124如是我闻:一时,世尊住在舍卫城祇树给孤独园。在那里,世尊称呼诸比丘:「诸比丘。」「尊者。」那些比丘回答世尊。世尊说此:
Evaṃ me sutaṃ – ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi – ‘‘bhikkhavo’’ti. ‘‘Bhadante’’ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṃ. Bhagavā etadavoca –
5「诸比丘,此轮回无始。被无明所盖、被渴爱所系缚的有情们流转轮回,其前际不可知。诸比丘,譬如有人将此阎浮提的草、木、枝、叶砍下,集于一处,做成四指、四指的木片后放置,说:『这是我的母亲,这是我母亲的母亲』,诸比丘,那人的母亲的母亲们还未穷尽,而此阎浮提的草、木、枝、叶就会耗尽、用完。那是什么原因?诸比丘,此轮回无始。被无明所盖、被渴爱所系缚的有情们流转轮回,其前际不可知。诸比丘,如此长时,你们经历了苦,经历了剧烈,经历了不幸,增长了墓地。诸比丘,仅此就足以对一切诸行厌离,足以离贪,足以解脱。」第一经。
‘‘Anamataggoyaṃ bhikkhave, saṃsāro. Pubbā koṭi na paññāyati avijjānīvaraṇānaṃ sattānaṃ taṇhāsaṃyojanānaṃ sandhāvataṃ saṃsarataṃ. Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, puriso yaṃ imasmiṃ jambudīpe tiṇakaṭṭhasākhāpalāsaṃ taṃ chetvā ekajjhaṃ saṃharitvā caturaṅgulaṃ caturaṅgulaṃ ghaṭikaṃ katvā nikkhipeyya – ‘ayaṃ me mātā, tassā me mātu ayaṃ mātā’ti, apariyādinnāva bhikkhave, tassa purisassa mātumātaro assu, atha imasmiṃ jambudīpe tiṇakaṭṭhasākhāpalāsaṃ parikkhayaṃ pariyādānaṃ gaccheyya. Taṃ kissa hetu? Anamataggoyaṃ, bhikkhave, saṃsāro. Pubbā koṭi na paññāyati avijjānīvaraṇānaṃ sattānaṃ taṇhāsaṃyojanānaṃ sandhāvataṃ saṃsarataṃ. 125在沙瓦提城……(中略)“诸比丘,这个轮回是无始的。被无明覆盖、被渴爱系缚的有情们,流转轮回,其起点是不可知的。诸比丘,好比有人把这片大地做成一个个像枣核般大小的泥丸,并放好说:‘这是我的父亲,这是我父亲的父亲。’诸比丘,那个人的父亲的父亲们,还没有穷尽,而这片大地反而早已耗尽、彻底用完了。那是什么原因呢?诸比丘,因为这个轮回是无始的。被无明覆盖、被渴爱系缚的有情们,流转轮回,其起点是不可知的。诸比丘,你们在这漫长的时间里,经历了如此多的痛苦,经历了如此剧烈的痛苦,经历了如此多的不幸,你们的坟墓确实在不断增加。诸比丘,就这一点来说,已经足以对一切诸行产生厌离,足以离贪,足以解脱。” 第二经。

126在舍卫城居住……世尊说:“比丘们,这轮回是无始的……当你们看到快乐、美好的人时,应该这样确定:‘在这漫长的旅途中,我们也曾体验过类似的事。’为什么呢?因为轮回无始……这就是以对所有诸行厌离,以离贪,以解脱。”第二经。

12“很好,很好,诸比丘。你们能这样理解我所教导的法,很好。诸比丘,正是如此,你们在这漫长的时间里流转,因遭遇不悦意、与悦意分离而悲伤哭泣所流下的泪水,远比四大海的水要多。诸比丘,你们在漫长的时间里,一再经历母亲的死亡。当经历母亲的死亡时,你们因遭遇不悦意、与悦意分离而悲伤哭泣流下的泪水,远比四大海的水要多。诸比丘,你们在漫长的时间里,一再经历父亲的死亡……(中略)经历兄弟的死亡……经历姐妹的死亡……经历儿子的死亡……经历女儿的死亡……经历亲族的不幸……经历财富的损失……经历疾病的不幸。诸比丘,你们在漫长的时间里,一再经历疾病的不幸。当经历疾病的不幸时,你们因遭遇不悦意、与悦意分离而悲伤哭泣流下的泪水,远比四大海的水要多。那是什么原因呢?诸比丘,因为这个轮回是无始的。(中略)诸比丘,就这一点来说,已经足以对一切诸行产生厌离,足以离贪,足以解脱。” 第三经。

