359如是我闻:有一次,世尊住在毗舍离的大林重阁讲堂里。那时候,一大批高沙喇国的婆罗门使者和马嘎塔国的婆罗门使者,因为一些事务正好也待在毗舍离。这些高沙喇和马嘎塔的婆罗门使者们听说了:‘朋友们,那位释迦族的沙门乔达摩,从释迦族出家,现在正住在毗舍离的大林重阁讲堂。关于那位乔达摩大师,流传着这样美好的声誉:“那位世尊是阿拉汉、正自觉者、明行足、善逝、世间解、无上调御丈夫、天人师、佛陀、世尊。”他亲身证悟了这个有天神、有魔罗、有梵天的世界,以及在沙门、婆罗门、天神和人类中的众生,之后为人们宣说。他宣说的法,开头是善美的,中间是善美的,结尾也是善美的,义理与词句都圆满无缺地阐明那完全清净的梵行生活。能见到这样的阿拉汉,实在是一件很好的事。’
Evaṃ me sutaṃ – ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā vesāliyaṃ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṃ. Tena kho pana samayena sambahulā kosalakā ca brāhmaṇadūtā māgadhakā ca brāhmaṇadūtā vesāliyaṃ paṭivasanti kenacideva karaṇīyena. Assosuṃ kho te kosalakā ca brāhmaṇadūtā māgadhakā ca brāhmaṇadūtā – ‘‘samaṇo khalu, bho, gotamo sakyaputto sakyakulā pabbajito vesāliyaṃ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṃ. Taṃ kho pana bhavantaṃ gotamaṃ evaṃ kalyāṇo kittisaddo abbhuggato – ‘itipi so bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidū anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaṃ buddho bhagavā’. So imaṃ lokaṃ sadevakaṃ samārakaṃ sabrahmakaṃ sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiṃ pajaṃ sadevamanussaṃ sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā pavedeti. So dhammaṃ deseti ādikalyāṇaṃ majjhekalyāṇaṃ pariyosānakalyāṇaṃ sātthaṃ sabyañjanaṃ kevalaparipuṇṇaṃ parisuddhaṃ brahmacariyaṃ pakāseti. Sādhu kho pana tathārūpānaṃ arahataṃ dassanaṃ hotī’’ti.
360于是,这些高沙喇和马嘎塔的婆罗门使者们,就前往大林的重阁讲堂。那时候,那祇多尊者是世尊的侍者。这些高沙喇和马嘎塔的婆罗门使者们,就去到那祇多尊者那里,到了之后,对那祇多尊者这样说:‘那祇多大德,请问那位乔达摩大师现在在哪里呢?我们想见那位大师。’那祇多尊者回答:‘各位贤友,现在不是见世尊的时候,世尊正在独自禅修。’听了这话,这些高沙喇和马嘎塔的婆罗门使者们就在一旁坐下,心里想:‘我们见了那位乔达摩大师之后才离开。'
Atha kho te kosalakā ca brāhmaṇadūtā māgadhakā ca brāhmaṇadūtā yena mahāvanaṃ kūṭāgārasālā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu. Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā nāgito bhagavato upaṭṭhāko hoti. Atha kho te kosalakā ca brāhmaṇadūtā māgadhakā ca brāhmaṇadūtā yenāyasmā nāgito tenupasaṅkamiṃsu. Upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ nāgitaṃ etadavocuṃ – ‘‘kahaṃ nu kho, bho nāgita, etarahi so bhavaṃ gotamo viharati? Dassanakāmā hi mayaṃ taṃ bhavantaṃ gotama’’nti. ‘‘Akālo kho, āvuso, bhagavantaṃ dassanāya, paṭisallīno bhagavā’’ti. Atha kho te kosalakā ca brāhmaṇadūtā māgadhakā ca brāhmaṇadūtā tattheva ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu – ‘‘disvāva mayaṃ taṃ bhavantaṃ gotamaṃ gamissāmā’’ti.
