330那时,佛陀世尊住在阿奴毕亚。阿奴毕亚是马喇人的一个村镇。就在那个时候,许多非常有名望的释迦族王子们,都追随着已经出家的世尊而出家。当时,摩诃男释迦和阿那律释迦是两兄弟。阿那律释迦生来娇贵。他有三座宫殿:一座供冬季居住,一座供夏季居住,一座供雨季居住。在雨季的宫殿里,他由清一色的男乐师侍奉娱乐,整整四个月都不曾走下宫殿。那时,摩诃男释迦心里生起了这个念头:“现今,这么多有名望的释迦族王子都追随世尊出家了。可是,我们家族却还没有一个人从在家走向无家而出家。不如,要么我出家,要么阿那律出家吧。”于是,摩诃男释迦就来到阿那律释迦那里,到了之后,对阿那律释迦这样说:“亲爱的阿那律啊,现在许多有名望的释迦族王子都追随世尊出家了。可我们家族还没有人从在家走向无家而出家。因此,要么你出家,要么我就出家吧。”“我这个人娇生惯养,我没办法从在家走向无家而出家。你出家吧。”“那么,亲爱的阿那律,你来,我来教教你居家过日子的要务。首先,要让田地犁过。犁过后,要让种子播下。播下后,要引水灌溉。引水灌溉后,要把水排出去。把水排出去后,要除草。除草后,要让庄稼收割。收割后,要让庄稼捆好运走。运走后,要把它们堆成垛。堆成垛后,要让人打场。打场后,要把秸秆清出去。把秸秆清出去后,要把谷壳清出去。把谷壳清出去后,要扬谷。扬谷后,要再把谷子收拢运走。收拢运走后,来年也同样要这样做,后年也还要同样这样做。”“这些工作难道没有尽头吗?这些工作难道看不到终结吗?什么时候这些工作才会结束?什么时候这些工作才能看到终结?我们什么时候才能放下一切事务,具足并享有五种欲乐而自在过活呢?”“亲爱的阿那律,这些工作的确没有尽头,这些工作的确看不到终结。正是在工作还没有完结的时候,父亲们和祖父们就已经命终了。”“既然如此,那你自己去了解居家度日的要务吧。我要从在家走向无家而出家了。”
Tena samayena buddho bhagavā anupiyāyaṃ viharati, anupiyaṃ nāma mallānaṃ nigamo. Tena kho pana samayena abhiññātā abhiññātā sakyakumārā bhagavantaṃ pabbajitaṃ anupabbajanti. Tena kho pana samayena mahānāmo ca sakko anuruddho ca sakko dvebhātikā honti. Anuruddho sakko sukhumālo hoti. Tassa tayo pāsādā honti – eko hemantiko, eko gimhiko, eko vassiko. So vassike pāsāde cattāro māse nippurisehi tūriyehi paricārayamāno na heṭṭhāpāsādaṃ orohati. Atha kho mahānāmassa sakkassa etadahosi – ‘‘etarahi kho abhiññātā abhiññātā sakyakumārā bhagavantaṃ pabbajitaṃ anupabbajanti. Amhākañca pana kulā natthi koci agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajito. Yaṃnūnāhaṃ vā pabbajeyyaṃ, anuruddho vā’’ti. Atha kho mahānāmo sakko yena anuruddho sakko tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā anuruddhaṃ sakkaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘etarahi, tāta anuruddha, abhiññātā abhiññātā sakyakumārā bhagavantaṃ pabbajitaṃ anupabbajanti. Amhākañca pana kulā natthi koci agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajito. Tena hi tvaṃ vā pabbaja, ahaṃ vā pabbajissāmī’’ti. ‘‘Ahaṃ kho sukhumālo, nāhaṃ sakkomi agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajituṃ. Tvaṃ pabbajāhī’’ti. ‘‘Ehi kho te, tāta anuruddha, gharāvāsatthaṃ anusāsissāmi. Paṭhamaṃ khettaṃ kasāpetabbaṃ. Kasāpetvā vapāpetabbaṃ. Vapāpetvā udakaṃ abhinetabbaṃ. Udakaṃ abhinetvā udakaṃ ninnetabbaṃ. Udakaṃ ninnetvā niddhāpetabbaṃ. Niddhāpetvā lavāpetabbaṃ. Lavāpetvā ubbāhāpetabbaṃ. Ubbāhāpetvā puñjaṃ kārāpetabbaṃ. Puñjaṃ kārāpetvā maddāpetabbaṃ. Maddāpetvā palālāni uddharāpetabbāni. Palālāni uddharāpetvā bhusikā uddharāpetabbā. Bhusikaṃ uddharāpetvā opunāpetabbaṃ . Opunāpetvā atiharāpetabbaṃ. Atiharāpetvā āyatimpi vassaṃ evameva kātabbaṃ, āyatimpi vassaṃ evameva kātabba’’nti. ‘‘Na kammā khīyanti? Na kammānaṃ anto paññāyati? Kadā kammā khīyissanti? Kadā kammānaṃ anto paññāyissati? Kadā mayaṃ appossukkā pañcahi kāmaguṇehi samappitā samaṅgībhūtā paricāressāmā’’ti? ‘‘Na hi, tāta anuruddha, kammā khīyanti. Na kammānaṃ anto paññāyati. Akhīṇeva kamme pitaro ca pitāmahā ca kālaṅkatā’’ti. ‘‘Tena hi tvaññeva gharāvāsatthena upajānāhi. Ahaṃ agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajissāmī’’ti.
2于是,阿那律释迦就去到他母亲那里,到了之后,对母亲这样说:“母亲,我想从在家走向无家而出家。请您允许我从在家走向无家而出家吧。”听了这话,阿那律释迦的母亲对阿那律释迦这样说:“我亲爱的儿子阿那律啊,你们兄弟俩是我喜爱、可意、无可厌弃的人。即使是因为死亡,我也心不甘情不愿地与你们分离,更何况是在你们活着的时候,我怎么会允许你们从在家走向无家而出家呢?” 阿那律释迦第二次……乃至……第三次对母亲这样说:“母亲,我想从在家走向无家而出家。请您允许我从在家走向无家而出家吧。”在那时,跋提释迦王统理着释迦族的国政,他也是阿那律释迦的朋友。这时,阿那律释迦的母亲心想:“这位跋提释迦王统理着释迦族的国政,又是阿那律释迦的朋友,他是不会愿意从在家走向无家而出家的。”于是,她对阿那律释迦这样说:“亲爱的阿那律,如果跋提释迦王从在家走向无家而出家,那你也跟着出家吧。”于是,阿那律释迦来到跋提释迦王那里,到了之后,对跋提释迦王这样说:“朋友,我的出家就系于你了。”“朋友,如果你的出家是系于我身,或者不系于我身,都由你便。你随心欢喜地去出家吧。”“来吧,朋友,我们俩一起从在家走向无家而出家吧。”“朋友,我没办法从在家走向无家而出家。除了这件事,我还有什么其他能为你做的,我一定去做。你去出家吧。”“朋友,我母亲这样对我说:‘亲爱的阿那律,如果跋提释迦王从在家走向无家而出家,那你也跟着出家吧。’”“朋友,你刚才可是说过那句话了。朋友,如果你的出家是系于我身,或者不系于我身,都由你便。你随心欢喜地去出家吧。”“来吧,朋友,我们俩一起从在家走向无家而出家吧。”
Atha kho anuruddho sakko yena mātā tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā mātaraṃ etadavoca – ‘‘icchāmahaṃ, amma, agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajituṃ. Anujānāhi maṃ agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajjāyā’’ti. Evaṃ vutte anuruddhassa sakkassa mātā anuruddhaṃ sakkaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘tumhe kho me, tāta anuruddha, dve puttā piyā manāpā appaṭikūlā. Maraṇenapi vo akāmakā vinā bhavissāmi. Kiṃ panāhaṃ tumhe jīvante anujānissāmi agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajjāyā’’ti? Dutiyampi kho…pe… tatiyampi kho anuruddho sakko mātaraṃ etadavoca – ‘‘icchāmahaṃ, amma, agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajituṃ. Anujānāhi maṃ agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajjāyā’’ti . Tena kho pana samayena bhaddiyo sakyarājā sakyānaṃ rajjaṃ kāreti. So ca anuruddhassa sakkassa sahāyo hoti. Atha kho anuruddhassa sakkassa mātā – ‘ayaṃ kho bhaddiyo sakyarājā sakyānaṃ rajjaṃ kāreti; anuruddhassa sakkassa sahāyo; so na ussahati agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajitu’nti – anuruddhaṃ sakkaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘sace, tāta anuruddha, bhaddiyo sakyarājā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajati, evaṃ tvampi pabbajāhī’’ti. Atha kho anuruddho sakko yena bhaddiyo sakyarājā tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā bhaddiyaṃ sakyarājānaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘mama kho, samma, pabbajjā tava paṭibaddhā’’ti. ‘‘Sace te, samma, pabbajjā mama paṭibaddhā vā appaṭibaddhā vā sā hotu, ahaṃ tayā; yathā sukhaṃ pabbajāhī’’ti. ‘‘Ehi, samma, ubho agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajissāmā’’ti. ‘‘Nāhaṃ, samma, sakkomi agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajitunti . Yaṃ te sakkā aññaṃ mayā kātuṃ, kyāhaṃ karissāmi. Tvaṃ pabbajāhī’’ti. ‘‘Mātā kho maṃ, samma, evamāha – ‘sace, tāta anuruddha, bhaddiyo sakyarājā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajati, evaṃ tvampi pabbajāhī’’’ti. ‘‘Bhāsitā kho pana te, samma, esā vācā. Sace te, samma, pabbajjā mama paṭibaddhā vā, appaṭibaddhā vā sā hotu, ahaṃ tayā; yathā sukhaṃ pabbajāhī’’ti. ‘‘Ehi, samma, ubho agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajissāmā’’ti.
3在那个时代,人们是讲真话的,是信守承诺的。这时,跋提释迦王对阿那律释迦这样说:“朋友,请等我七年。七年过后,我们俩再一起从在家走向无家而出家吧。”“朋友,七年太久了。我可没办法等上七年。”“朋友,那等我六年……五年……四年……三年……两年……一年吧。一年过后,我们俩一起从在家走向无家而出家。”“朋友,一年也太久了。我可没办法等上一年。”“朋友,那等我七个月。七个月过后,我们俩再一起从在家走向无家而出家。”“朋友,七个月也太久了。我可没办法等上七个月。”“朋友,那等我六个月……五个月……四个月……三个月……两个月……一个月……半个月吧。半个月过后,我们俩再一起从在家走向无家而出家。”“朋友,半个月也太久了。我可没办法等上半个月。”“朋友,请等我七天,等我把国政交付给我的儿子们和兄弟们。”“朋友,七天不算久,我就等你吧。”