127住在舍卫城……「诸比丘,此轮回无始。被无明所盖、被渴爱所系缚的有情们流转轮回,其前际不可知。诸比丘,你们认为如何,哪个较多:你们在此长时流转轮回所饮的母乳,还是四大海中的水?」「尊者,如我们了知世尊所说之法,尊者,这个较多:我们在此长时流转轮回所饮的母乳,而非四大海中的水。」

16「善哉,善哉,诸比丘,诸比丘,你们如此了知我所说之法,善哉。诸比丘,这个较多:你们在此长时流转轮回所饮的母乳,而非四大海中的水。那是什么原因?诸比丘,此轮回无始……足以解脱。」第四经。

128住在舍卫城……园。那时,某位比丘去到世尊那里;到了之后,礼敬世尊,坐在一旁。坐在一旁的那位比丘对世尊如此说:「尊者,劫有多长呢?」「比丘,劫是长的。那不容易计算为:这么多年,或这么多百年,或这么多千年,或这么多十万年。」
Sāvatthiyaṃ viharati…pe… ārāme. Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘kīvadīgho nu kho, bhante, kappo’’ti? ‘‘Dīgho kho, bhikkhu, kappo. So na sukaro saṅkhātuṃ ettakāni vassāni iti vā, ettakāni vassasatāni iti vā, ettakāni vassasahassāni iti vā, ettakāni vassasatasahassāni iti vā’’ti.
20「尊者,但能作譬喻吗?」「能,比丘。」世尊说:「比丘,譬如有一座大石山,长一由旬,宽一由旬,高一由旬,无缺、无孔、一块整体。有人每过一百年,用咖尸咖衣擦拭它一次。比丘,以此方法,那座大石山会更快地耗尽、消失,而劫却不会。比丘,劫是如此长。比丘,如此长的劫,已经轮回了不只一劫,不只一百劫,不只一千劫,不只十万劫。那是什么原因呢?比丘,此轮回无始。被无明所盖、被渴爱所系的众生,流转轮回,前际不可知……比丘,仅此就足以对一切诸行厌离,足以离贪,足以解脱。」第五。
‘‘Sakkā pana, bhante, upamaṃ kātu’’nti? ‘‘Sakkā, bhikkhū’’ti bhagavā avoca. ‘‘Seyyathāpi , bhikkhu, mahāselo pabbato yojanaṃ āyāmena yojanaṃ vitthārena yojanaṃ ubbedhena acchinno asusiro ekagghano. Tamenaṃ puriso vassasatassa vassasatassa accayena kāsikena vatthena sakiṃ sakiṃ parimajjeyya. Khippataraṃ kho so, bhikkhu, mahāselo pabbato iminā upakkamena parikkhayaṃ pariyādānaṃ gaccheyya , na tveva kappo. Evaṃ dīgho, bhikkhu, kappo. Evaṃ dīghānaṃ kho, bhikkhu , kappānaṃ neko kappo saṃsito, nekaṃ kappasataṃ saṃsitaṃ, nekaṃ kappasahassaṃ saṃsitaṃ, nekaṃ kappasatasahassaṃ saṃsitaṃ. Taṃ kissa hetu? Anamataggoyaṃ, bhikkhu, saṃsāro. 129住在舍卫城。那时,某位比丘去到世尊那里……坐在一旁的那位比丘对世尊如此说:「尊者,劫有多长呢?」「比丘,劫是长的。那不容易计算为:这么多年,或……或这么多十万年。」
Sāvatthiyaṃ viharati. Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā…pe… ekamantaṃ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘kīvadīgho, nu kho, bhante, kappo’’ti? ‘‘Dīgho kho, bhikkhu, kappo. So na sukaro saṅkhātuṃ ettakāni vassāni iti vā…pe… ettakāni vassasatasahassāni iti vā’’ti.