6奥塔达离车维事
Oṭṭhaddhalicchavīvatthu
361这时候,奥塔达离车维也带着一大群离车族随从,往大林的重阁讲堂、往那祇多尊者这边过来了。到了之后,他向那祇多尊者礼敬,然后站在一旁。站在一旁的奥塔达离车维,对那祇多尊者这样说:‘那祇多尊者,那位世尊、阿拉汉、正自觉者现在在哪里呢?我们想见那位世尊、阿拉汉、正自觉者。’那祇多尊者回答:‘马哈离,现在不是见世尊的时候,世尊正在独自禅修。’于是,奥塔达离车维也在那里一旁坐下,心里想:‘见了那位世尊、阿拉汉、正自觉者后,我才离开。'
Oṭṭhaddhopi licchavī mahatiyā licchavīparisāya saddhiṃ yena mahāvanaṃ kūṭāgārasālā yenāyasmā nāgito tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ nāgitaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṃ ṭhito kho oṭṭhaddhopi licchavī āyasmantaṃ nāgitaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘kahaṃ nu kho, bhante nāgita, etarahi so bhagavā viharati arahaṃ sammāsambuddho, dassanakāmā hi mayaṃ taṃ bhagavantaṃ arahantaṃ sammāsambuddha’’nti. ‘‘Akālo kho, mahāli, bhagavantaṃ dassanāya, paṭisallīno bhagavā’’ti. Oṭṭhaddhopi licchavī tattheva ekamantaṃ nisīdi – ‘‘disvāva ahaṃ taṃ bhagavantaṃ gamissāmi arahantaṃ sammāsambuddha’’nti.
362尔时,沙玛内拉狮子来到尊者那祇多处;到达后,礼敬尊者那祇多,站在一旁。站在一旁的沙玛内拉狮子对尊者那祇多说:「尊者迦叶,这些众多的国萨拉婆罗门使者和摩揭陀婆罗门使者来到此处想拜见世尊;欧德大嘴离车族人也与大批离车族人一同来到此处想拜见世尊。善哉,尊者迦叶,请让这些人得以拜见世尊。」
Atha kho sīho samaṇuddeso yenāyasmā nāgito tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ nāgitaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṃ ṭhito kho sīho samaṇuddeso āyasmantaṃ nāgitaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘ete, bhante kassapa, sambahulā kosalakā ca brāhmaṇadūtā māgadhakā ca brāhmaṇadūtā idhūpasaṅkantā bhagavantaṃ dassanāya; oṭṭhaddhopi licchavī mahatiyā licchavīparisāya saddhiṃ idhūpasaṅkanto bhagavantaṃ dassanāya, sādhu, bhante kassapa, labhataṃ esā janatā bhagavantaṃ dassanāyā’’ti.
9那祇多尊者说:‘既然如此,狮子,那就由你去向世尊通报吧。’‘好的,大德。’沙马内拉狮子回应了那祇多尊者后,就往世尊那边去。到了之后,他向世尊礼敬,站在一旁。站在一旁的沙马内拉狮子对世尊这样说:‘世尊,这些为数众多的高沙喇和马嘎塔的婆罗门使者们来到了这里想见世尊;奥塔达离车维也带着一大群离车族随从来到了这里想见世尊。世尊,请您慈悲,让这些大众得到见世尊的机会吧。’世尊说:‘既然如此,狮子,你就在讲堂的后阴凉处铺设座位吧。’‘好的,世尊。’沙马内拉狮子回应世尊后,就在讲堂的后阴凉处铺设了座位。
‘‘Tena hi, sīha, tvaññeva bhagavato ārocehī’’ti. ‘‘Evaṃ, bhante’’ti kho sīho samaṇuddeso āyasmato nāgitassa paṭissutvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṃ ṭhito kho sīho samaṇuddeso bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘ete, bhante, sambahulā kosalakā ca brāhmaṇadūtā māgadhakā ca brāhmaṇadūtā idhūpasaṅkantā bhagavantaṃ dassanāya, oṭṭhaddhopi licchavī mahatiyā licchavīparisāya saddhiṃ idhūpasaṅkanto bhagavantaṃ dassanāya. Sādhu, bhante, labhataṃ esā janatā bhagavantaṃ dassanāyā’’ti. ‘‘Tena hi, sīha, vihārapacchāyāyaṃ āsanaṃ paññapehī’’ti. ‘‘Evaṃ, bhante’’ti kho sīho samaṇuddeso bhagavato paṭissutvā vihārapacchāyāyaṃ āsanaṃ paññapesi.
