绳子绑,有些人用脚镣铐,有些人用锁链锁。”
Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū pubbaṇhasamayaṃ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya sāvatthiṃ piṇḍāya pavisiṃsu. Sāvatthiyaṃ piṇḍāya caritvā pacchābhattaṃ piṇḍapātapaṭikkantā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu. Ekamantaṃ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū bhagavantaṃ etadavocuṃ – ‘‘idha, bhante, raññā pasenadinā kosalena mahājanakāyo bandhāpito, appekacce rajjūhi appekacce andūhi appekacce saṅkhalikāhī’’ti.
173“大德,在这里,摩揭陀王阿闍世韦提希子集结了四支军队,向国憍萨罗王波斯匿进发,朝着咖西方向。大德,国憍萨罗王波斯匿听说了:‘摩揭陀王阿闍世韦提希子集结了四支军队,据说正向我进发,朝着咖西方向。’大德,那时国憍萨罗王波斯匿也集结了四支军队,迎战摩揭陀王阿闍世韦提希子,朝着咖西方向。大德,接着摩揭陀王阿闍世韦提希子与国憍萨罗王波斯匿交战。大德,在那场战斗中,国憍萨罗王波斯匿击败了摩揭陀王阿闍世韦提希子,把他活捉了。大德,那时国憍萨罗王波斯匿心里这么想:‘虽然这位摩揭陀王阿闍世韦提希子对我这没有害他心的人使坏,但他毕竟是我的外甥。我何不把摩揭陀王阿闍世韦提希子的全部象军夺走、把全部马军、全部车军、全部步军夺走之后,把他活着放走呢?’”

Tasmiṃ kho pana, bhante, saṅgāme rājā pasenadi kosalo rājānaṃ māgadhaṃ ajātasattuṃ vedehiputtaṃ parājesi, jīvaggāhañca naṃ aggahesi. Atha kho, bhante, rañño pasenadissa kosalassa etadahosi – ‘kiñcāpi kho myāyaṃ rājā māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto adubbhantassa dubbhati, atha ca pana me bhāgineyyo hoti. Yaṃnūnāhaṃ rañño māgadhassa ajātasattuno vedehiputtassa sabbaṃ hatthikāyaṃ pariyādiyitvā sabbaṃ assakāyaṃ sabbaṃ rathakāyaṃ sabbaṃ pattikāyaṃ pariyādiyitvā jīvantameva naṃ osajjeyya’’’nti.
174“大德,接着国憍萨罗王波斯匿把摩揭陀王阿闍世韦提希子的全部象军夺走、全部马军夺走、全部车军夺走、全部步军夺走之后,把他活着放走了。”那时,世尊知道了这件事的义理,就在那个时刻说了这些偈颂:
‘‘Atha kho, bhante, rājā pasenadi kosalo rañño māgadhassa ajātasattuno vedehiputtassa sabbaṃ hatthikāyaṃ pariyādiyitvā sabbaṃ assakāyaṃ pariyādiyitvā sabbaṃ rathakāyaṃ pariyādiyitvā sabbaṃ pattikāyaṃ pariyādiyitvā jīvantameva naṃ osajjī’’ti. 175“一个人确实会尽情掠夺,只要他还能从中得利;
‘‘Vilumpateva puriso, yāvassa upakappati;
176可是当别人来掠夺时,那掠夺者就被掠夺了。
Yadā caññe vilumpanti, so vilutto viluppati .
177只要恶果还没成熟,愚人就觉得这事可行。
‘‘Ṭhānañhi maññati bālo, yāva pāpaṃ na paccati;
178可一旦恶果成熟,他就尝到苦头。
Yadā ca paccati pāpaṃ, atha dukkhaṃ nigacchati.
179杀人者会遇到杀他的人,征服者会遇到征服他的人;
‘‘Hantā labhati hantāraṃ, jetāraṃ labhate jayaṃ;
180骂人者会被反骂,恼人者会被反恼。
Akkosako ca akkosaṃ, rosetārañca rosako;
181这样,随着业的轮转,那抢夺者反被抢夺。
Atha kammavivaṭṭena, so vilutto viluppatī’’ti.

6. Mallikāsuttaṃ
127在沙瓦提城。那时,憍萨罗国波斯匿王前往世尊所在处。到了以后,向世尊礼敬,然后坐在一旁。世尊对坐在一旁的憍萨罗国波斯匿王这样说:'大王,世间存在这四种人。哪四种?从黑暗走向黑暗的人,从黑暗走向光明的人,从光明走向黑暗的人,从光明走向光明的人。'
Sāvatthinidānaṃ . Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinnaṃ kho rājānaṃ pasenadiṃ kosalaṃ bhagavā etadavoca – ‘‘cattārome, mahārāja, puggalā santo saṃvijjamānā lokasmiṃ. Katame cattāro? Tamotamaparāyano, tamojotiparāyano, jotitamaparāyano, jotijotiparāyano’’.
184那时,世尊察觉到憍萨罗王波斯匿心中不快,便在那个时刻说了这些偈颂:

185“有的女人,确实比男人更好,人主啊,

186她聪慧、持戒,善待婆母,对丈夫忠诚。
Medhāvinī sīlavatī, sassudevā patibbatā.
187“她所生的那个男子,会成为英雄、一方之主;
‘‘Tassā yo jāyati poso, sūro hoti disampati;
188这样贤德妻子的儿子,甚至能治理王国。”
Tādisā subhagiyā putto, rajjampi anusāsatī’’ti.

7. Appamādasuttaṃ
128【舍卫城缘起】。他坐到一边。坐在一边后,憍萨罗王波斯匿对世尊这样说:“尊者,是否有那么一个法,能兼备并保持两种利益——既得现世的利益,也得来世的利益呢?”
Sāvatthinidānaṃ . Ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho rājā pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘atthi nu kho, bhante, eko dhammo yo ubho atthe samadhiggayha tiṭṭhati – diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṃ samparāyikañcā’’ti?
191“大王,确实有一个法,既能把握住此生的利益,也能把握住来世的利益。”
‘‘Atthi kho, mahārāja, eko dhammo yo ubho atthe samadhiggayha tiṭṭhati – diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṃ samparāyikañcā’’ti.
192“尊者,能把握住两种利益——此生的利益和来世的利益——的那一个法,是什么呢?”
‘‘Katamo pana, bhante, eko dhammo, yo ubho atthe samadhiggayha tiṭṭhati – diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṃ samparāyikañcā’’ti?
193“大王,那一个法就是不轻率、不放逸。它既能把握住此生的利益,也能把握住来世的利益。大王,就像所有属于陆地生物的任何足迹,都能归入大象的足迹,大象的足迹因其巨大而被认为是其中之首;同样地,大王,不轻率、不放逸这唯一的法,既能把握住此生的利益,也能把握住来世的利益。”世尊说了这些……(经文省略)……
‘‘Appamādo kho, mahārāja, eko dhammo, yo ubho atthe samadhiggayha tiṭṭhati – diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṃ samparāyikañcāti. Seyyathāpi, mahārāja, yāni kānici jaṅgalānaṃ pāṇānaṃ padajātāni, sabbāni tāni hatthipade samodhānaṃ gacchanti, hatthipadaṃ tesaṃ aggamakkhāyati – yadidaṃ mahantattena; evameva kho, mahārāja, appamādo eko dhammo, yo ubho atthe samadhiggayha tiṭṭhati – diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṃ samparāyikañcā’’ti. 196“智者们在各种有功德的行为中,都称赞不放逸;