24「尊者,但能作譬喻吗?」「能,比丘。」世尊说:「比丘,譬如有一座铁城,长一由旬,宽一由旬,高一由旬,充满芥子,堆积成团。有人每过一百年,从中取出一粒芥子。比丘,以此方法,那大芥子堆会更快地耗尽、消失,而劫却不会。比丘,劫是如此长。比丘,如此长的劫,已经轮回了不只一劫,不只一百劫,不只一千劫,不只十万劫。那是什么原因呢?比丘,此轮回无始……足以解脱。」第六。

Tato puriso vassasatassa vassasatassa accayena ekamekaṃ sāsapaṃ uddhareyya. Khippataraṃ kho so, bhikkhu mahāsāsaparāsi iminā upakkamena parikkhayaṃ pariyādānaṃ gaccheyya, na tveva kappo. Evaṃ dīgho kho, bhikkhu, kappo. Evaṃ dīghānaṃ kho, bhikkhu, kappānaṃ neko kappo saṃsito, nekaṃ kappasataṃ saṃsitaṃ, nekaṃ kappasahassaṃ saṃsitaṃ, nekaṃ kappasatasahassaṃ saṃsitaṃ. Taṃ kissa hetu? 130住在舍卫城。那时,众多比丘去到世尊那里……坐在一旁的那些比丘对世尊如此说:「尊者,有多少劫已经过去、已经逝去呢?」「诸比丘,已经过去、已经逝去的劫是众多的。那些不容易计算为:这么多劫,或这么多百劫,或这么多千劫,或这么多十万劫。」
Sāvatthiyaṃ viharati. Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū yena bhagavā…pe… ekamantaṃ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū bhagavantaṃ etadavocuṃ – ‘‘kīvabahukā nu kho, bhante, kappā abbhatītā atikkantā’’ti? ‘‘Bahukā kho, bhikkhave , kappā abbhatītā atikkantā. Te na sukarā saṅkhātuṃ – ‘ettakā kappā iti vā, ettakāni kappasatāni iti vā, ettakāni kappasahassāni iti vā, ettakāni kappasatasahassāni iti vā’’’ti.
28「尊者,但能作譬喻吗?」「能,诸比丘。」世尊说:「诸比丘,假如这里有四位弟子,寿命百岁,活一百年。他们每天忆念十万劫、十万劫。诸比丘,那些劫还未被他们忆念完,然后那四位弟子,寿命百岁,活一百年,在一百年过去后,就会死亡。诸比丘,已经过去、已经逝去的劫是如此众多。那些不容易计算为:这么多劫,或这么多百劫,或这么多千劫,或这么多十万劫。那是什么原因呢?诸比丘,此轮回无始……足以解脱。」第七。
‘‘Sakkā pana, bhante, upamaṃ kātu’’nti? ‘‘Sakkā, bhikkhave’’ti bhagavā avoca. ‘‘Idhassu, bhikkhave, cattāro sāvakā vassasatāyukā vassasatajīvino. Te divase divase kappasatasahassaṃ kappasatasahassaṃ anussareyyuṃ. Ananussaritāva bhikkhave, tehi kappā assu, atha kho te cattāro sāvakā vassasatāyukā vassasatajīvino vassasatassa accayena kālaṃ kareyyuṃ. Evaṃ bahukā kho, bhikkhave, kappā abbhatītā atikkantā. Te na sukarā saṅkhātuṃ – ‘ettakā kappā iti vā, ettakāni kappasatāni iti vā, ettakāni kappasahassāni iti vā, ettakāni kappasatasahassāni iti vā’ti. Taṃ kissa hetu? 131住在王舍城竹林。那时,某位婆罗门去到世尊那里;到了之后,与世尊互相问候。交换了友好、值得忆念的谈话后,坐在一旁。坐在一旁的那位婆罗门对世尊如此说:「乔达摩尊者,有多少劫已经过去、已经逝去呢?」「婆罗门,已经过去、已经逝去的劫是众多的。那些不容易计算为:这么多劫,或这么多百劫,或这么多千劫,或这么多十万劫。」