363然后,世尊走出讲堂,在讲堂后阴凉处已经铺好的座位上坐下。接着,那些高沙喇和马嘎塔的婆罗门使者们,就去到世尊那里。到了之后,与世尊互相问候,进行了一段亲切友善的寒暄交谈之后,就坐在一旁。奥塔达离车维也带着一大群离车族随从,去到世尊那里,到了之后,礼敬世尊,然后坐在一旁。
Atha kho bhagavā vihārā nikkhamma vihārapacchāyāyaṃ paññatte āsane nisīdi. Atha kho te kosalakā ca brāhmaṇadūtā māgadhakā ca brāhmaṇadūtā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodiṃsu. Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sāraṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu. Oṭṭhaddhopi licchavī mahatiyā licchavīparisāya saddhiṃ yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi.
364坐在一旁,欧德大嘴离车族人对世尊说:「尊者,前些日子,离车族之子须那刹多来到我这里,对我说:『马哈离,自从我依止世尊而住,至今已近三年,我确实能见到可爱的、与欲相关的、令人欢喜的天色,却听不到可爱的、与欲相关的、令人欢喜的天声。』尊者,须那刹多离车族之子所未能听到的那些可爱的、与欲相关的、令人欢喜的天声,究竟是实有其声,还是根本不存在呢?」
Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho oṭṭhaddho licchavī bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘purimāni, bhante, divasāni purimatarāni sunakkhatto licchaviputto yenāhaṃ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā maṃ etadavoca – ‘yadagge ahaṃ, mahāli, bhagavantaṃ upanissāya viharāmi, na ciraṃ tīṇi vassāni, dibbāni hi kho rūpāni passāmi piyarūpāni kāmūpasaṃhitāni rajanīyāni, no ca kho dibbāni saddāni suṇāmi piyarūpāni kāmūpasaṃhitāni rajanīyānī’ti. Santāneva nu kho, bhante, sunakkhatto licchaviputto dibbāni saddāni nāssosi piyarūpāni kāmūpasaṃhitāni rajanīyāni, udāhu asantānī’’ti?
12一向修习定
Ekaṃsabhāvitasamādhi
365“摩诃梨,那些可爱、与欲乐相应、让人贪染的天声是确实存在的,离车族之子须那刹多只是没听到它们,并非它们不存在。”
‘‘Santāneva kho, mahāli, sunakkhatto licchaviputto dibbāni saddāni nāssosi piyarūpāni kāmūpasaṃhitāni rajanīyāni, no asantānī’’ti. ‘‘Ko nu kho, bhante, hetu, ko paccayo, yena santāneva sunakkhatto licchaviputto dibbāni saddāni nāssosi piyarūpāni kāmūpasaṃhitāni rajanīyāni, no asantānī’’ti?
366“摩诃梨,这里,另一位比丘在东方专修一种‘一向的定’,这定是为了听闻那些可爱、与欲乐相应、让人贪染的天声,而不是为了看见那些可爱、与欲乐相应、让人贪染的天色。当他在东方专修这种为了听闻那些可爱、与欲乐相应、让人贪染的天声,而不是为了看见那些可爱、与欲乐相应、让人贪染的天色的‘一向定’时,他就能在东方听到那些可爱、与欲乐相应、让人贪染的天声,但看不见那些可爱、与欲乐相应、让人贪染的天色。这是什么原因呢?摩诃梨,正是因为这位比丘在东方专修的‘一向定’,是为了听闻那些可爱、与欲乐相应、让人贪染的天声,而不是为了看见那些可爱、与欲乐相应、让人贪染的天色,所以结果就正好是这样。”
‘‘Idha , mahāli, bhikkhuno puratthimāya disāya ekaṃsabhāvito samādhi hoti dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ, no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ. So puratthimāya disāya ekaṃsabhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ, no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ. Puratthimāya disāya dibbāni rūpāni passati piyarūpāni kāmūpasaṃhitāni rajanīyāni, no ca kho dibbāni saddāni suṇāti piyarūpāni kāmūpasaṃhitāni rajanīyāni. Taṃ kissa hetu? Evañhetaṃ, mahāli, hoti bhikkhuno puratthimāya disāya ekaṃsabhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ, no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.