Tena kho pana samayena manussā saccavādino honti, saccapaṭiññā. Atha kho bhaddiyo sakyarājā anuruddhaṃ sakkaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘āgamehi, samma, sattavassāni. Sattannaṃ vassānaṃ accayena ubho agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajissāmā’’ti. ‘‘Aticiraṃ, samma, sattavassāni. Nāhaṃ sakkomi sattavassāni āgametu’’nti. ‘‘Āgamehi, samma, chavassāni…pe… pañcavassāni… cattāri vassāni… tīṇi vassāni… dve vassāni… ekaṃ vassaṃ. Ekassa vassassa accayena ubho agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajissāmā’’ti. ‘‘Aticiraṃ, samma, ekavassaṃ. Nāhaṃ sakkomi ekaṃ vassaṃ āgametu’’nti. ‘‘Āgamehi, samma, sattamāse. Sattannaṃ māsānaṃ accayena ubhopi agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajissāmā’’ti. ‘‘Aticiraṃ, samma, sattamāsā. Nāhaṃ sakkomi sattamāse āgametu’’nti. ‘‘Āgamehi, samma, cha māse…pe… pañca māse… cattāro māse… tayo māse… dve māse… ekaṃ māsaṃ… aḍḍhamāsaṃ. Aḍḍhamāsassa accayena ubhopi agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajissāmā’’ti. ‘‘Aticiraṃ, samma, aḍḍhamāso. Nāhaṃ sakkomi aḍḍhamāsaṃ āgametu’’nti. ‘‘Āgamehi, samma, sattāhaṃ yāvāhaṃ putte ca bhātaro ca rajjaṃ niyyādemī’’ti. ‘‘Na ciraṃ, samma, sattāho, āgamessāmī’’ti.
331于是,跋提释迦王、阿那律、阿难、跋咕、吉米喇和提婆达多——加上理发师优波离一共七人——如同从前由四部军开道前往游乐园那样,他们也由四部军开道出发了。他们走出很远后,命军队折返,然后进入到别的国境,脱下身上的装饰品,用上衣把它们包成一个包裹,并对理发师优波离这样说:“喂,优波离,你回去吧。这些足够你维持生计了。”就在理发师优波离往回走的时候,他心里生起了这个念头:“释迦族人是很凶暴的。他们可能会因为‘这些王子就是被这家伙撺掇走的’而把我处死。连这些释迦族王子都要从在家走向无家而出家了,更何况是我呢?”于是,他解开包裹,把那些财宝挂在树上,说道:“谁看到了,就当作是布施给他的,拿走吧。”说完,便又朝着那些释迦族王子们所在的地方赶去。那些释迦族王子们远远地看见理发师优波离走过来,看到了他后,便对理发师优波离说:“喂,优波离,你为什么又折返回来了?”“公子们,在我往回走的时候,我心里生起了这个念头:‘释迦族人是很凶暴的。他们可能会因为‘这些王子就是被这家伙撺掇走的’而把我处死。连这些释迦族王子都要从在家走向无家而出家了,何况是我呢?’所以,公子们,我解开包裹,把那些财宝挂在树上,说:‘谁看到了,就当作是布施给他的,拿走吧。’然后我就回转来了。”“做得对,优波离,你没有回去是对的。释迦族人是很凶暴的。他们也会因为你被看作是‘撺掇走这些王子的人’而把你处死的。”
Atha kho bhaddiyo ca sakyarājā anuruddho ca ānando ca bhagu ca kimilo ca devadatto ca, upālikappakena sattamā, yathā pure caturaṅginiyā senāya uyyānabhūmiṃ niyyanti, evameva caturaṅginiyā senāya niyyiṃsu. Te dūraṃ gantvā senaṃ nivattāpetvā paravisayaṃ okkamitvā ābharaṇaṃ omuñcitvā uttarāsaṅgena bhaṇḍikaṃ bandhitvā upāliṃ kappakaṃ etadavocuṃ – ‘‘handa, bhaṇe upāli, nivattassu; alaṃ te ettakaṃ jīvikāyā’’ti. Atha kho upālissa kappakassa nivattantassa etadahosi – ‘‘caṇḍā kho sākiyā; iminā kumārā nippātitāti ghātāpeyyumpi maṃ. Ime hi nāma sakyakumārā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajissanti. Kimaṅga panāha’’nti. Bhaṇḍikaṃ muñcitvā taṃ bhaṇḍaṃ rukkhe ālaggetvā ‘yo passati, dinnaṃyeva haratū’ti vatvā yena te sakyakumārā tenupasaṅkami. Addasāsuṃ kho te sakyakumārā upāliṃ kappakaṃ dūratova āgacchantaṃ. Disvāna upāliṃ kappakaṃ etadavocuṃ – ‘‘kissa, bhaṇe upāli, nivattesī’’ti? ‘‘Idha me, ayyaputtā, nivattantassa etadahosi – ‘caṇḍā kho sākiyā; iminā kumārā nippātitāti ghātāpeyyumpi maṃ. Ime hi nāma sakyakumārā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajissanti. Kimaṅga panāha’nti. So kho ahaṃ, ayyaputtā, bhaṇḍikaṃ muñcitvā taṃ bhaṇḍaṃ rukkhe ālaggetvā ‘yo passati, dinnaññeva haratū’ti vatvā tatomhi paṭinivatto’’ti. ‘‘Suṭṭhu, bhaṇe upāli, akāsi yampi na nivatto . Caṇḍā kho sākiyā; iminā kumārā nippātitāti ghātāpeyyumpi ta’’nti.
5于是,这些释迦族王子就带着理发师优波离,来到世尊那里。到了之后,顶礼世尊,然后坐在一旁。在一旁坐定后,那些释迦族王子对世尊这样说:“尊者,我们释迦族人是以骄傲著称的。尊者,这位理发师优波离,是我们长期以来的侍者。请世尊先度他出家吧。这样,我们将会向他行问讯礼、起立承迎、合掌致敬以及恭敬承事之礼。如此一来,我们释迦族人的那种‘释迦傲气’就会被降服了。”
Atha kho sakyakumārā upāliṃ kappakaṃ ādāya yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu, upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu. Ekamantaṃ nisinnā kho te sakyakumārā bhagavantaṃ etadavocuṃ – ‘‘mayaṃ, bhante, sākiyā nāma mānassino. Ayaṃ , bhante, upāli kappako amhākaṃ dīgharattaṃ paricārako. Imaṃ bhagavā paṭhamaṃ pabbājetu. Imassa mayaṃ abhivādanapaccuṭṭhānaañjalikammasāmīcikammaṃ karissāma. Evaṃ amhākaṃ sākiyānaṃ sākiyamāno nimmānāyissatī’’ti .
6于是,世尊就先度理发师优波离出家,之后才度那些释迦族王子。那位跋提长老,就在那个雨安居期间,亲身证得了三明。阿那律长老则生起了天眼。阿难长老亲身证得了入流果。提婆达多则修成了凡夫的神通。
Atha kho bhagavā upāliṃ kappakaṃ paṭhamaṃ pabbājesi, pacchā te sakyakumāre. Atha kho āyasmā bhaddiyo teneva antaravassena tisso vijjā sacchākāsi. Āyasmā anuruddho dibbacakkhuṃ uppādesi. Āyasmā ānando sotāpattiphalaṃ sacchākāsi. Devadatto pothujjanikaṃ iddhiṃ abhinipphādesi.
332就在那时候,跋提长老无论是去到树林里,坐在树根下,或是待在空闲处,都常常不由自主地发出这样的感慨:“啊,安乐啊!啊,安乐啊!”这时,众多比丘来到世尊那里,顶礼世尊后,坐在一旁。那些坐在一旁的比丘对世尊这样说:“尊者,跋提长老无论是去到树林里,坐在树根下,或是待在空闲处,都常常不由自主地发出这样的感慨:‘啊,安乐啊!啊,安乐啊!’尊者,毫无疑问,跋提长老一定是没有乐在梵行吧。他准是忆念起从前做国王时的快乐,所以无论是去到树林里,坐在树根下,还是待在空闲处,才会常常感慨:‘啊,安乐啊!啊,安乐啊!’”
Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā bhaddiyo araññagatopi rukkhamūlagatopi suññāgāragatopi abhikkhaṇaṃ udānaṃ udānesi – ‘‘aho sukhaṃ, aho sukha’’nti. Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu, upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu. Ekamantaṃ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū bhagavantaṃ etadavocuṃ – ‘‘āyasmā, bhante, bhaddiyo araññagatopi rukkhamūlagatopi suññāgāragatopi abhikkhaṇaṃ udānaṃ udānesi – ‘aho sukhaṃ, aho sukha’nti. Nissaṃsayaṃ kho, bhante, āyasmā bhaddiyo anabhiratova brahmacariyaṃ carati. Taṃyeva vā purimaṃ rajjasukhaṃ samanussaranto araññagatopi rukkhamūlagatopi suññāgāragatopi abhikkhaṇaṃ udānaṃ udānesi – ‘aho sukhaṃ, aho sukha’’’nti.
8于是,世尊对某一位比丘说:“来,比丘,你以我的名义去叫跋提比丘,说:‘跋提供友,导师叫你。’”“是的,尊者。”那位比丘应答了世尊后,便来到跋提长老那里,对跋提长老说:“跋提供友,导师叫你。”“是的,友。”跋提长老应答了那位比丘后,便来到世尊那里,顶礼世尊后,坐在一旁。世尊对坐于一旁的跋提长老这样说:“跋提,据说你无论是去到树林里,坐在树根下,还是待在空闲处,都常常不由自主地发出这样的感慨:‘啊,安乐啊!啊,安乐啊!’这是真的吗?”“确实如此,尊者。”“跋提,你是见到了怎样的意义和利益,才使你无论是去到树林里,坐在树根下,还是待在空闲处,都常常不由自主地感慨:‘啊,安乐啊!啊,安乐啊!’呢?”“尊者,从前我还是国王的时候,在王宫内部,守卫力量被安排得十分严密;在王宫外部,守卫力量也被安排得十分严密;在城内,守卫力量被安排得十分严密;在城外,守卫力量也被安排得十分严密;在国内,守卫力量被安排得十分严密;在国外,守卫力量也被安排得十分严密。尊者,我虽然是如此地被保护、被守护着,但我住的时候,内心却是恐惧的、不安的、疑虑的、提心吊胆的。然而现在,尊者,我独自一人,无论是在树林里,坐在树根下,还是待在空闲处,内心都是不恐惧的、不不安的、不疑虑的、不提心吊胆的。我无忧无虑,柔和温顺,靠他人的布施过活,内心如同野鹿那般自在。尊者,我就是见到了这样的意义和利益,所以无论是在树林里,坐在树根下,还是待在空闲处,都常常不由自主地发出这样的感慨:‘啊,安乐啊!啊,安乐啊!’”这时,世尊明白了这其中的意义,便在那时,发出了如下的感慨:
Atha kho bhagavā aññataraṃ bhikkhuṃ āmantesi – ‘‘ehi tvaṃ, bhikkhu, mama vacanena bhaddiyaṃ bhikkhuṃ āmantehi – ‘satthā taṃ, āvuso bhaddiya, āmantetī’’’ti . ‘‘Evaṃ bhante’’ti kho so bhikkhu bhagavato paṭissutvā yenāyasmā bhaddiyo tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ bhaddiyaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘satthā taṃ, āvuso bhaddiya, āmantetī’’ti. ‘‘Evamāvuso’’ti kho āyasmā bhaddiyo tassa bhikkhuno paṭissutvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinnaṃ kho āyasmantaṃ bhaddiyaṃ bhagavā etadavoca – ‘‘saccaṃ kira tvaṃ, bhaddiya, araññagatopi rukkhamūlagatopi suññāgāragatopi abhikkhaṇaṃ udānaṃ udānesi – ‘aho sukhaṃ, aho sukha’’’nti? ‘‘Evaṃ bhante’’ti. ‘‘Kiṃ pana tvaṃ, bhaddiya, atthavasaṃ sampassamāno araññagatopi rukkhamūlagatopi suññāgāragatopi abhikkhaṇaṃ udānaṃ udānesi – ‘aho sukhaṃ aho sukha’’’nti? ‘‘Pubbe me, bhante, rañño satopi antopi antepure rakkhā susaṃvihitā hoti, bahipi antepure rakkhā susaṃvihitā hoti, antopi nagare rakkhā susaṃvihitā hoti, bahipi nagare rakkhā susaṃvihitā hoti, antopi janapade rakkhā susaṃvihitā hoti, bahipi janapade rakkhā susaṃvihitā hoti. So kho ahaṃ, bhante, evaṃ rakkhitopi gopitopi santo bhīto ubbiggo ussaṅkī utrasto viharāmi. Etarahi kho pana ahaṃ eko, bhante, araññagatopi rukkhamūlagatopi suññāgāragatopi abhīto anubbiggo anussaṅkī anutrasto appossukko pannalomo paradattavutto migabhūtena cetasā viharāmīti. Imaṃ kho ahaṃ, bhante, atthavasaṃ sampassamāno araññagatopi rukkhamūlagatopi suññāgāragatopi abhikkhaṇaṃ udānaṃ udānemi – ‘aho sukhaṃ, aho sukha’’’nti. 11内心没有愤怒的人,已超越各种有与无的状态,他是无有恐惧、安乐、无忧的,诸天都无法见到他。