Rājagahe viharati veḷuvane. Atha kho aññataro brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sāraṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho so brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘kīvabahukā nu kho, bho gotama, kappā abbhatītā atikkantā’’ti? ‘‘Bahukā kho, brāhmaṇa, kappā abbhatītā atikkantā. Te na sukarā saṅkhātuṃ – ‘ettakā kappā iti vā, ettakāni kappasatāni iti vā, ettakāni kappasahassāni iti vā, ettakāni kappasatasahassāni iti vā’’’ti.
32「乔达摩尊者,但能作譬喻吗?」「能,婆罗门。」世尊说:「婆罗门,譬如从恒河发源之处到它流入大海之处,在这之间的沙粒,不容易计算为:这么多沙粒,或这么多百沙粒,或这么多千沙粒,或这么多十万沙粒。婆罗门,已经过去、已经逝去的劫比那更多。那些不容易计算为:这么多劫,或这么多百劫,或这么多千劫,或这么多十万劫。那是什么原因呢?婆罗门,此轮回无始。被无明所盖、被渴爱所系的众生,流转轮回,前际不可知。婆罗门,如此长久地,已经体验了苦,已经体验了剧苦,已经体验了不幸,坟场已增长。婆罗门,仅此就足以对一切诸行厌离,足以离贪,足以解脱。」
‘‘Sakkā pana, bho gotama, upamaṃ kātu’’nti? ‘‘Sakkā, brāhmaṇā’’ti bhagavā avoca. ‘‘Seyyathāpi, brāhmaṇa, yato cāyaṃ gaṅgā nadī pabhavati yattha ca mahāsamuddaṃ appeti, yā etasmiṃ antare vālikā sā na sukarā saṅkhātuṃ – ‘ettakā vālikā iti vā, ettakāni vālikasatāni iti vā, ettakāni vālikasahassāni iti vā, ettakāni vālikasatasahassāni iti vā’ti. Tato bahutarā kho, brāhmaṇa, kappā abbhatītā atikkantā. Te na sukarā saṅkhātuṃ – ‘ettakā kappā iti vā, ettakāni kappasatāni iti vā, ettakāni kappasahassāni iti vā, ettakāni kappasatasahassāni iti vā’ti. Taṃ kissa hetu? Anamataggoyaṃ, brāhmaṇa, saṃsāro. Pubbā koṭi na paññāyati avijjānīvaraṇānaṃ sattānaṃ taṇhāsaṃyojanānaṃ sandhāvataṃ saṃsarataṃ. Evaṃ dīgharattaṃ kho, brāhmaṇa, dukkhaṃ paccanubhūtaṃ tibbaṃ paccanubhūtaṃ byasanaṃ paccanubhūtaṃ, kaṭasī vaḍḍhitā. Yāvañcidaṃ , brāhmaṇa, alameva sabbasaṅkhāresu nibbindituṃ, alaṃ virajjituṃ, alaṃ vimuccitu’’nti.