367“再者,马哈离,一位比丘在南方……在西方……在北方……在上方、下方、横向,修习了‘双俱定’——这种定既是为了来看见那些可爱的、与欲相应的、令人贪染的天色,也是为了来听闻那些可爱的、与欲相应的、令人贪染的天声。当他处在上方、下方、横向修习的这个‘双俱定’中,这种定既是为了来看见那些可爱的、与欲相应的、令人贪染的天色,也为了来听闻那些可爱的、与欲相应的、令人贪染的天声,那么,他就能在上方、下方、横向看见那些可爱的、与欲相应的、令人贪染的天色,也能听闻那些可爱的、与欲相应的、令人贪染的天声。这是什么原因呢?马哈离,正因为如此,当这位比丘在上方、下方、横向修习的‘双俱定’中,这种定既是为了来看见那些可爱的、与欲相应的、令人贪染的天色,也为了来听闻那些可爱的、与欲相应的、令人贪染的天声。马哈离,这就是为什么离车族之子须那刹多,只能听见那些不存在的天声,却听不见那些真实存在、可爱、与欲相应、令人贪染的天声的原因和条件了。”
‘‘Puna caparaṃ, mahāli, bhikkhuno dakkhiṇāya disāya…pe… pacchimāya disāya … uttarāya disāya… uddhamadho tiriyaṃ ekaṃsabhāvito samādhi hoti dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ, no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ. So uddhamadho tiriyaṃ ekaṃsabhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ, no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ. Uddhamadho tiriyaṃ dibbāni rūpāni passati piyarūpāni kāmūpasaṃhitāni rajanīyāni, no ca kho dibbāni saddāni suṇāti piyarūpāni kāmūpasaṃhitāni rajanīyāni. Taṃ kissa hetu? Evañhetaṃ, mahāli, hoti bhikkhuno uddhamadho tiriyaṃ ekaṃsabhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ, no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.
368「于此,玛哈利,比丘对东方修习单向定,为听闻天声,可爱的、与欲相应的、染著的,但不是为见天色,可爱的、与欲相应的、染著的。他对东方修习单向定,为听闻天声,可爱的、与欲相应的、染著的,但不是为见天色,可爱的、与欲相应的、染著的。他在东方听闻天声,可爱的、与欲相应的、染著的,但不见天色,可爱的、与欲相应的、染著的。那是什么原因?玛哈利,这是因为对于比丘,对东方修习单向定,为听闻天声,可爱的、与欲相应的、染著的,但不是为见天色,可爱的、与欲相应的、染著的,就是这样。」
‘‘Idha , mahāli, bhikkhuno puratthimāya disāya ekaṃsabhāvito samādhi hoti dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ, no ca kho dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ. So puratthimāya disāya ekaṃsabhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ, no ca kho dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ. Puratthimāya disāya dibbāni saddāni suṇāti piyarūpāni kāmūpasaṃhitāni rajanīyāni, no ca kho dibbāni rūpāni passati piyarūpāni kāmūpasaṃhitāni rajanīyāni. Taṃ kissa hetu? Evañhetaṃ, mahāli, hoti bhikkhuno puratthimāya disāya ekaṃsabhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ, no ca kho dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.
369「再者,马哈离,比丘向南方……向西方……向北方……向上下横方修习一面定,为了听到可爱的、与欲相关的、令人欢喜的天声,而非为了见到可爱的、与欲相关的、令人欢喜的天色。他向上下横方修习了一面定后,听到了上下横方可爱的、与欲相关的、令人欢喜的天声,但见不到可爱的、与欲相关的、令人欢喜的天色。这是什么原因呢?马哈离,这是因为比丘向上下横方修习一面定只是为了听到可爱的、与欲相关的、令人欢喜的天声,而非为了见到可爱的、与欲相关的、令人欢喜的天色。

So uddhamadho tiriyaṃ ekaṃsabhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ, no ca kho dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ. Uddhamadho tiriyaṃ dibbāni saddāni suṇāti piyarūpāni kāmūpasaṃhitāni rajanīyāni, no ca kho dibbāni rūpāni passati piyarūpāni kāmūpasaṃhitāni rajanīyāni. Taṃ kissa hetu? Evañhetaṃ, mahāli, hoti bhikkhuno uddhamadho tiriyaṃ ekaṃsabhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ, no ca kho dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.