197不放逸的智者,能获得两种利益。
Appamatto ubho atthe, adhiggaṇhāti paṇḍito.
198现世可见的利益,以及来世的利益。
Diṭṭhe dhamme ca yo attho, yo cattho samparāyiko;
199因为证得利益,坚定者被称为智者。”

2008. 善友经
8. Kalyāṇamittasuttaṃ
129在舍卫城。那时,国憍萨罗王波斯匿坐在一旁,对世尊这样说:
“大德,应该在哪里做布施呢?”
“大王,心里对哪里生起净信,就在哪里做布施。”
“可是,大德,布施给哪里,会有大果报呢?”
“大王,’应该在哪里布施’和’布施给哪里会有大果报’,这是两件不同的事。大王,布施给有戒的人,会有大果报,布施给无戒的人,就不是这样。
那么,大王,关于这个,我来问你。你怎么认为,就怎么回答。
大王,你想想看:假设你这里战事来临,正排开阵仗要交战了。这时,走过来一个刹帝利青年——他没有受过训练,没有练过武艺,没有作战经验,没有行伍历练,而且胆小、发抖、惊怕、是个逃兵。你会用这样的人吗?你需要这样的人吗?”
“大德,我不会用这样的人,我也不需要这样的人。”
“再假设,走过来一个婆罗门青年——他没有受过训练……(中略)……走过来一个吠舍青年——他没有受过训练……(中略)……走过来一个首陀罗青年——他没有受过训练……我也不需要这样的人。”
Sāvatthinidānaṃ. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho rājā pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘kattha nu kho, bhante, dānaṃ dātabba’’nti? ‘‘Yattha kho, mahārāja, cittaṃ pasīdatī’’ti. ‘‘Kattha pana, bhante, dinnaṃ mahapphala’’nti? ‘‘Aññaṃ kho etaṃ, mahārāja, kattha dānaṃ dātabbaṃ, aññaṃ panetaṃ kattha dinnaṃ mahapphalanti? Sīlavato kho, mahārāja, dinnaṃ mahapphalaṃ, no tathā dussīle. Tena hi, mahārāja, taññevettha paṭipucchissāmi. Yathā, te khameyya, tathā naṃ byākareyyāsi. Taṃ kiṃ maññasi, mahārāja, idha tyassa yuddhaṃ paccupaṭṭhitaṃ saṅgāmo samupabyūḷho . Atha āgaccheyya khattiyakumāro asikkhito akatahattho akatayoggo akatūpāsano bhīru chambhī utrāsī palāyī. Bhareyyāsi taṃ purisaṃ, attho ca te tādisena purisenā’’ti? ‘‘Nāhaṃ, bhante, bhareyyaṃ taṃ purisaṃ, na ca me attho tādisena purisenā’’ti. ‘‘Atha āgaccheyya brāhmaṇakumāro asikkhito…pe… atha āgaccheyya vessakumāro asikkhito…pe… atha āgaccheyya suddakumāro asikkhito…pe… na ca me attho tādisena purisenā’’ti.
202“正是这样,大王,正是这样,大王!大王,我所说的法是善说的。而这法是属于有善友、善同伴、善相交的人,不属于有恶友、恶同伴、恶相交的人。
‘‘Evametaṃ, mahārāja, evametaṃ, mahārāja! Svākkhāto , mahārāja, mayā dhammo. So ca kho kalyāṇamittassa kalyāṇasahāyassa kalyāṇasampavaṅkassa, no pāpamittassa no pāpasahāyassa no pāpasampavaṅkassāti.
203“大王,有一次,我住在释迦族中,一个名叫那嘎拉迦的释迦族小镇。那时,大王,阿难陀比丘来到我这里,向我礼敬后,坐在一旁。大王,阿难陀比丘坐在一旁后,对我说:‘大德,这梵行生活的一半,就是这善友、善同伴、善相交。’”
‘‘Ekamidāhaṃ, mahārāja, samayaṃ sakkesu viharāmi nagarakaṃ nāma sakyānaṃ nigamo. Atha kho, mahārāja, ānando bhikkhu yenāhaṃ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā maṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho, mahārāja, ānando bhikkhu maṃ etadavoca – ‘upaḍḍhamidaṃ, bhante, brahmacariyassa – yadidaṃ kalyāṇamittatā kalyāṇasahāyatā kalyāṇasampavaṅkatā’’’ti.
204这样说后,大王,我对阿难比丘这么说:‘阿难,不要这样,阿难,不要这样!阿难,这整个梵行,就是善友、善同伴、善亲近。阿难,对于一位善友、善同伴、善亲近的比丘,这是可以预期的:他将修习圣八支道,他将多修圣八支道。’
‘‘Evaṃ vuttāhaṃ, mahārāja, ānandaṃ bhikkhuṃ etadavocaṃ – ‘mā hevaṃ, ānanda, mā hevaṃ, ānanda! Sakalameva hidaṃ, ānanda, brahmacariyaṃ – yadidaṃ kalyāṇamittatā kalyāṇasahāyatā kalyāṇasampavaṅkatā. Kalyāṇamittassetaṃ, ānanda, bhikkhuno pāṭikaṅkhaṃ kalyāṇasahāyassa kalyāṇasampavaṅkassa ariyaṃ aṭṭhaṅgikaṃ maggaṃ bhāvessati ariyaṃ aṭṭhaṅgikaṃ maggaṃ bahulīkarissati’’’.
205那么,阿难,一位善友、善同伴、善亲近的比丘,如何修习圣八支道,如何多修圣八支道呢?阿难,这里,一位比丘修习正见,依于远离、依于离欲、依于灭、转向舍离;修习正思维……修习正语……修习正业……修习正命……修习正精进……修习正念……修习正定,依于远离、依于离欲、依于灭、转向舍离。阿难,就是这样,一位善友、善同伴、善亲近的比丘修习圣八支道,多修圣八支道。阿难,应从这个角度来理解:整个梵行就是善友、善同伴、善亲近。
‘‘Kathañca, ānanda, bhikkhu kalyāṇamitto kalyāṇasahāyo kalyāṇasampavaṅko ariyaṃ aṭṭhaṅgikaṃ maggaṃ bhāveti, ariyaṃ aṭṭhaṅgikaṃ maggaṃ bahulīkaroti? Idhānanda, bhikkhu sammādiṭṭhiṃ bhāveti vivekanissitaṃ virāganissitaṃ nirodhanissitaṃ vossaggapariṇāmiṃ, sammāsaṅkappaṃ bhāveti…pe… sammāvācaṃ bhāveti…pe… sammākammantaṃ bhāveti…pe… sammāājīvaṃ bhāveti…pe… sammāvāyāmaṃ bhāveti…pe… sammāsatiṃ bhāveti…pe… sammāsamādhiṃ bhāveti vivekanissitaṃ virāganissitaṃ nirodhanissitaṃ vossaggapariṇāmiṃ. Evaṃ kho, ānanda, bhikkhu kalyāṇamitto kalyāṇasahāyo kalyāṇasampavaṅko ariyaṃ aṭṭhaṅgikaṃ maggaṃ bhāveti, ariyaṃ aṭṭhaṅgikaṃ maggaṃ bahulīkaroti. Tadamināpetaṃ, ānanda, pariyāyena veditabbaṃ yathā sakalamevidaṃ brahmacariyaṃ – yadidaṃ kalyāṇamittatā kalyāṇasahāyatā kalyāṇasampavaṅkatā’’ti.
206阿难,正是依靠我为善友,有生法的众生得以从生解脱;有老法的众生得以从老解脱;有病法的众生得以从病解脱;有死法的众生得以从死解脱;有忧、悲、苦、愁、恼法的众生得以从忧、悲、苦、愁、恼解脱。阿难,应从这个角度来理解:整个梵行就是善友、善同伴、善亲近。
‘‘Mamañhi, ānanda, kalyāṇamittaṃ āgamma jātidhammā sattā jātiyā parimuccanti, jarādhammā sattā jarāya parimuccanti, byādhidhammā sattā byādhito parimuccanti, maraṇadhammā sattā maraṇena parimuccanti, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsadhammā sattā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsehi parimuccanti. Iminā kho etaṃ, ānanda, pariyāyena veditabbaṃ yathā sakalamevidaṃ brahmacariyaṃ – yadidaṃ kalyāṇamittatā kalyāṇasahāyatā kalyāṇasampavaṅkatā’’ti.
207因此,大王,你应当这样学:‘我要成为善友、善同伴、善亲近。’大王,你应当这样学。
‘‘Tasmātiha te, mahārāja, evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ – ‘kalyāṇamitto bhavissāmi kalyāṇasahāyo kalyāṇasampavaṅko’ti. Evañhi te , mahārāja, sikkhitabbaṃ.