12那时,世尊在阿奴毕亚随宜住了一段时间后,便向国桑比方向游行。依次游行,到达了国桑比。就在那里,世尊住在国桑比的瞿师多园。那时,提婆达多独自静处时,心中生起了这样的念头:我要取信于谁,才能使我在他那里得到巨大的利养和恭敬呢?接着,提婆达多这样想:这位未生怨王子年轻,而且未来前途光明。我何不取信于未生怨王子呢?在他那里取信之后,我就能得到巨大的利养和恭敬了。

333于是,提婆达多收拾好住处,拿着衣钵,向王舍城出发。依次前行,到达了王舍城。那时,提婆达多隐没了自己的本相,变化成童子之形,腰缠蛇带,出现在未生怨王子的膝上。未生怨王子因此感到害怕、惊慌、疑惧、恐怖。接着,提婆达多对未生怨王子说:王子,你怕我吗?是的,我怕。你是谁?我是提婆达多。尊者,提婆达多大德,如果您真的是,就请显现您的本来面目吧。于是,提婆达多隐没童子之形,穿着僧伽梨衣,持衣钵,站在了未生怨王子面前。未生怨王子因提婆达多这个神通变化而生起了极大的净信,每天早晚用五百辆车前去侍奉,并且送去五百锅饭食作为供养。那时,提婆达多被利养、恭敬和名声所征服、所覆心,生起了这样的欲望:我要统领比丘僧团。就在这个心念生起的同时,提婆达多便退失了那种神通。
Atha kho bhagavā anupiyāyaṃ yathābhirantaṃ viharitvā yena kosambī tena cārikaṃ pakkāmi. Anupubbena cārikaṃ caramāno yena kosambī tadavasari. Tatra sudaṃ bhagavā kosambiyaṃ viharati ghositārāme. Atha kho devadattassa rahogatassa paṭisallīnassa evaṃ cetaso parivitakko udapādi – ‘‘kaṃ nu kho ahaṃ pasādeyyaṃ, yasmiṃ me pasanne bahulābhasakkāro uppajjeyyā’’ti? Atha kho devadattassa etadahosi – ‘‘ayaṃ kho ajātasattu kumāro taruṇo ceva āyatiṃ bhaddo ca. Yaṃnūnāhaṃ ajātasattuṃ kumāraṃ pasādeyyaṃ. Tasmiṃ me pasanne bahulābhasakkāro uppajjissatī’’ti.
10就在那时,有位名叫咖古多的拘利子,是大德大目犍连的侍者,刚过世不久,投生到了某一意生身天界。他所获得的身体如此之大,就像两三个马喇国的村落田地那么大。他凭借那样的身体,既不会困扰自己,也不会困扰他人。那时,咖古多天子来到大德大目犍连这里,向大德大目犍连礼敬后,站在一旁。站在一旁的咖古多天子对大德大目犍连这样说:尊者,提婆达多被利养、恭敬和名声所征服、所覆心,生起了这样的欲望:我要统领比丘僧团。就在这个心念生起的同时,尊者,提婆达多便退失了那种神通。咖古多天子说了这些。说完后,他向大德大目犍连礼敬,右绕之后,就在那里消失了。