370“马哈离,这里,一位比丘在东方修习了‘双俱定’——这种定既是为了来看见那些可爱的、与欲相应的、令人贪染的天色,也是为了来听闻那些可爱的、与欲相应的、令人贪染的天声。当他处在东方修习的这个‘双俱定’中,这种定既是为了来看见那些可爱的、与欲相应的、令人贪染的天色,也是为了来听闻那些可爱的、与欲相应的、令人贪染的天声,那么,他就能在东方看见那些可爱的、与欲相应的、令人贪染的天色,也能听闻那些可爱的、与欲相应的、令人贪染的天声。这是什么原因呢?马哈离,正因为如此,当这位比丘在东方修习的‘双俱定’中,这种定是既为了来看见那些可爱的、与欲相应的、令人贪染的天色,也为了来听闻那些可爱的、与欲相应的、令人贪染的天声。”
‘‘Idha , mahāli, bhikkhuno puratthimāya disāya ubhayaṃsabhāvito samādhi hoti dibbānañca rūpānaṃ dassanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ dibbānañca saddānaṃ savanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ. So puratthimāya disāya ubhayaṃsabhāvite samādhimhi dibbānañca rūpānaṃ dassanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ, dibbānañca saddānaṃ savanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ. Puratthimāya disāya dibbāni ca rūpāni passati piyarūpāni kāmūpasaṃhitāni rajanīyāni, dibbāni ca saddāni suṇāti piyarūpāni kāmūpasaṃhitāni rajanīyāni. Taṃ kissa hetu? Evañhetaṃ, mahāli, hoti bhikkhuno puratthimāya disāya ubhayaṃsabhāvite samādhimhi dibbānañca rūpānaṃ dassanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ dibbānañca saddānaṃ savanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.
371「再者,马哈离,比丘向南方……向西方……向北方……向上下横方修习两面定,为了见到可爱的、与欲相关的、令人欢喜的天色,也为了听到可爱的、与欲相关的、令人欢喜的天声。他向上下横方修习了两面定后,见到了上下横方可爱的、与欲相关的、令人欢喜的天色,也听到了可爱的、与欲相关的、令人欢喜的天声。这是什么原因呢?马哈离,这是因为比丘向上下横方修习两面定既为了见到可爱的、与欲相关的、令人欢喜的天色,也为了听到可爱的、与欲相关的、令人欢喜的天声。马哈离,这就是那个原因、那个因缘,使得须那刹多离车族之子未能听到那确实存在的可爱的、与欲相关的、令人欢喜的天声。」
‘‘Puna caparaṃ, mahāli, bhikkhuno dakkhiṇāya disāya…pe… pacchimāya disāya… uttarāya disāya… uddhamadho tiriyaṃ ubhayaṃsabhāvito samādhi hoti dibbānañca rūpānaṃ dassanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ, dibbānañca saddānaṃ savanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ. So uddhamadho tiriyaṃ ubhayaṃsabhāvite samādhimhi dibbānañca rūpānaṃ dassanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ dibbānañca saddānaṃ savanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ. Uddhamadho tiriyaṃ dibbāni ca rūpāni passati piyarūpāni kāmūpasaṃhitāni rajanīyāni, dibbāni ca saddāni suṇāti piyarūpāni kāmūpasaṃhitāni rajanīyāni. Taṃ kissa hetu? Evañhetaṃ, mahāli, hoti bhikkhuno uddhamadho tiriyaṃ ubhayaṃsabhāvite samādhimhi dibbānañca rūpānaṃ dassanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ, dibbānañca saddānaṃ savanāya piyarūpānaṃ kāmūpasaṃhitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ. Ayaṃ kho mahāli, hetu, ayaṃ paccayo, yena santāneva sunakkhatto licchaviputto dibbāni saddāni nāssosi piyarūpāni kāmūpasaṃhitāni rajanīyāni, no asantānī’’ti.