208大王,当你成为善友、善同伴、善亲近的时候,有一个法应当依止而住:在善法上的不放逸。
‘‘Kalyāṇamittassa te, mahārāja, kalyāṇasahāyassa kalyāṇasampavaṅkassa ayaṃ eko dhammo upanissāya vihātabbo – appamādo kusalesu dhammesu.
209「大王,当你自己安住于不放逸、依止于不放逸时,那些跟随你的刹帝利们也会这样想:『国王安住于不放逸,依止于不放逸。来吧,我们也应当安住于不放逸,依止于不放逸。』」
‘‘Appamattassa te, mahārāja, viharato appamādaṃ upanissāya, khattiyānampi anuyantānaṃ evaṃ bhavissati – ‘rājā kho appamatto viharati appamādaṃ upanissāya. Handa, mayampi appamattā viharāma, appamādaṃ upanissāyā’’’ti.
210「大王,当你自己安住于不放逸、依止于不放逸时,你的军队也会这样想:『国王安住于不放逸,依止于不放逸。来吧,我们也应当安住于不放逸,依止于不放逸。』」
‘‘Appamattassa te, mahārāja, viharato appamādaṃ upanissāya, balakāyassapi evaṃ bhavissati – ‘rājā kho appamatto viharati appamādaṃ upanissāya. Handa, mayampi appamattā viharāma, appamādaṃ upanissāyā’’’ti.
211「大王,当你自己安住于不放逸、依止于不放逸时,那些城镇与乡村的民众也会这样想:『国王安住于不放逸,依止于不放逸。来吧,我们也应当安住于不放逸,依止于不放逸。』」
‘‘Appamattassa te, mahārāja, viharato appamādaṃ upanissāya, negamajānapadassapi evaṃ bhavissati – ‘rājā kho appamatto viharati, appamādaṃ upanissāya. Handa, mayampi appamattā viharāma, appamādaṃ upanissāyā’’’ti?
212「大王,当你自己安住于不放逸、依止于不放逸时,你自己会得到守护、受到保护;你的后宫也会得到守护、受到保护;你的国库与储藏室也会得到守护、受到保护。」这是世尊所说……
‘‘Appamattassa te, mahārāja, viharato appamādaṃ upanissāya, attāpi gutto rakkhito bhavissati – itthāgārampi guttaṃ rakkhitaṃ bhavissati, kosakoṭṭhāgārampi guttaṃ rakkhitaṃ bhavissatī’’ti. Idamavoca…pe…
213大王,当你安住于不放逸,依止于不放逸的时候,那些后宫眷属、随从们也会这样想:‘国王安住于不放逸,依止不放逸。来吧,我们也要安住于不放逸,依止不放逸。’
‘‘Appamattassa te, mahārāja, viharato appamādaṃ upanissāya, itthāgārassa anuyantassa evaṃ bhavissati – ‘rājā kho appamatto viharati, appamādaṃ upanissāya. Handa, mayampi appamattā viharāma, appamādaṃ upanissāyā’’’ti.
214「对于渴望获得种种广大财富的人,
‘‘Bhoge patthayamānena, uḷāre aparāpare;
215智者在造作福德善行时,赞叹不放逸。」
Appamādaṃ pasaṃsanti, puññakiriyāsu paṇḍitā.
216不放逸的智者,能获得两种利益:
‘‘Appamatto ubho atthe, adhiggaṇhāti paṇḍito;
217现世的利益,与来世的利益;
‘‘Diṭṭhe dhamme ca yo attho, yo cattho samparāyiko;
218因通达利益而坚定,这样的人被称为智者。
Atthābhisamayā dhīro, paṇḍitoti pavuccatī’’ti.
2199. 无子第一经
9. Paṭhamaaputtakasuttaṃ
130这件事发生在舍卫城。那时,憍萨罗国王波斯匿来到世尊那里,到了以后,向世尊行礼,然后坐在一边。坐在一边的波斯匿王对世尊这样说:“大德,有多少种法,当它们在一个人内心中生起时,会给他带来不利、痛苦和不安乐呢?”
Sāvatthinidānaṃ. Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho rājā pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘kati nu kho, bhante, purisassa dhammā ajjhattaṃ uppajjamānā uppajjanti ahitāya dukkhāya aphāsuvihārāyā’’ti?
221“尊者,沙瓦提城有一位长者居士去世了。我把那位没有子嗣的富翁的财产运进王宫后过来。尊者,光是黄金就有八十万,更不用说白银了。可是,尊者,那位长者居士生前却是这样的饮食享受——吃碎米饭配酸粥;是这样的衣着享受——穿三片粗麻布缝成的衣服;是这样的车乘享受——乘坐一辆撑着树叶遮阳的破旧小车。”
‘‘Idha, bhante, sāvatthiyaṃ seṭṭhi gahapati kālaṅkato. Tamahaṃ aputtakaṃ sāpateyyaṃ rājantepuraṃ atiharitvā āgacchāmi. Asīti, bhante, satasahassāni hiraññasseva, ko pana vādo rūpiyassa ! Tassa kho pana, bhante, seṭṭhissa gahapatissa evarūpo bhattabhogo ahosi – kaṇājakaṃ bhuñjati bilaṅgadutiyaṃ. Evarūpo vatthabhogo ahosi – sāṇaṃ dhāreti tipakkhavasanaṃ. Evarūpo yānabhogo ahosi – jajjararathakena yāti paṇṇachattakena dhāriyamānenā’’ti.
222“正是这样,大王,正是这样,大王。大王,不善的人获得巨大的财富后,既不让自己过得快乐舒适,也不让父母过得快乐舒适,不让妻子儿女过得快乐舒适,不让奴仆工人过得快乐舒适,不让朋友同事过得快乐舒适,也不在沙门、婆罗门那里建立向上、能生天界、带来快乐果报、导向天界的布施。像这样被不正当地受用的财富,国王会取走,盗贼会取走,大火会烧毁,洪水会冲走,不肖的继承者会取走。大王,这样不正当地受用财富,财富就走向毁灭,而不是被享用。”
‘‘Evametaṃ, mahārāja, evametaṃ, mahārāja! Asappuriso kho, mahārāja, uḷāre bhoge labhitvā nevattānaṃ sukheti pīṇeti, na mātāpitaro sukheti pīṇeti, na puttadāraṃ sukheti pīṇeti, na dāsakammakaraporise sukheti pīṇeti, na mittāmacce sukheti pīṇeti, na samaṇabrāhmaṇesu uddhaggikaṃ dakkhiṇaṃ patiṭṭhāpeti sovaggikaṃ sukhavipākaṃ saggasaṃvattanikaṃ. Tassa te bhoge evaṃ sammā aparibhuñjiyamāne rājāno vā haranti corā vā haranti aggi vā ḍahati udakaṃ vā vahati appiyā vā dāyādā haranti. Evaṃsa te , mahārāja, bhogā sammā aparibhuñjiyamānā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti, no paribhogaṃ.
223大王,好比在一个非人的住处,有一口池塘,池水清澈、清凉、甘美、洁净,有舒适的下水处,令人欢喜。人们不去取水,也不饮用,不沐浴,也不根据需要去使用。大王,这样的话,那水因为没有得到善用,就会白白耗尽,不能发挥它的作用。同样地,大王,恶人在得到大量财富之后,既不用来让自己安乐、满足,也不用它让父母安乐、满足,不让妻子儿女安乐、满足,不让奴婢、工人、仆人安乐、满足,不让朋友、同僚安乐、满足,也不在沙门婆罗门之中建立那种向上提升的、能带来天界、乐果、令生天界的布施。他的那些财富因为没有得到这样的善用,就会被国王拿走,被贼拿走,被火烧毁,被水冲走,或者被不可爱的继承人拿走。大王,这些财富因为不善用,就这样走向耗尽,而不是发挥功用。
‘‘Seyyathāpi, mahārāja, amanussaṭṭhāne pokkharaṇī acchodakā sītodakā sātodakā setodakā supatitthā ramaṇīyā. Taṃ jano neva hareyya na piveyya na nahāyeyya na yathāpaccayaṃ vā kareyya. Evañhi taṃ, mahārāja, udakaṃ sammā aparibhuñjiyamānaṃ parikkhayaṃ gaccheyya , no paribhogaṃ. Tassa te bhoge evaṃ sammā aparibhuñjiyamāne rājāno vā haranti corā vā haranti aggi vā ḍahati udakaṃ vā vahati appiyā vā dāyādā haranti. 224大王,善人在得到大量财富之后,会用来让自己安乐、满足,让父母安乐、满足,让妻子儿女安乐、满足,让奴婢、工人、仆人安乐、满足,让朋友、同僚安乐、满足,并在沙门婆罗门之中建立那种向上提升的、能带来天界、乐果、令生天界的布施。他的那些财富因为得到了这样的善用,国王不会拿走,贼不会拿走,火不能烧毁,水不能冲走,不可爱的继承人也不能拿走。大王,这些财富因为被善用,就这样发挥功用,而不会走向耗尽。