Atha kho devadatto kumārakavaṇṇaṃ paṭisaṃharitvā saṅghāṭipattacīvaradharo ajātasattussa kumārassa purato aṭṭhāsi. Atha kho ajātasattu kumāro devadattassa iminā iddhipāṭihāriyena abhippasanno pañcahi rathasatehi sāyaṃ pātaṃ upaṭṭhānaṃ gacchati, pañca ca thālipākasatāni bhattābhihāro abhiharīyati. Atha kho devadattassa lābhasakkārasilokena abhibhūtassa pariyādinnacittassa evarūpaṃ icchāgataṃ uppajji – ‘‘ahaṃ bhikkhusaṅghaṃ pariharissāmī’’ti . Saha cittuppādāva devadatto tassā iddhiyā parihāyi.

Tassa evarūpo attabhāvappaṭilābho hoti – seyyathāpi nāma dve vā tīṇi vā māgadhakāni gāmakkhettāni. So tena attabhāvappaṭilābhena neva attānaṃ na paraṃ byābādheti. Atha kho kakudho devaputto yenāyasmā mahāmoggallāno tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ mahāmoggallānaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṃ ṭhito kho kakudho devaputto āyasmantaṃ mahāmoggallānaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘devadattassa, bhante, lābhasakkārasilokena abhibhūtassa pariyādinnacittassa evarūpaṃ icchāgataṃ uppajji – ‘ahaṃ bhikkhusaṅghaṃ pariharissāmī’ti. 13目犍连,世间存在有这样五种导师。是哪五种呢?目犍连,在此有一种导师,自己戒行不清净,却宣称:我是戒行清净的,我的戒是清净的、皎洁的、无染污的。他的弟子们这样了解他:这位尊师自己戒行不清净,却宣称自己是戒行清净的,我的戒是清净的、皎洁的、无染污的。而我们如果去告诉在家人,这不会使他高兴。既然是他所不乐意的,我们又怎么能那样对待他呢?况且,他在衣服、饮食、住处、病者所需的医药资具方面都认可我们,你们怎么做,就凭那个被大家知道吧。目犍连,弟子们就这样在戒行方面守护这样的导师;而这样的导师也期望弟子们在戒行方面这样守护他。
‘‘Kiṃ pana te, moggallāna, kakudho devaputto cetasā ceto paricca vidito? Yaṃ kiñci kakudho devaputto bhāsati sabbaṃ taṃ tatheva hoti, no aññathā’’ti? ‘‘Cetasā ceto paricca vidito ca me, bhante, kakudho devaputto. Yaṃ kiñci kakudho devaputto bhāsati sabbaṃ taṃ tatheva hoti, no aññathā’’ti. ‘‘Rakkhassetaṃ, moggallāna, vācaṃ. Rakkhassetaṃ, moggallāna, vācaṃ. Idāni so moghapuriso attanāva attānaṃ pātukarissati.

334「目犍连,世间有此五种导师存在。哪五种?「目犍连,这里,某位导师戒不清净,却自称『我戒清净』,『我的戒清净、洁白、无染』。其弟子如此知道:『这位尊者导师戒不清净,却自称我戒清净,我的戒清净、洁白、无染。我们若向在家人告知,他将不欢喜。对他不欢喜的事,我们如何以此对待他?况且他受用衣、食、住处、病人所需医药资具——你将做什么,你自己将以此被知。』目犍连,弟子们以戒守护如此导师;如此导师也期待弟子们以戒守护。