372“尊者,难道比丘们在世尊座下修习梵行,就是为了亲证这些定的修习吗?”“不,马哈离,比丘们在我座下修习梵行,不是为了亲证这些定的修习。马哈离,还有其他一些更殊胜、更微妙的法,比丘们正是为了亲证那些法,才在我座下修习梵行的。”
‘‘Etāsaṃ nūna, bhante, samādhibhāvanānaṃ sacchikiriyāhetu bhikkhū bhagavati brahmacariyaṃ carantī’’ti. ‘‘Na kho, mahāli, etāsaṃ samādhibhāvanānaṃ sacchikiriyāhetu bhikkhū mayi brahmacariyaṃ caranti. Atthi kho, mahāli, aññeva dhammā uttaritarā ca paṇītatarā ca, yesaṃ sacchikiriyāhetu bhikkhū mayi brahmacariyaṃ carantī’’ti.

‘‘Katame pana te, bhante, dhammā uttaritarā ca paṇītatarā ca, yesaṃ sacchikiriyāhetu bhikkhū bhagavati brahmacariyaṃ carantī’’ti? ‘‘Idha, mahāli, bhikkhu tiṇṇaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ parikkhayā sotāpanno hoti avinipātadhammo niyato sambodhiparāyaṇo. Ayampi kho, mahāli, dhammo uttaritaro ca paṇītataro ca, yassa sacchikiriyāhetu bhikkhū mayi brahmacariyaṃ caranti.
24“再者,马哈离,一位比丘因为断除了三个结缚,并且贪、嗔、痴变得薄弱,就成为了一位一来者,只回到这个世界一次,就能终结苦。马哈离,这个法也是更殊胜、更微妙的法,比丘们正为了亲证这个法,而在我座下修习梵行。”
‘‘Puna caparaṃ, mahāli, bhikkhu tiṇṇaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ parikkhayā rāgadosamohānaṃ tanuttā sakadāgāmī hoti, sakideva imaṃ lokaṃ āgantvā dukkhassantaṃ karoti. Ayampi kho, mahāli, dhammo uttaritaro ca paṇītataro ca, yassa sacchikiriyāhetu bhikkhū mayi brahmacariyaṃ caranti.
25“再者,马哈离,一位比丘因为断除了五个低层次结缚,就成为了一位化生者,在那里证入般涅槃,再也不会从那个世界返回。马哈离,这个法也是更殊胜、更微妙的法,比丘们正为了亲证这个法,而在我座下修习梵行。”
‘‘Puna caparaṃ, mahāli, bhikkhu pañcannaṃ orambhāgiyānaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ parikkhayā opapātiko hoti, tattha parinibbāyī, anāvattidhammo tasmā lokā. Ayampi kho, mahāli, dhammo uttaritaro ca paṇītataro ca, yassa sacchikiriyāhetu bhikkhū mayi brahmacariyaṃ caranti.
26再者,摩诃梨,比丘通过灭尽诸漏,在当下亲自以证智作证并具足而住于无漏的心解脱、慧解脱。摩诃梨,这也是更上、更殊胜的法,比丘们正是为了证得这个法而在我座下修习梵行。摩诃梨,这些就是那些更上、更殊胜的法,比丘们是为了证得它们而在我座下修习梵行的。
‘‘Puna caparaṃ, mahāli, bhikkhu āsavānaṃ khayā anāsavaṃ cetovimuttiṃ paññāvimuttiṃ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. Ayampi kho, mahāli, dhammo uttaritaro ca paṇītataro ca, yassa sacchikiriyāhetu bhikkhū mayi brahmacariyaṃ caranti. Ime kho te, mahāli, dhammā uttaritarā ca paṇītatarā ca, yesaṃ sacchikiriyāhetu bhikkhū mayi brahmacariyaṃ carantī’’ti.

374“大德,那么,为了证得这些法,是否有道,是否有行道呢?”“摩诃梨,为了证得这些法,确实有道,确实有行道。”
‘‘Atthi pana, bhante, maggo atthi paṭipadā etesaṃ dhammānaṃ sacchikiriyāyā’’ti? ‘‘Atthi kho, mahāli, maggo atthi paṭipadā etesaṃ dhammānaṃ sacchikiriyāyā’’ti.