228同样地,败德之人获得了财富,
Evaṃ dhanaṃ kāpuriso labhitvā,
229自己不吃,也不给别人。
Nevattanā bhuñjati no dadāti.
230而智者明白人获得了财富后,
Dhīro ca viññū adhigamma bhoge,
231他享用,也做该做的事;
So bhuñjati kiccakaro ca hoti;
232他这位人中雄牛养活了亲族大众后,
So ñātisaṅghaṃ nisabho bharitvā,
233不受指责,投生天界。

10. Dutiyaaputtakasuttaṃ
131那时,憍萨罗国波斯匿王在大白天来到世尊那里。到了以后,坐在一边。世尊对坐在一边的憍萨罗国波斯匿王这样说:“喂,大王,你大白天从哪里来啊?”
Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo divā divassa yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā ekamantaṃ nisinnaṃ kho rājānaṃ pasenadiṃ kosalaṃ bhagavā etadavoca – ‘‘handa, kuto nu tvaṃ, mahārāja, āgacchasi divā divassā’’ti?
236“大德,舍卫城有个做财主的大户人死了。他没有子嗣,我把他留下的财产运到王宫后才过来的。大德,光是金子就有百千之数,更不用说银子了。大德,可这位财主大户人过日子却是这样:吃的,是带着酸粥的碎米饭;穿的,是三片粗麻布缝成的衣服;出门,坐的是辆破破烂烂的老车,头上遮着片树叶当伞。”
‘‘Idha, bhante, sāvatthiyaṃ seṭṭhi gahapati kālaṅkato. Tamahaṃ aputtakaṃ sāpateyyaṃ rājantepuraṃ atiharitvā āgacchāmi. Sataṃ, bhante, satasahassāni hiraññasseva, ko pana vādo rūpiyassa! Tassa kho pana, bhante, seṭṭhissa gahapatissa evarūpo bhattabhogo ahosi – kaṇājakaṃ bhuñjati bilaṅgadutiyaṃ. Evarūpo vatthabhogo ahosi – sāṇaṃ dhāreti tipakkhavasanaṃ . Evarūpo yānabhogo ahosi – jajjararathakena yāti paṇṇachattakena dhāriyamānenā’’ti.
237“是这样,大王,是这样,大王。大王,过去这位财主大户人曾向一位名叫达伽罗尸弃的独觉佛供斋,说完 ‘给沙门食物’,就起身走了。供完之后,他又后悔起来,心想:‘这顿饭,还不如让仆人、佣人吃呢。’ 而且,为了财产,他还把自己亲兄弟的独生子给害死了。
‘‘Evametaṃ, mahārāja, evametaṃ, mahārāja! Bhūtapubbaṃ so, mahārāja, seṭṭhi gahapati taggarasikhiṃ nāma paccekasambuddhaṃ piṇḍapātena paṭipādesi. ‘Detha samaṇassa piṇḍa’nti vatvā uṭṭhāyāsanā pakkāmi. Datvā ca pana pacchā vippaṭisārī ahosi – ‘varametaṃ piṇḍapātaṃ dāsā vā kammakarā vā bhuñjeyyu’nti. Bhātu ca pana ekaputtakaṃ sāpateyyassa kāraṇā jīvitā voropesi.
238“大王,那位财主大户人因供养独觉佛达伽罗尸弃的业报,七次投生善趣、天界;又由于那个业报剩余的势力,就在这舍卫城做了七次财主。大王,但他供斋后又心生后悔,心想‘这顿饭,还不如让仆人、佣人吃呢’——因为这个业的果报,他的心对不上等饮食不感兴趣,对不上等衣服不感兴趣,对不上等车乘不感兴趣,对享受五种妙欲不感兴趣。大王,而他为了财产把亲兄弟的独生子害死——因为这个业的果报,他在地狱中受煎烤了不知多少年、多少百年、多少千年、多少百千年。又由于那个业报剩余的势力,这第七次,他又把这没有子嗣的财产送进了国王的国库。大王,这位财主大户人旧的福报已经耗尽了,新的福报他又没积。大王,今天,这位财主大户人正在大叫唤地狱里受煎烤呢。” “是这样,大德,这位财主大户人投生到大叫唤地狱里了。” “正是这样,大王,这位财主大户人投生到了大叫唤地狱里。” 这是……(世尊)所说。(曲终)

Dāsā kammakarā pessā, ye cassa anujīvino.