19“然而,目犍连,我自身戒行清净,便声称:‘我是戒净者’,并说:‘我的戒是清净的、纯白的、未受污染的。’但我的弟子们并不从戒行上保护我;我也不期望被弟子们从戒行上保护。我自身活命清净……(中略)……自身说法清净……(中略)……自身记说清净……(中略)……自身智见清净,便声称:‘我是智见净者’,并说:‘我的智见是清净的、纯白的、未受污染的。’但我的弟子们并不从智见上保护我;我也不期望被弟子们从智见上保护。”
‘‘Ahaṃ kho pana, moggallāna, parisuddhasīlo samāno ‘parisuddhasīlomhī’ti paṭijānāmi ‘parisuddhaṃ me sīlaṃ pariyodātaṃ asaṃkiliṭṭha’nti ca. Na ca maṃ sāvakā sīlato rakkhanti; na cāhaṃ sāvakehi sīlato rakkhaṃ paccāsīsāmi. Parisuddhājīvo samāno…pe… parisuddhadhammadesano samāno…pe… parisuddhaveyyākaraṇo samāno…pe… parisuddhañāṇadassano samāno ‘parisuddhañāṇadassanomhī’ti paṭijānāmi ‘parisuddhaṃ me ñāṇadassanaṃ pariyodātaṃ asaṃkiliṭṭha’nti ca. 335那时,世尊在憍赏弥随意住了一段时间后,便向王舍城出发游历。一路次第游走,抵达了王舍城。在那里,世尊住在王舍城竹林中的松鼠饲养处。那时,众多比丘来到世尊那里,到了之后,礼敬世尊,然后坐在一边。坐在一边的比丘们这样对世尊说:“大德,未生怨王子每天早晚各以五百辆车,以及五百份熟食的饭食供给,去服侍提婆达多。”世尊说:“比丘们,不要羡慕提婆达多所得的利养、恭敬与名声。比丘们,只要未生怨王子还这样早晚以五百辆车,并带去五百份熟食饭食去服侍他,提婆达多在善法上就只能预期衰退,而不是增长。”

21“比丘们,这就像对着一只恶狗的鼻子去砸破苦胆,比丘们,那样的话,这只狗会变得比之前更加凶暴几倍。同样地,比丘们,只要提婆达多还得到未生怨王子那样早晚五百辆车、五百份熟食饭食的服侍,提婆达多在善法上就只能预期衰退,而不是增长。”

336那时的机缘是这样:世尊被大集会围绕着,其中包括国王在内的集会,正坐着说法。那时,提婆达多从座位上站起,把上衣搭在一肩,面向世尊的方向合掌致敬,然后对世尊这样说道:“尊者,世尊现在年迈了,老了,年纪大了,已到人生末期,年寿已尽。尊者,世尊现在请放下操心,安住于现法乐住吧。请把比丘僧团交给我,我会带领比丘僧团。” “够了,提婆达多,你别想着带领比丘僧团。” 提婆达多第二次……乃至……第三次又对世尊这样说道:“尊者,世尊现在年迈了,老了,年纪大了,已到人生末期,年寿已尽。尊者,世尊现在请放下操心,安住于现法乐住吧。请把比丘僧团交给我,我会带领比丘僧团。” “提婆达多,我连舍利弗和大目犍连都不会把比丘僧团交给他们,更何况是你这个废物、该被唾弃的东西!” 那时,提婆达多心想:“当着有国王在的集会,世尊用‘该被唾弃的东西’这种话斥责我,却抬高舍利弗和大目犍连。”他生起了怒气,心里不满,向世尊行礼,右绕之后,便离开了。这就是提婆达多对世尊生起的第一次怨恨。

Ahaṃ bhikkhusaṅghaṃ pariharissāmī’’ti. ‘‘Alaṃ, devadatta, mā te rucci bhikkhusaṅghaṃ pariharitu’’nti. Dutiyampi kho devadatto…pe… tatiyampi kho devadatto bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘jiṇṇo dāni, bhante, bhagavā vuḍḍho mahallako addhagato vayoanuppatto. Appossukko dāni, bhante, bhagavā diṭṭhadhammasukhavihāraṃ anuyutto viharatu, mamaṃ bhikkhusaṅghaṃ nissajjatu. Ahaṃ bhikkhusaṅghaṃ pariharissāmī’’ti. ‘‘Sāriputtamoggallānānampi kho ahaṃ, devadatta, bhikkhusaṅghaṃ na nissajjeyyaṃ , kiṃ pana tuyhaṃ chavassa kheḷāsakassā’’ti! Atha kho devadatto – sarājikāya maṃ bhagavā parisāya kheḷāsakavādena apasādeti, sāriputtamoggallāneva ukkaṃsatīti – kupito anattamano bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṃ katvā pakkāmi. Ayañcarahi devadattassa bhagavati paṭhamo āghāto ahosi.
28那时,世尊对比丘们说道:“那么,比丘们,僧团应当为提婆达多在王舍城作公开宣告:‘提婆达多以前的品行是一种样子,现在的品行是另一种样子。凡是提婆达多以身体或言语所做的,都不应被看作是佛陀做的、法做的或僧团做的,只应被看作是提婆达多个人做的。’ 比丘们,应当这样来做:应当由一位有能力、有经验的比丘来告知僧团——”

‘‘Kataṃ saṅghena devadattassa rājagahe pakāsanīyaṃ kammaṃ – ‘pubbe devadattassa aññā pakati ahosi, idāni aññā pakati. Yaṃ devadatto kareyya kāyena vācāya, na tena buddho vā dhammo vā saṅgho vā daṭṭhabbo, devadattova tena daṭṭhabbo’ti. Khamati saṅghassa, tasmā tuṇhī, evametaṃ dhārayāmī’’ti.
338那时,世尊对舍利弗长老说:“既然如此,舍利弗,你去王舍城对提婆达多进行公开宣告吧。”“世尊,我以前在王舍城称赞过提婆达多:‘瞿低之子有大神通,瞿低之子有大威力。’世尊,我该怎么去王舍城对提婆达多进行公开宣告呢?”“舍利弗,你以前在王舍城称赞提婆达多,说的难道不是事实吗——‘瞿低之子有大神通,瞿低之子有大威力’?”“是的,世尊。”“正是如此,舍利弗,你同样只按事实去王舍城对提婆达多进行公开宣告就行了。”“是的,世尊。”舍利弗长老回应了世尊。”
Atha kho bhagavā āyasmantaṃ sāriputtaṃ āmantesi – ‘‘tena hi tvaṃ, sāriputta, devadattaṃ rājagahe pakāsehī’’ti. ‘‘Pubbe mayā, bhante, devadattassa rājagahe vaṇṇo bhāsito – ‘mahiddhiko godhiputto, mahānubhāvo godhiputto’ti. Kathāhaṃ, bhante, devadattaṃ rājagahe pakāsemī’’ti? ‘‘Nanu tayā, sāriputta, bhūtoyeva devadattassa rājagahe vaṇṇo bhāsito – ‘mahiddhiko godhiputto, mahānubhāvo godhiputto’’’ ti? ‘‘Evaṃ bhante’’ti. ‘‘Evameva kho tvaṃ, sāriputta, bhūtaṃyeva devadattaṃ rājagahe pakāsehī’’ti. ‘‘Evaṃ bhante’’ti kho āyasmā sāriputto bhagavato paccassosi.
33那时,世尊对比丘们说:“既然如此,比丘们,僧团应委任舍利弗去王舍城对提婆达多进行公开宣告:‘以前提婆达多的本性是另一种样子,现在他的本性是另一种样子。提婆达多今后以身体或语言所做的任何事,都不应从中看到佛、法、僧,只应从中看到提婆达多本人。’而比丘们,应该这样委任:先要请求舍利弗。请求之后,由一位能干、有能力的比丘向僧团通报——”