375“大德,那么,什么是证得这些法的道,什么是行道呢?”“就是这八支圣道,也就是:正见、正思惟、正语、正业、正命、正精进、正念、正定。摩诃梨,这就是为了证得这些法的道,这就是行道。”
‘‘Katamo pana, bhante, maggo katamā paṭipadā etesaṃ dhammānaṃ sacchikiriyāyā’’ti? ‘‘Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo. Seyyathidaṃ – sammādiṭṭhi sammāsaṅkappo sammāvācā sammākammanto sammāājīvo sammāvāyāmo sammāsati sammāsamādhi. Ayaṃ kho, mahāli, maggo ayaṃ paṭipadā etesaṃ dhammānaṃ sacchikiriyāya.

376摩诃梨,有一次,我住在憍赏弥的瞿师罗园。那时,有两位出家者——游方者文荼和木匠弟子阇利耶,来到我这里。他们过来后,与我互相问候,说过了令人欢喜与值得忆念的客套话后,就站在一边。站在一边后,那两位出家者对我这样说:“乔达摩贤友,到底‘命就是身’,还是‘命与身是不同的’呢?”
‘‘Ekamidāhaṃ, mahāli, samayaṃ kosambiyaṃ viharāmi ghositārāme . Atha kho dve pabbajitā – muṇḍiyo ca paribbājako jāliyo ca dārupattikantevāsī yenāhaṃ tenupasaṅkamiṃsu. Upasaṅkamitvā mayā saddhiṃ sammodiṃsu. Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sāraṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ aṭṭhaṃsu. Ekamantaṃ ṭhitā kho te dve pabbajitā maṃ etadavocuṃ – ‘kiṃ nu kho, āvuso gotama, taṃ jīvaṃ taṃ sarīraṃ, udāhu aññaṃ jīvaṃ aññaṃ sarīra’nti?
377「『那么,贤友们,你们仔细听,好好思惟,我将说。』『是的,贤友。』那两位出家人回答我。我如此说:『贤友们,在此,如来出现于世,阿拉汉、正自觉者……(如同第190-212段,应如此详说)如是,贤友们,比丘成就戒……成就并安住于初禅那。贤友们,如此知、如此见的比丘,适合说「命即是身」或「命是一,身是另一」吗?贤友们,如此知、如此见的比丘,适合说「命即是身」或「命是一,身是另一」。然而,贤友们,我如此知、如此见,但我既不说「命即是身」,也不说「命是一,身是另一」……第二禅那……第三禅那……成就并安住于第四禅那。贤友们,如此知、如此见的比丘,适合说「命即是身」或「命是一,身是另一」吗?贤友们,如此知、如此见的比丘,适合说「命即是身」或「命是一,身是另一」。然而,贤友们,我如此知、如此见,但我既不说「命即是身」,也不说「命是一,身是另一」……将心导向、转向智见……贤友们,如此知、如此见的比丘,适合说「命即是身」或「命是一,身是另一」吗?贤友们,如此知、如此见的比丘,适合说「命即是身」或「命是一,身是另一」。然而,贤友们,我如此知、如此见,但我既不说「命即是身」,也不说「命是一,身是另一」……了知「不再有此生」。贤友们,如此知、如此见的比丘,适合说「命即是身」或「命是一,身是另一」吗?贤友们,如此知、如此见的比丘,不适合说「命即是身」或「命是一,身是另一」。然而,贤友们,我如此知、如此见,但我既不说「命即是身」,也不说「命是一,身是另一」。』」世尊如此说。欧德大嘴离车族人对世尊所说欢喜信受。
‘‘‘Tena hāvuso, suṇātha sādhukaṃ manasi karotha bhāsissāmī’’ti. ‘Evamāvuso’ti kho te dve pabbajitā mama paccassosuṃ. Ahaṃ etadavocaṃ – idhāvuso tathāgato loke uppajjati arahaṃ sammāsambuddho…pe… (yathā 190-212 anucchedesu evaṃ vitthāretabbaṃ). Evaṃ kho, āvuso, bhikkhu sīlasampanno hoti…pe… paṭhamaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati. Yo kho, āvuso, bhikkhu evaṃ jānāti evaṃ passati, kallaṃ nu kho tassetaṃ vacanāya – ‘taṃ jīvaṃ taṃ sarīra’nti vā ‘aññaṃ jīvaṃ aññaṃ sarīra’nti vāti?