242他经由身体、言语、心意所造作的一切,

Sāvatthinidānaṃ . Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Atha kho aññataro puriso yena rājā pasenadi kosalo tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā rañño pasenadissa kosalassa upakaṇṇake ārocesi – ‘‘mallikā, deva, devī dhītaraṃ vijātā’’ti. 257'大王,什么样的人是从黑暗走向黑暗的人呢?大王,这里有一种人,出生于低贱的家庭——旃陀罗家、竹匠家、猎人家、车匠家或清道夫家,贫穷、饮食匮乏、生计艰难,在那里勉强得到衣食。他相貌丑陋、身材矮小、形容枯槁、多病,或瞎眼,或手曲,或跛足,或偏瘫,得不到食物、饮料、衣服、车乘、花鬘、香料、涂油、床座、住处和灯火。他以身行恶,以语行恶,以意行恶。他这样以身、语、意行恶之后,在身体破裂死亡之后,便往生于苦界、恶趣、堕处、地狱。'

Idha, mahārāja, ekacco puggalo nīce kule paccājāto hoti, caṇḍālakule vā venakule vā nesādakule vā rathakārakule vā pukkusakule vā dalidde appannapānabhojane kasiravuttike , yattha kasirena ghāsacchādo labbhati. So ca hoti dubbaṇṇo duddasiko okoṭimako bavhābādho kāṇo vā kuṇī vā khañjo vā pakkhahato vā, na lābhī annassa pānassa vatthassa yānassa mālāgandhavilepanassa seyyāvasathapadīpeyyassa. 259「大王,如何人是从暗至光呢?大王,于此,某人出生于低贱家族,或旃陀罗家族,或竹工家族,或猎师家族,或车匠家族,或除秽者家族,贫穷、少食物饮料,艰难维生,于彼处以艰难获得衣食。而且他丑陋、难看、畸形、多病,独眼或手畸或跛足或半身不遂,不获得食物、饮料、衣服、车乘、花鬘香涂料、床座住所灯烛。他以身行善行,以语行善行,以意行善行。他以身行善行,以语行善行,以意行善行后,身坏命终后往生善趣、天界。

262大王,怎样是从光明走向黑暗的人?大王,这里有一种人,出生在高贵的家族——刹帝利豪富家、婆罗门豪富家或者居士豪富家,富有,有大钱、大财富、多金银、多财物、多资产、多谷物。而且他长得英俊、好看、令人悦目,具有最上等的容貌端庄,得到食物、饮料、衣物、车乘、花鬘、香、涂油、床铺、住处和灯明。他做身恶行、做语恶行、做意恶行。他做了身恶行、语恶行、意恶行之后,身体解散,死后投生到苦界、恶趣、堕处、地狱。

263「大王,人如何是光辉至光辉到彼岸者呢?大王,于此,某人出生在高贵的家族,或刹帝利大财主家族,或婆罗门大财主家族,或家主大财主家族,富裕、大富、财多、拥有众多黄金白银、拥有众多财产资具、拥有众多钱财谷物。而且他是可爱的、好看的、悦意的、具足最胜的美貌光彩,是食物、饮料、衣服、车乘、华鬘香膏涂料、卧具住所灯明的获得者。他以身行善行,以语行善行,以意行善行。他以身行善行后,以语行善行后,以意行善行后,身坏命终后往生于善趣、天界。

Idha, mahārāja, ekacco puggalo ucce kule paccājāto hoti, khattiyamahāsālakule vā brāhmaṇamahāsālakule vā gahapatimahāsālakule vā, aḍḍhe mahaddhane mahābhoge pahūtajātarūparajate pahūtavittūpakaraṇe pahūtadhanadhaññe. So ca hoti abhirūpo dassanīyo pāsādiko, paramāya vaṇṇapokkharatāya samannāgato , lābhī annassa pānassa vatthassa yānassa mālāgandhavilepanassa seyyāvasathapadīpeyyassa. So kāyena sucaritaṃ carati, vācāya sucaritaṃ carati, manasā sucaritaṃ carati. 264大王,就好比有人从一张坐榻换到另一张坐榻,从一匹马背换到另一匹马背,从一头象的肩膀换到另一头象的肩膀,从一座殿堂换到另一座殿堂。大王,我说这个人就正如这个譬喻一样。大王,这样的人就是从光明走向光明。大王,这四种人真实地存在于此世间。

265大王,一个贫穷的人,没有信心,而且悭吝,

266小气、心怀恶念、持有邪见、毫无敬意,
Kadariyo pāpasaṅkappo, micchādiṭṭhi anādaro.
267无论是对沙门、婆罗门,还是对其他乞食者,
‘‘Samaṇe brāhmaṇe vāpi, aññe vāpi vanibbake;
268辱骂、诽谤,不信且暴躁,
Akkosati paribhāsati, natthiko hoti rosako.
269阻止布施的人,不给乞求者食物,
‘‘Dadamānaṃ nivāreti, yācamānāna bhojanaṃ;
270大王,像那样的人,在临终的时候,
Tādiso puriso rāja, mīyamāno janādhipa;
271会堕入恐怖的地狱,以层层黑暗为归宿。

272大王,一个贫穷的人,如果他有信心、不吝啬,
‘‘Daliddo puriso rāja, saddho hoti amaccharī;
273这个人怀着最善的意向,内心不散乱,乐于布施。
Dadāti seṭṭhasaṅkappo, abyaggamanaso naro.
274他对沙门、婆罗门,或者对其他任何乞食者,
‘‘Samaṇe brāhmaṇe vāpi, aññe vāpi vanibbake;
275他都起身迎接、恭敬问候,并学习如法而行。
Uṭṭhāya abhivādeti, samacariyāya sikkhati.
276对于给乞讨者食物的布施,他不加阻止;
‘‘Dadamānaṃ na vāreti , yācamānāna bhojanaṃ;
277这样的人,大王啊,当他命终时,人主啊,
Tādiso puriso rāja, mīyamāno janādhipa;
278他将前往天界,从黑暗走向光明的归处。
Upeti tidivaṃ ṭhānaṃ, tamojotiparāyano.
279大王,如果一个人家财丰厚,却无信、吝啬——
‘‘Aḍḍho ce puriso rāja, assaddho hoti maccharī;
280悭贪、心念邪恶、持邪见、不知恭敬,
Kadariyo pāpasaṅkappo, micchādiṭṭhi anādaro.
281对沙门、婆罗门,或是其他的乞食者,
‘‘Samaṇe brāhmaṇe vāpi, aññe vāpi vanibbake;
282辱骂、毁谤,是一个否定因果的人,充满恼害,
Akkosati paribhāsati, natthiko hoti rosako.
283他阻止别人布施,阻挡给予乞讨者的食物,
‘‘Dadamānaṃ nivāreti, yācamānāna bhojanaṃ;
284这样的人,大王啊,人主啊,在他临终之际,
Tādiso puriso rāja, mīyamāno janādhipa;
285堕入恐怖的地狱,被焚烧、无有归依。
Upeti nirayaṃ ghoraṃ, jotitamaparāyano.
286如果一个人富有,大王啊,他有信心且不吝啬,
‘‘Aḍḍho ce puriso rāja, saddho hoti amaccharī;
287志向最上、内心不散乱的善士,乐于布施。
Dadāti seṭṭhasaṅkappo, abyaggamanaso naro.
288无论是对沙门、婆罗门,还是对其他乞讨者——
‘‘Samaṇe brāhmaṇe vāpi, aññe vāpi vanibbake;
289他起身礼敬,修习正直平等的品行。
Uṭṭhāya abhivādeti, samacariyāya sikkhati.
290他不去阻拦施者将食物给与乞求的人。
‘‘Dadamānaṃ na vāreti, yācamānāna bhojanaṃ;
291大王,这样的一个人,在临死之时,人主啊,
Tādiso puriso rāja, mīyamāno janādhipa;
292会前往三十三天界,以光辉为归趣。