Yācitvā byattena bhikkhunā paṭibalena saṅgho ñāpetabbo –

‘‘Sammato saṅghena āyasmā sāriputto devadattaṃ rājagahe pakāsetuṃ – ‘pubbe devadattassa aññā pakati ahosi, idāni aññā pakati. Yaṃ devadatto kareyya kāyena vācāya, na tena buddho vā dhammo vā saṅgho vā daṭṭhabbo, devadattova tena daṭṭhabbo’ti. Khamati saṅghassa, tasmā tuṇhī, evametaṃ dhārayāmī’’ti.
37那时,舍利弗尊者受僧团委派,和众多比丘一同进入王舍城,在王舍城里揭露提婆达多,说:“以前提婆达多的性情是另一种样子,现在性情变成了另一种。提婆达多现在身体和语言上所做的任何事,都不能据此看待佛、法、僧,只能据此看提婆达多本人。”在那里,那些没有信心、不净信、智慧低劣的人这样说:“这些释迦子沙门是出于嫉妒,嫉妒提婆达多得到的利养和恭敬。”而那些有信心、净信、聪明、精通、有智慧的人这样说:“这绝不会是小事,不然世尊不会让在王舍城里揭露提婆达多。”
Sammato ca āyasmā sāriputto sambahulehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṃ rājagahaṃ pavisitvā devadattaṃ rājagahe pakāsesi – ‘‘pubbe devadattassa aññā pakati ahosi, idāni aññā pakati. Yaṃ devadatto kareyya kāyena vācāya, na tena buddho vā dhammo vā saṅgho vā daṭṭhabbo, devadattova tena daṭṭhabbo’’ti. Tattha ye te manussā assaddhā appasannā dubbuddhino, te evamāhaṃsu – ‘‘usūyakā ime samaṇā sakyaputtiyā devadattassa lābhasakkāraṃ usūyantī’’ti. Ye pana te manussā saddhā pasannā paṇḍitā byattā buddhimanto, te evamāhaṃsu – ‘‘na kho idaṃ orakaṃ bhavissati yathā bhagavā devadattaṃ rājagahe pakāsāpetī’’ti.