33如是说已,那位婆罗门对世尊如此说:「尊敬的乔达摩,太殊胜了!尊敬的乔达摩,太殊胜了!……(中略)……愿尊敬的乔达摩忆持我为近事男,从今日起终生归依。」第八经。

93比丘们,从前,这韦布喇山叫‘善见’。那时,比丘们,人们叫‘苏比耶’。苏比耶人的寿命有两万岁。比丘们,苏比耶人需要两天才能登上善见山,两天才能下来。而在那时,迦叶世尊、阿拉汉、正自觉者出现在世间。迦叶世尊、阿拉汉、正自觉者有一对名叫提舍与婆罗堕若的弟子双贤,是最优秀的一对。比丘们,你们看,这山的那个名称消失了,那些人死去了,那位世尊也般涅槃了。比丘们,诸行就是这样无常;诸行就是这样不稳固……足以解脱。

Kassapassa, bhikkhave, bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa tissabhāradvājaṃ nāma sāvakayugaṃ ahosi aggaṃ bhaddayugaṃ. Passatha, bhikkhave, sā cevimassa pabbatassa samaññā antarahitā, te ca manussā kālaṅkatā, so ca bhagavā parinibbuto. Evaṃ aniccā , bhikkhave, saṅkhārā; evaṃ addhuvā, bhikkhave, saṅkhārā…pe… alaṃ vimuccituṃ.
94比丘们,而现在,这韦布喇山就叫‘韦布喇’。而现在,比丘们,这些人叫‘摩揭陀人’。摩揭陀人的寿命很短、很少、很脆弱;活得久的也就一百岁或稍多一点。比丘们,摩揭陀人只需片刻就能登上韦布喇山,片刻就能下来。而现在,比丘们,我作为阿拉汉、正自觉者出现在世间。比丘们,我有一对名叫舍利弗和目犍连的弟子双贤,是最优秀的一对。比丘们,将来会有那么一天:这山的这个名称会消失,这些人会死去,我也会般涅槃。比丘们,诸行就是这样无常;诸行就是这样不稳固;诸行就是这样不可信赖。比丘们,光是这一点,就足以对一切诸行厌离,足以离贪,足以解脱。”
‘‘Etarahi kho pana, bhikkhave, imassa vepullassa pabbatassa ‘vepullo’tveva samaññā udapādi. Etarahi kho pana, bhikkhave, imesaṃ manussānaṃ ‘māgadhakā’tveva samaññā udapādi. Māgadhakānaṃ, bhikkhave, manussānaṃ appakaṃ āyuppamāṇaṃ parittaṃ lahukaṃ ; yo ciraṃ jīvati so vassasataṃ appaṃ vā bhiyyo. Māgadhakā, bhikkhave, manussā vepullaṃ pabbataṃ muhuttena ārohanti muhuttena orohanti. Etarahi kho panāhaṃ, bhikkhave, arahaṃ sammāsambuddho loke uppanno. Mayhaṃ kho pana, bhikkhave, sāriputtamoggallānaṃ nāma sāvakayugaṃ aggaṃ bhaddayugaṃ. Bhavissati, bhikkhave, so samayo yā ayañcevimassa pabbatassa samaññā antaradhāyissati, ime ca manussā kālaṃ karissanti, ahañca parinibbāyissāmi. Evaṃ aniccā, bhikkhave, saṅkhārā; evaṃ addhuvā, bhikkhave, saṅkhārā; evaṃ anassāsikā, bhikkhave, saṅkhārā. Yāvañcidaṃ, bhikkhave, alameva sabbasaṅkhāresu nibbindituṃ, alaṃ virajjituṃ, alaṃ vimuccitu’’nti.
95世尊说此。说此已,善逝、导师又说此:
Idamavoca bhagavā. Idaṃ vatvāna sugato athāparaṃ etadavoca satthā –
96“提瓦罗人时叫帕支那梵沙,罗希塔萨人时叫弯曲,
‘‘Pācīnavaṃso tivarānaṃ, rohitassāna vaṅkako;
97苏比耶人时叫善见,摩揭陀人时叫韦布喇。”
Suppiyānaṃ supassoti, māgadhānañca vepullo.