2. Ayyikāsuttaṃ
133此事发生在沙瓦提城。世尊对坐在一边的国憍萨罗王波斯匿这样说:'大王,你在大白天从哪里来呢?'波斯匿王回答说:'尊者,那些刹帝利灌顶王,沉醉于权势的骄慢,被对欲乐的贪求所缠缚,获得了国土的稳固,征服并居住于广大的疆域,他们有着种种国王应办的事务。我刚才就是忙于处理这些事务。'
Sāvatthinidānaṃ . Ekamantaṃ nisinnaṃ kho rājānaṃ pasenadiṃ kosalaṃ bhagavā etadavoca – ‘‘handa, kuto nu tvaṃ, mahārāja, āgacchasi divā divassā’’ti? ‘‘Yāni tāni, bhante, raññaṃ khattiyānaṃ muddhāvasittānaṃ issariyamadamattānaṃ kāmagedhapariyuṭṭhitānaṃ janapadatthāvariyappattānaṃ mahantaṃ pathavimaṇḍalaṃ abhivijiya ajjhāvasantānaṃ rājakaraṇīyāni bhavanti, tesu khvāhaṃ, etarahi ussukkamāpanno’’ti.
295大德,我的祖母去世了。她老了,年迈,极为高龄,生命已经走到尽头,年纪到了一百二十岁。可是大德,祖母对我来说是那么可爱、那么让我欢喜。大德,如果能用象宝换来‘别让我的祖母去世’,我愿意献出象宝——只为‘别让我的祖母去世’。大德,如果能用马宝换来‘别让我的祖母去世’,我也愿意献出马宝——只为‘别让我的祖母去世’。大德,如果能用最好的村庄换来‘别让我的祖母去世’,我愿意给出最好的村庄——只为‘别让我的祖母去世’。大德,如果能用一片国土来换取‘别让我的祖母去世’,我也会给出那片国土——只为‘别让我的祖母去世’。” “大王,一切众生都有死法,都以死为终点,都超不过死亡。” “太神奇了,大德!太不可思议了,大德!世尊这话说得真是太好了——一切众生都有死法,都以死为终点,都超不过死亡。”
‘‘Ayyikā me, bhante, kālaṅkatā jiṇṇā vuḍḍhā mahallikā addhagatā vayoanuppattā vīsavassasatikā jātiyā. Ayyikā kho pana me, bhante, piyā hoti manāpā. Hatthiratanena cepāhaṃ, bhante, labheyyaṃ ‘mā me ayyikā kālamakāsī’ti, hatthiratanampāhaṃ dadeyyaṃ – ‘mā me ayyikā kālamakāsī’ti. Assaratanena cepāhaṃ, bhante, labheyyaṃ ‘mā me ayyikā kālamakāsī’ti, assaratanampāhaṃ dadeyyaṃ – ‘mā me ayyikā kālamakāsī’ti. Gāmavarena cepāhaṃ bhante, labheyyaṃ ‘mā me ayyikā kālamakāsī’ti, gāmavarampāhaṃ dadeyyaṃ – ‘mā me ayyikā kālamakāsī’ti. Janapadapadesena cepāhaṃ, bhante, labheyyaṃ ‘mā me ayyikā kālamakāsī’ti, janapadapadesampāhaṃ dadeyyaṃ – ‘mā me ayyikā kālamakāsī’ti. ‘Sabbe sattā, mahārāja, maraṇadhammā maraṇapariyosānā maraṇaṃ anatītā’ti. ‘Acchariyaṃ, bhante, abbhutaṃ, bhante! Yāvasubhāsitamidaṃ, bhante, bhagavatā – sabbe sattā maraṇadhammā maraṇapariyosānā maraṇaṃ anatītā’’’ti.
296“正是如此,大王,正是如此,大王!一切众生都有死法,都以死为终点,都超不过死亡。大王,就像一切陶师所造的器皿,不论是没有烧过的还是已经烧过的,它们都有破碎的性质,都以破碎为终点,都超不过破碎。同样地,大王,一切众生都有死法,都以死为终点,都超不过死亡。” 世尊说了这番话……
‘‘Evametaṃ, mahārāja, evametaṃ, mahārāja! Sabbe sattā maraṇadhammā maraṇapariyosānā maraṇaṃ anatītā. Seyyathāpi, mahārāja, yāni kānici kumbhakārabhājanāni āmakāni ceva pakkāni ca sabbāni tāni bhedanadhammāni bhedanapariyosānāni bhedanaṃ anatītāni; evameva kho, mahārāja, sabbe sattā maraṇadhammā maraṇapariyosānā maraṇaṃ anatītā’’ti. 298他们将随各自所造的业而去,承受福与恶的果报;

299造恶业者堕入地狱,行善业者投生善趣。
Nirayaṃ pāpakammantā, puññakammā ca suggatiṃ.
300因此,应行善,为来世积聚资粮;
‘‘Tasmā kareyya kalyāṇaṃ, nicayaṃ samparāyikaṃ;
301福德是众生在彼世的依怙。
Puññāni paralokasmiṃ, patiṭṭhā honti pāṇina’’nti.

3. Lokasuttaṃ
134在舍卫城。那时,国憍萨罗王波斯匿在一旁坐下,对世尊这样说:
“大德,我坐在裁判所里,看见那些出身刹帝利大家、婆罗门大家、居士大家的,那些有钱、大财、大富、多金多银、多财物资具、多钱财谷物的人,为了欲,以欲为因,以欲为理由,明明知道却故意说妄语。大德,那时我这样想:‘对我来说,裁判所的事已经够了,现在就让贤面在裁判所里显现吧。’”
Sāvatthinidānaṃ . Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho rājā pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘idhāhaṃ, bhante, aḍḍakaraṇe nisinno passāmi khattiyamahāsālepi brāhmaṇamahāsālepi gahapatimahāsālepi aḍḍhe mahaddhane mahābhoge pahūtajātarūparajate pahūtavittūpakaraṇe pahūtadhanadhaññe kāmahetu kāmanidānaṃ kāmādhikaraṇaṃ sampajānamusā bhāsante. Tassa mayhaṃ, bhante, etadahosi – ‘alaṃ dāni me aḍḍakaraṇena, bhadramukho dāni aḍḍakaraṇena paññāyissatī’’’ti.
304贪、嗔以及痴,从自身生起,会伤害怀有恶心的人,
‘‘Lobho doso ca moho ca, purisaṃ pāpacetasaṃ;
305如同果实反害那结它的竹子和芦苇。
Hiṃsanti attasambhūtā, tacasāraṃva samphala’’nti.