339那时,提婆达多来到未生怨王子那里。到了之后,对未生怨王子这样说:“王子,从前的人寿命长,现在的人寿命短。这可是一种可能的情况:你在还是王子身份的时候就会死。所以,王子,你把你父亲杀了,当国王吧。我把世尊杀了,当佛陀。”
Atha kho devadatto yena ajātasattu kumāro tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā ajātasattuṃ kumāraṃ etadavoca – ‘‘pubbe kho, kumāra, manussā dīghāyukā, etarahi appāyukā. Ṭhānaṃ kho panetaṃ vijjati yaṃ tvaṃ kumārova samāno kālaṃ kareyyāsi. Tena hi tvaṃ, kumāra, pitaraṃ hantvā rājā hohi. Ahaṃ bhagavantaṃ hantvā buddho bhavissāmī’’ti.
39那时,未生怨王子心想:“尊者提婆达多是大神通、大威德的人,尊者会知道的。”他在大腿上绑了一把匕首,白天里也充满恐惧、战栗、猜疑、惊慌,急匆匆地进入了内宫。内宫里值班的大臣们看见未生怨王子白天里恐惧、战栗、猜疑、惊慌、急匆匆地进入内宫。看见后,便抓住了他。他们搜查时,发现大腿上绑着匕首,就问未生怨王子:“王子,你想做什么?”他回答:“我想杀我父亲。”又问:“是谁怂恿你的?”答:“是提婆达多尊者。”有些大臣这样认为:“王子该杀,提婆达多也该杀,所有比丘都该杀。”有些大臣这样认为:“比丘不该杀。比丘们没有任何过错。王子该杀,提婆达多也该杀。”还有一些大臣这样认为:“王子不该杀,提婆达多也不该杀,比丘们也不该杀。应当禀告国王。国王怎么说,我们就怎么办。”
Atha kho ajātasattu kumāro – ayyo kho devadatto mahiddhiko mahānubhāvo, jāneyyāsi ayyo devadattoti – ūruyā potthanikaṃ bandhitvā divā divassa bhīto ubbiggo ussaṅkī utrasto sahasā antepuraṃ pāvisi. Addasāsuṃ kho antepure upacārakā mahāmattā ajātasattuṃ kumāraṃ divā divassa bhītaṃ ubbiggaṃ ussaṅkiṃ utrastaṃ sahasā antepuraṃ pavisantaṃ; disvāna aggahesuṃ. Te vicinantā ūruyā potthanikaṃ baddhaṃ disvāna ajātasattuṃ kumāraṃ etadavocuṃ – ‘‘kiṃ tvaṃ, kumāra, kattukāmosī’’ti? ‘‘Pitaramhi hantukāmo’’ti. ‘‘Kenāsi ussāhito’’ti? ‘‘Ayyena devadattenā’’ti. Ekacce mahāmattā evaṃ matiṃ akaṃsu – ‘‘kumāro ca hantabbo, devadatto ca, sabbe ca bhikkhū hantabbā’’ti. Ekacce mahāmattā evaṃ matiṃ akaṃsu – ‘‘na bhikkhū hantabbā. Na bhikkhū kiñci aparajjhanti. Kumāro ca hantabbo, devadatto cā’’ti. Ekacce mahāmattā evaṃ matiṃ akaṃsu – ‘‘na kumāro ca hantabbo, na devadatto. Na bhikkhū hantabbā. Rañño ārocetabbaṃ. Yathā rājā vakkhati tathā karissāmā’’ti.
40那时,那些大臣把未生怨王子带到摩揭陀国斯尼亚·频婆娑罗王那里,到了之后,向摩揭陀国斯尼亚·频婆娑罗王禀告了这件事。王问:“喂,大臣们是怎么认为的?”大臣们回答:“大王,有些大臣这样认为:‘王子该杀,提婆达多也该杀,所有比丘都该杀。’有些大臣这样认为:‘比丘不该杀。比丘们没有任何过错。王子该杀,提婆达多也该杀。’还有一些大臣这样认为:‘王子不该杀,提婆达多也不该杀,比丘们也不该杀。应当禀告国王。国王怎么说,我们就怎么办。’”王说:“喂,佛、法、僧能做什么呢?世尊不是早就预先在王舍城里揭露了提婆达多吗?说:‘以前提婆达多的性情是另一种样子,现在性情变成了另一种。提婆达多现在身体和语言上所做的任何事,都不能据此看待佛、法、僧,只能据此看提婆达多本人。’”随后,那些认为“王子该杀,提婆达多也该杀,所有比丘都该杀”的大臣,王将他们免了职。那些认为“比丘不该杀,比丘们没有任何过错,王子该杀,提婆达多也该杀”的大臣,王将他们降了职。那些认为“王子不该杀,提婆达多也不该杀,比丘们也不该杀,应当禀告国王,国王怎么说就怎么办”的大臣,王将他们提升了职位。然后,摩揭陀国斯尼亚·频婆娑罗王对未生怨王子这样说:“你为什么想杀我,王子?”未生怨王子回答:“大王,我想要王位。”王说:“王子,如果你想要王位,那这王位就给你。”就把王位交给了未生怨王子。
Atha kho te mahāmattā ajātasattuṃ kumāraṃ ādāya yena rājā māgadho seniyo bimbisāro tenupasaṅkamiṃsu , upasaṅkamitvā rañño māgadhassa seniyassa bimbisārassa etamatthaṃ ārocesuṃ . ‘‘Kathaṃ, bhaṇe, mahāmattehi mati katā’’ti? ‘‘Ekacce, deva, mahāmattā evaṃ matiṃ akaṃsu – ‘kumāro ca hantabbo, devadatto ca, sabbe ca bhikkhū hantabbā’ti. Ekacce mahāmattā evaṃ matiṃ akaṃsu – ‘na bhikkhū hantabbā. Na bhikkhū kiñci aparajjhanti. Kumāro ca hantabbo, devadatto cā’ti. Ekacce mahāmattā evaṃ matiṃ akaṃsu – ‘na kumāro ca hantabbo, na devadatto. Na bhikkhū hantabbā. Rañño ārocetabbaṃ. Yathā rājā vakkhati tathā karissāmā’’’ti. ‘‘Kiṃ, bhaṇe, karissati buddho vā dhammo vā saṅgho vā? Nanu bhagavatā paṭikacceva devadatto rājagahe pakāsāpito – ‘pubbe devadattassa aññā pakati ahosi, idāni aññā pakati. Yaṃ devadatto kareyya kāyena vācāya, na tena buddho vā dhammo vā saṅgho vā daṭṭhabbo, devadattova tena daṭṭhabbo’’ti? Tattha ye te mahāmattā evaṃ matiṃ akaṃsu – ‘kumāro ca hantabbo devadatto ca; sabbe ca bhikkhū hantabbā’ti; te aṭṭhāne akāsi. Ye te mahāmattā evaṃ matiṃ akaṃsu – ‘na bhikkhū hantabbā; na bhikkhū kiñci aparajjhanti; kumāro ca hantabbo devadatto cā’ti; te nīce ṭhāne ṭhapesi. 340那时,提婆达多来到未生怨王子那里,到了之后,对未生怨王子这样说:“大王,派些人去,让他们杀掉沙门乔达摩。”未生怨王子就命令那些人:“喂,尊者提婆达多怎么说,你们就怎么办。”于是,提婆达多命令一个人:“朋友,你去,某某地方沙门乔达摩住着。杀掉他之后,从这条路回来。”他又在那条路上安排了两个人,说:“如果有一个单独的人从这条路来,就杀掉他,然后从这条路回来。”他又在那条路上安排了四个人,说:“如果有两个人从这条路来,就杀掉他们,然后从这条路回来。”他又在那条路上安排了八个人,说:“如果有四个人从这条路来,就杀掉他们,然后从这条路回来。”他又在那条路上安排了十六个人,说:“如果有八个人从这条路来,就杀掉他们,然后回来。”
Atha kho devadatto yena ajātasattu kumāro tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā ajātasattuṃ kumāraṃ etadavoca – ‘‘purise, mahārāja, āṇāpehi, ye samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ jīvitā voropessantī’’ti. Atha kho ajātasattu kumāro manusse āṇāpesi – ‘‘yathā, bhaṇe, ayyo devadatto āha tathā kareyyāthā’’ti. Atha kho devadatto ekaṃ purisaṃ āṇāpesi – ‘‘gacchāvuso, amukasmiṃ okāse samaṇo gotamo viharati. Taṃ jīvitā voropetvā iminā maggena āgacchā’’ti. Tasmiṃ magge dve purise ṭhapesi – ‘‘yo iminā maggena eko puriso āgacchati, taṃ jīvitā voropetvā iminā maggena āgacchathā’’ti. Tasmiṃ magge cattāro purise ṭhapesi – ‘‘ye iminā maggena dve purisā āgacchanti, te jīvitā voropetvā iminā maggena āgacchathā’’ti. Tasmiṃ magge aṭṭha purise ṭhapesi – ‘‘ye iminā maggena cattāro purisā āgacchanti, te jīvitā voropetvā iminā maggena āgacchathā’’ti. Tasmiṃ magge soḷasa purise ṭhapesi – ‘‘ye iminā maggena aṭṭha purisā āgacchanti, te jīvitā voropetvā āgacchathā’’ti.
42那时,那个单独的人拿了剑和盾,佩好弓箭,朝世尊那里走去。到了之后,在世尊不远处,他恐惧、战栗、猜疑、惊慌,身体僵硬地站着。世尊看见那个人恐惧、战栗、猜疑、惊慌,身体僵硬地站着,看见后,对那个人这样说:“来吧,朋友,不要害怕。”那个人便把剑和盾放到一边,放下弓箭,来到世尊那里,到了之后,头面礼世尊足,对世尊这样说:“尊者,我犯了过错,我如此愚痴、如此迷茫、如此不善,怀著恶毒的心、杀人的心来到这里。尊者的世尊,请您接受我的过错作为过错,以利于将来防护。”世尊说:“朋友,你确实犯了过错,你如此愚痴、如此迷茫、如此不善,怀著恶毒的心、杀人的心来到这里。但朋友,既然你见到过错是过错,依法改正,我们就接受它。朋友,在圣者的律中,这就是增长:一个人见到过错是过错,依法改正,在将来成就防护。”
Atha kho so eko puriso asicammaṃ gahetvā dhanukalāpaṃ sannayhitvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā bhagavato avidūre bhīto ubbiggo ussaṅkī utrasto patthaddhena kāyena aṭṭhāsi. Addasā kho bhagavā taṃ purisaṃ bhītaṃ ubbiggaṃ ussaṅkiṃ utrastaṃ patthaddhena kāyena ṭhitaṃ. Disvāna taṃ purisaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘ehāvuso, mā bhāyī’’ti. Atha kho so puriso asicammaṃ ekamantaṃ karitvā dhanukalāpaṃ nikkhipitvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā bhagavato pādesu sirasā nipatitvā bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘accayo maṃ, bhante, accagamā yathābālaṃ yathāmūḷhaṃ yathāakusalaṃ, yohaṃ duṭṭhacitto vadhakacitto idhūpasaṅkanto. Tassa me, bhante, bhagavā accayaṃ accayato paṭiggaṇhātu āyatiṃ saṃvarāyā’’ti. ‘‘Taggha tvaṃ, āvuso, accayo accagamā yathābālaṃ yathāmūḷhaṃ yathāakusalaṃ, yaṃ tvaṃ duṭṭhacitto vadhakacitto idhūpasaṅkanto. Yato ca kho tvaṃ, āvuso , accayaṃ accayato disvā yathādhammaṃ paṭikarosi, taṃ te mayaṃ paṭiggaṇhāma. Vuḍḍhi hesā, āvuso, ariyassa vinaye – yo accayaṃ accayato disvā yathādhammaṃ paṭikaroti, āyatiṃ saṃvaraṃ āpajjatī’’ti.
43那时,世尊为那个人次第开示说法,就像这样:讲说布施的法、持戒的法、生天的法;宣说感官欲乐的过患、卑劣、污秽,以及出离的功德。当世尊知道他的心已经成熟、柔和、没有障碍、踊跃、净信时,便开示诸佛最为殊胜的教法:苦、集、灭、道。就像一块洁净的布,没有黑色的污渍,会完全吸收染料一样。就在那座位上,那个人内心生起了远离尘垢、没有瑕疵的法眼:凡是任何集起的法,这一切都是息灭的法。那时,那个人已经见到法、证得法、了解了法、深入了法,超越了疑惑,离开了犹豫,得到了无所畏惧,在师的教法中不再依赖他人。他对世尊这样说:“太殊胜了,尊者!太殊胜了,尊者!就像尊者把倾倒的东西扶正过来,把覆盖的东西揭开,给迷路的人指出道路,在黑暗中持来油灯——让有眼睛的人可以看到颜色。同样地,世尊用种种方式阐明了法。尊者,我归依世尊、归依法、归依比丘僧团。请世尊记得我是优婆塞,从今天开始,尽形寿归依。”然后,世尊对那个人这样说:“朋友,你不要走这条路,你走那条路吧。”便让他从另一条路离开了。
Atha kho bhagavā tassa purisassa anupubbiṃ kathaṃ kathesi, seyyathidaṃ – dānakathaṃ sīlakathaṃ saggakathaṃ, kāmānaṃ ādīnavaṃ okāraṃ saṃkilesaṃ, nekkhamme ānisaṃsaṃ pakāsesi. Yadā taṃ bhagavā aññāsi kallacittaṃ, muducittaṃ, vinīvaraṇacittaṃ, udaggacittaṃ, pasannacittaṃ, atha yā buddhānaṃ sāmukkaṃsikā dhammadesanā taṃ pakāsesi – dukkhaṃ, samudayaṃ, nirodhaṃ, maggaṃ. Seyyathāpi nāma suddhaṃ vatthaṃ apagatakāḷakaṃ sammadeva rajanaṃ paṭiggaheyya, evameva tassa purisassa tasmiṃyeva āsane virajaṃ vītamalaṃ dhammacakkhuṃ udapādi – yaṃ kiñci samudayadhammaṃ, sabbaṃ taṃ nirodhadhammanti. Atha kho so puriso diṭṭhadhammo pattadhammo viditadhammo pariyogāḷhadhammo tiṇṇavicikiccho vigatakathaṃkatho vesārajjappatto aparappaccayo satthusāsane bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘abhikkantaṃ, bhante, abhikkantaṃ, bhante. Seyyathāpi, bhante, nikkujjitaṃ vā ukkujjeyya, paṭicchannaṃ vā vivareyya, mūḷhassa vā maggaṃ ācikkheyya, andhakāre vā telapajjotaṃ dhāreyya – cakkhumanto rūpāni dakkhantīti – evamevaṃ bhagavatā anekapariyāyena dhammo pakāsito. Esāhaṃ, bhante, bhagavantaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi, dhammañca, bhikkhusaṅghañca. Upāsakaṃ maṃ bhagavā dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṃ saraṇaṃ gata’’nti. Atha kho bhagavā taṃ purisaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘mā kho tvaṃ, āvuso, iminā maggena gaccha, iminā maggena gacchāhī’’ti aññena maggena uyyojesi.