4. Issattasuttaṃ
135舍卫城缘起。那时,憍萨罗国王波斯匿坐在一边,对世尊这样说:“大德!当我独自静处时,心中生起这样的思惟:‘谁是自己被守护的?谁是自己未被守护的?’大德!我这样想:‘那些以身行恶、以口行恶、以意行恶的人,他们自己是未被守护的。即使有象军保护他们,有马军保护他们,有车军保护他们,有步军保护他们,他们自己仍然是未被守护的。这是什么原因呢?因为这种守护是外在的,不是内在的;所以他们自己是未被守护的。而那些以身行善、以口行善、以意行善的人,他们自己是被守护的。即使没有象军保护他们,没有马军保护他们,没有车军保护他们,没有步军保护他们,他们自己仍然是被守护的。这是什么原因呢?因为这种守护是内在的,不是外在的;所以他们自己是被守护的。’”

Tassa mayhaṃ, bhante, etadahosi – ‘ye kho keci kāyena duccaritaṃ caranti, vācāya duccaritaṃ caranti, manasā duccaritaṃ caranti; tesaṃ arakkhito attā. Kiñcāpi te hatthikāyo vā rakkheyya, assakāyo vā rakkheyya, rathakāyo vā rakkheyya, pattikāyo vā rakkheyya; atha kho tesaṃ arakkhito attā. Taṃ kissa hetu? Bāhirā hesā rakkhā, nesā rakkhā ajjhattikā; tasmā tesaṃ arakkhito attā. Ye ca kho keci kāyena sucaritaṃ caranti, vācāya sucaritaṃ caranti, manasā sucaritaṃ caranti; tesaṃ rakkhito attā. Kiñcāpi te neva hatthikāyo rakkheyya, na assakāyo rakkheyya, na rathakāyo rakkheyya , na pattikāyo rakkheyya; atha kho tesaṃ rakkhito attā. Taṃ kissa hetu? Ajjhattikā hesā rakkhā, nesā rakkhā bāhirā; tasmā tesaṃ rakkhito attā’’’ti.
308“大王,你怎么认为呢?假设你这里战事来临,正排开阵仗要交战了。这时,走过来一个刹帝利青年——他训练有素,武艺纯熟,经验丰富,久经阵仗,不胆小、不发抖、不惊怕、不逃跑。你会用这样的人吗?你需要这样的人吗?”
“大德,我会用这样的人,我需要这样的人。”
“再假设,走过来一个婆罗门青年……(中略)……走过来一个吠舍青年……(中略)……走过来一个首陀罗青年——他训练有素,武艺纯熟,经验丰富,久经阵仗,不胆小、不发抖、不惊怕、不逃跑。你会用这样的人吗?你需要这样的人吗?”
“大德,我会用这样的人,我需要这样的人。”
‘‘Taṃ kiṃ maññasi, mahārāja, idha tyassa yuddhaṃ paccupaṭṭhitaṃ saṅgāmo samupabyūḷho. Atha āgaccheyya khattiyakumāro susikkhito katahattho katayoggo katūpāsano abhīru acchambhī anutrāsī apalāyī. Bhareyyāsi taṃ purisaṃ, attho ca te tādisena purisenā’’ti? ‘‘Bhareyyāhaṃ, bhante , taṃ purisaṃ, attho ca me tādisena purisenā’’ti. ‘‘Atha āgaccheyya brāhmaṇakumāro…pe… atha āgaccheyya vessakumāro…pe… atha āgaccheyya suddakumāro susikkhito katahattho katayoggo katūpāsano abhīru acchambhī anutrāsī apalāyī. Bhareyyāsi taṃ purisaṃ, attho ca te tādisena purisenā’’ti? ‘‘Bhareyyāhaṃ, bhante, taṃ purisaṃ, attho ca me tādisena purisenā’’ti.
309大王,正是这样,无论从哪个家族从在家出家的人,如果他已舍离五支、具备五支,对他的布施就有大果报。哪五支被舍离?舍离了欲贪,舍离了瞋恚,舍离了昏沉睡眠,舍离了掉举恶作,舍离了疑——这五支已被舍离。他具备了哪五支?他具备了无学的戒蕴,具备了无学的定蕴,具备了无学的慧蕴,具备了无学的解脱蕴,具备了无学的解脱知见蕴——他具备了这五支。像这样,对舍离五支、具备五支者的布施,就有大果报。”世尊这样说……乃至……导师——
‘‘Evameva kho, mahārāja, yasmā kasmā cepi kulā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajito hoti, so ca hoti pañcaṅgavippahīno pañcaṅgasamannāgato, tasmiṃ dinnaṃ mahapphalaṃ hoti. Katamāni pañcaṅgāni pahīnāni honti? Kāmacchando pahīno hoti, byāpādo pahīno hoti, thinamiddhaṃ pahīnaṃ hoti, uddhaccakukkuccaṃ pahīnaṃ hoti, vicikicchā pahīnā hoti. Imāni pañcaṅgāni pahīnāni honti. Katamehi pañcahaṅgehi samannāgato hoti? Asekkhena sīlakkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena samādhikkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena paññākkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena vimuttikkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena vimuttiñāṇadassanakkhandhena samannāgato hoti. Imehi pañcahaṅgehi samannāgato hoti. Iti pañcaṅgavippahīne pañcaṅgasamannāgate dinnaṃ mahapphala’’nti. Idamavoca bhagavā…pe… satthā –
310哪个年轻人若拥有箭术、力量和英勇,
‘‘Issattaṃ balavīriyañca , yasmiṃ vijjetha māṇave;
311国王就会雇用他去作战,而不是因为出身而用非勇士。
Taṃ yuddhattho bhare rājā, nāsūraṃ jātipaccayā.
312同样地,若有人安住于忍辱与温和,
‘‘Tatheva khantisoraccaṃ, dhammā yasmiṃ patiṭṭhitā;
313即使出身低微,也应礼敬那具圣行、有智慧的人。
Ariyavuttiṃ medhāviṃ, hīnajaccampi pūjaye.
314应在宜人的静修处建造住所,让多闻者居住在那里。
‘‘Kāraye assame ramme, vāsayettha bahussute;
315应在林中开凿水井,在难行险路处架设桥梁。
Papañca vivane kayirā, dugge saṅkamanāni ca.
316食物、饮品和嚼食,以及衣服、坐卧具。
‘‘Annaṃ pānaṃ khādanīyaṃ, vatthasenāsanāni ca;
317应以清净之心,布施给正直之人。
Dadeyya ujubhūtesu, vippasannena cetasā.
318正如那雷鸣电闪、浓云密布的雨云,
‘‘Yathā hi megho thanayaṃ, vijjumālī satakkaku;
319在大地上倾泻雨水,注满高地和洼地。
Thalaṃ ninnañca pūreti, abhivassaṃ vasundharaṃ.
320同样,具足信心的多闻者,用心备好饮食之后,
‘‘Tatheva saddho sutavā, abhisaṅkhacca bhojanaṃ;
321智者以饮食资具,使匮乏者得满足。
Vanibbake tappayati, annapānena paṇḍito.
322他满怀欢喜,普行布施,口中说着:'布施吧,布施吧。'
‘‘Āmodamāno pakireti, detha dethāti bhāsati;
323这就像是他的雷声,如同降雨的天神那样,
Taṃ hissa gajjitaṃ hoti, devasseva pavassato;
324那广大的功德水流,倾泻而下,滋润着施予者。
Sā puññadhārā vipulā, dātāraṃ abhivassatī’’ti.

5. Pabbatūpamasuttaṃ
136舍卫城因缘。那时,憍萨罗王波斯匿坐在一边,世尊这样对他说:“喂,大王,你大中午的从哪里来啊?”
Sāvatthinidānaṃ . Ekamantaṃ nisinnaṃ kho rājānaṃ pasenadiṃ kosalaṃ bhagavā etadavoca – ‘‘handa, kuto nu tvaṃ, mahārāja, āgacchasi divādivassā’’ti?
327'大王,你觉得怎么样?假设有一个可信赖、可靠的人从东方来到你这里。他走到你面前,这样说道:'大王,你知道吗,我从东方来,在那里我看见一座大山,高耸入云,正在朝这里移动,压碎一切生灵。大王,请您做您应做之事吧。'接着,又有第二个人从西方来……又有第三个人从北方来……接着,又有第四个人从南方来,他是可信赖、可靠的。他走到你面前,这样说道:'大王,你知道吗,我从南方来,在那里我看见一座大山,高耸入云,正在朝这里移动,压碎一切生灵。大王,请您做您应做之事吧。'大王,像这样巨大、恐怖的灾难已经降临,人类正面临毁灭,人身是多么难以再得,在这种情况下,您应当做什么呢?'
‘‘Taṃ kiṃ maññasi, mahārāja, idha te puriso āgaccheyya puratthimāya disāya saddhāyiko paccayiko. So taṃ upasaṅkamitvā evaṃ vadeyya – ‘yagghe, mahārāja, jāneyyāsi, ahaṃ āgacchāmi puratthimāya disāya. Tatthaddasaṃ mahantaṃ pabbataṃ abbhasamaṃ sabbe pāṇe nippothento āgacchati. Yaṃ te, mahārāja, karaṇīyaṃ, taṃ karohī’ti. Atha dutiyo puriso āgaccheyya pacchimāya disāya…pe… atha tatiyo puriso āgaccheyya uttarāya disāya…pe… atha catuttho puriso āgaccheyya dakkhiṇāya disāya saddhāyiko paccayiko. So taṃ upasaṅkamitvā evaṃ vadeyya – ‘yagghe mahārāja, jāneyyāsi, ahaṃ āgacchāmi dakkhiṇāya disāya. Tatthaddasaṃ mahantaṃ pabbataṃ abbhasamaṃ sabbe pāṇe nippothento āgacchati. Yaṃ te, mahārāja, karaṇīyaṃ taṃ karohī’ti. Evarūpe te, mahārāja, mahati mahabbhaye samuppanne dāruṇe manussakkhaye dullabhe manussatte kimassa karaṇīya’’nti?
328“尊者,当如此巨大而恐怖的大危险降临,人类遭到毁灭,人身难得之时,该做什么呢?除了法行、正行、善业、福德之外,还有别的什么可做呢?”
‘‘Evarūpe me, bhante, mahati mahabbhaye samuppanne dāruṇe manussakkhaye dullabhe manussatte kimassa karaṇīyaṃ aññatra dhammacariyāya aññatra samacariyāya aññatra kusalakiriyāya aññatra puññakiriyāyā’’ti?
329“大王,我告诉您,大王,我向您说明:大王,衰老与死亡正逼向您。当衰老与死亡逼向您时,大王,该做什么呢?除了法行、正行、善业、福德之外,还有别的什么可做?” “尊者,当衰老与死亡逼向我时,除了法行、正行、善业、福德之外,还有什么可做的呢?尊者,那些灌顶登位的刹帝利王,为权势之骄所醉,为欲贪所缠缚,已得国土安稳,征服并统领广大的疆土,他们有象军之战;尊者,当衰老与死亡逼来时,那些象军之战也无去处、无作用。尊者,那些灌顶登位的刹帝利王……统领广大的疆土,他们有马军之战……有车军之战……有步军之战;尊者,当衰老与死亡逼来时,那些步军之战也无去处、无作用。尊者,我这王宫中还有智谋大臣,能凭计策离间来犯之敌。尊者,当衰老与死亡逼来时,那些计策之战也无去处、无作用。尊者,我这王宫中还蓄有大量金银,藏于地库、悬于空中,我们能用这些财富收买来犯之敌。尊者,当衰老与死亡逼来时,那些财富之战也无去处、无作用。尊者,当衰老与死亡逼向我时,除了法行、正行、善业、福德之外,还有什么可做的呢?”
‘‘Ārocemi kho te, mahārāja, paṭivedemi kho te, mahārāja, adhivattati kho taṃ, mahārāja, jarāmaraṇaṃ. Adhivattamāne ce te, mahārāja, jarāmaraṇe kimassa karaṇīya’’nti? ‘‘Adhivattamāne ca me, bhante, jarāmaraṇe kimassa karaṇīyaṃ aññatra dhammacariyāya samacariyāya kusalakiriyāya puññakiriyāya? Yāni tāni, bhante, raññaṃ khattiyānaṃ muddhāvasittānaṃ issariyamadamattānaṃ kāmagedhapariyuṭṭhitānaṃ janapadatthāvariyappattānaṃ mahantaṃ pathavimaṇḍalaṃ abhivijiya ajjhāvasantānaṃ hatthiyuddhāni bhavanti; tesampi, bhante, hatthiyuddhānaṃ natthi gati natthi visayo adhivattamāne jarāmaraṇe. Yānipi tāni, bhante, raññaṃ khattiyānaṃ muddhāvasittānaṃ…pe… ajjhāvasantānaṃ assayuddhāni bhavanti…pe… rathayuddhāni bhavanti …pe… pattiyuddhāni bhavanti; tesampi , bhante, pattiyuddhānaṃ natthi gati natthi visayo adhivattamāne jarāmaraṇe. Santi kho pana, bhante, imasmiṃ rājakule mantino mahāmattā, ye pahonti āgate paccatthike mantehi bhedayituṃ. Tesampi, bhante, mantayuddhānaṃ natthi gati natthi visayo adhivattamāne jarāmaraṇe. Saṃvijjati kho pana, bhante, imasmiṃ rājakule pahūtaṃ hiraññasuvaṇṇaṃ bhūmigatañceva vehāsaṭṭhañca, yena mayaṃ pahoma āgate paccatthike dhanena upalāpetuṃ. Tesampi, bhante, dhanayuddhānaṃ natthi gati natthi visayo adhivattamāne jarāmaraṇe. Adhivattamāne ca me, bhante, jarāmaraṇe kimassa karaṇīyaṃ aññatra dhammacariyāya samacariyāya kusalakiriyāya puññakiriyāyā’’ti?
330“正是如此,大王,正是如此,大王!当衰老与死亡逼来时,除了法行、正行、善业、福德之外,还有什么可做的呢?”这是世尊所说……导师又说:
‘‘Evametaṃ, mahārāja, evametaṃ, mahārāja! Adhivattamāne jarāmaraṇe kimassa karaṇīyaṃ aññatra dhammacariyāya samacariyāya kusalakiriyāya puññakiriyāyā’’ti? Idamavoca bhagavā…pe… satthā –
331“犹如广大的岩石山,高耸入云,
‘‘Yathāpi selā vipulā, nabhaṃ āhacca pabbatā;
332从四面八方向内包抄,碾压一切,遍及四方。
Samantānupariyāyeyyuṃ, nippothento catuddisā.
333同样,衰老与死亡,逼向一切有情;
‘‘Evaṃ jarā ca maccu ca, adhivattanti pāṇine ;
334刹帝利、婆罗门、吠舍,首陀罗,以及旃陀罗、补羯娑——
Khattiye brāhmaṇe vesse, sudde caṇḍālapukkuse;
335他不回避任何一个,把所有人都碾碎。
Na kiñci parivajjeti, sabbamevābhimaddati.
336在那里,大象没有立足之地,战车没有,步兵也没有;
‘‘Na tattha hatthīnaṃ bhūmi, na rathānaṃ na pattiyā;
337也没法靠谋略战斗取胜,或者靠钱财战胜。
Na cāpi mantayuddhena, sakkā jetuṃ dhanena vā.
338所以,有智慧的人,看到自己的利益,
‘‘Tasmā hi paṇḍito poso, sampassaṃ atthamattano;
339就会坚定地让信心安住在佛、法、僧上。
Buddhe dhamme ca saṅghe ca, dhīro saddhaṃ nivesaye.
340践行于法者,以身、以语、以意——当生即得称扬,身坏后于天界欢悦。
‘‘Yo dhammaṃ cari kāyena, vācāya uda cetasā;
341于此世间人们便称赞他,死后在天界他喜悦。
Idheva naṃ pasaṃsanti, pecca sagge pamodatī’’ti.