Disvāna yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu, upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu. Tesaṃ bhagavā anupubbiṃ kathaṃ kathesi…pe… aparappaccayā satthusāsane bhagavantaṃ etadavocuṃ – ‘‘abhikkantaṃ, bhante…pe… upāsake no bhagavā dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṃ saraṇaṃ gate’’ti. Atha kho bhagavā te purise etadavoca – ‘‘mā kho tumhe, āvuso, iminā maggena gacchittha, iminā maggena gacchathā’’ti aññena maggena uyyojesi.
45那时,先是那四个人……接着又是那八个人……再接着是那十六个人——他们心想:那八个人怎么这么久还没回来?于是他们便迎面而去,看见世尊正坐在一棵树下。看到后,他们便朝世尊那边走去,走到近处,向世尊行礼,然后坐在一边。世尊依次为他们开示,也就是:布施的开示……他们不再依赖他人,在导师的教法中,他们对世尊这样说:'太殊胜了,尊者!……请世尊把我们记作从今日起终生归依的在家弟子吧。'那时,世尊对他们说:'诸位贤友,你们不要走这条路,要走那条路。'便安排他们从另一条路离开了。

46那时,那一个人就去到提婆达多那里,到了以后,对提婆达多这样说:'尊者,我没办法夺取那位世尊的性命;那位世尊有大神通,大威力。'提婆达多说:'够了,贤友,你不用去夺取沙门乔达摩的性命了。我自己来夺取沙门乔达摩的性命。'
Atha kho so eko puriso yena devadatto tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā devadattaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘nāhaṃ, bhante, sakkomi taṃ bhagavantaṃ jīvitā voropetuṃ; mahiddhiko so bhagavā, mahānubhāvo’’ti. ‘‘Alaṃ, āvuso; mā tvaṃ samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ jīvitā voropesi. Ahameva samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ jīvitā voropessāmī’’ti.

341就在那时,世尊正在鹫峰山的山影下经行。于是提婆达多登上鹫峰山,推下一块大石头,心想:'我要用这个夺取沙门乔达摩的性命。'两块山岩相合,将那块石头夹住了。但从那里飞溅出的碎石击中了世尊的脚,流出了血。那时,世尊向上看,对提婆达多这样说:'你这个愚蠢的人啊,你造下了很多非福德,就因为你怀恶心、怀害心,让如来的血流出。'那时,世尊对比丘们说:'比丘们,这就是提婆达多所积累的第一个无间业,因为他怀恶心、怀害心,让如来的血流出。'
Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā gijjhakūṭassa pabbatassa chāyāyaṃ caṅkamati. Atha kho devadatto gijjhakūṭaṃ pabbataṃ āruhitvā mahatiṃ silaṃ pavijjhi – imāya samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ jīvitā voropessāmīti. Dve pabbatakūṭā samāgantvā taṃ silaṃ sampaṭicchiṃsu. Tato papatikā uppatitvā bhagavato pāde ruhiraṃ uppādesi. Atha kho bhagavā uddhaṃ ulloketvā devadattaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘bahuṃ tayā, moghapurisa, apuññaṃ pasutaṃ, yaṃ tvaṃ duṭṭhacitto vadhakacitto tathāgatassa ruhiraṃ uppādesī’’ti. Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi – ‘‘idaṃ, bhikkhave, devadattena paṭhamaṃ ānantariyaṃ kammaṃ upacitaṃ, yaṃ duṭṭhacittena vadhakacittena tathāgatassa ruhiraṃ uppādita’’nti.
48比丘们听说:'听说提婆达多对世尊实施了杀害。'那些比丘们就在世尊住所的周围四处经行,高声大气地诵经,为了守护、防卫、保护世尊。世尊听到了那高声、那大气、那诵经的声音。听到后,世尊对具寿阿难说:'阿难,那是什么高声、大气、诵经的声音?''尊者,比丘们听说:听说提婆达多对世尊实施了杀害。那些比丘们就在世尊住所的周围四处经行,高声大气地诵经,为了守护、防卫、保护世尊。尊者,那就是那高声、大气、诵经的声音。''那么,阿难,你用我的话去招呼那些比丘们:导师召唤诸位贤友。''是的,尊者。'具寿阿难应允世尊后,就朝那些比丘那边走去,到了以后,对那些比丘说:'导师召唤诸位贤友。''好的,贤友。'那些比丘们应允具寿阿难后,就到世尊那边去,到了以后,向世尊行礼,然后坐在一边。坐在一边后,世尊对那些比丘这样说:
Assosuṃ kho bhikkhū – ‘‘devadattena kira bhagavato vadho payutto’’ti. Te ca bhikkhū bhagavato vihārassa parito parito caṅkamanti uccāsaddā mahāsaddā sajjhāyaṃ karontā, bhagavato rakkhāvaraṇaguttiyā. Assosi kho bhagavā uccāsaddaṃ mahāsaddaṃ sajjhāyasaddaṃ. Sutvāna āyasmantaṃ ānandaṃ āmantesi – ‘‘kiṃ nu kho so, ānanda, uccāsaddo mahāsaddo sajjhāyasaddo’’ti? ‘‘Assosuṃ kho, bhante, bhikkhū – ‘devadattena kira bhagavato vadho payutto’ti. Te ca , bhante, bhikkhū bhagavato vihārassa parito parito caṅkamanti uccāsaddā mahāsaddā sajjhāyaṃ karontā, bhagavato rakkhāvaraṇaguttiyā. So eso, bhagavā, uccāsaddo mahāsaddo sajjhāyasaddo’’ti. ‘‘Tena hānanda, mama vacanena te bhikkhū āmantehi – satthā āyasmante āmantetī’’ti. ‘‘Evaṃ bhante’’ti kho āyasmā ānando bhagavato paṭissutvā yena te bhikkhū tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā te bhikkhū etadavoca – ‘‘satthā āyasmante āmantetī’’ti. ‘‘Evamāvuso’’ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato ānandassa paṭissutvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu, upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu. Ekamantaṃ nisinne kho te bhikkhū bhagavā etadavoca –
49'比丘们,这是没有道理的,也是不可能的,一个人可以通过他人的谋害夺去如来的性命。比丘们,如来们是在没有谋害的情况下般涅槃的。
‘‘Aṭṭhānametaṃ , bhikkhave, anavakāso, yaṃ parūpakkamena tathāgataṃ jīvitā voropeyya. Anupakkamena, bhikkhave, tathāgatā parinibbāyanti.
50'比丘们,这世间存在着这五种导师。是哪五种呢?比丘们,在此,有某种导师,自己戒行不清净,却声称“我是戒行清净的”,并且认为“我的戒行是清净的、洁白的、没有污染的”。他的弟子们却这样知道:“这位尊贵的导师,自己戒行不清净,却声称‘我是戒行清净的’,并且认为‘我的戒行是清净的、洁白的、没有污染的’。如果我们去向在家人说,这不会让他高兴。而对于令他不高兴的事,我们又怎么能用那种方式对待他呢?况且他受到衣服、钵食、住所、生病所需的药品资具的恭敬供养——他自己怎么做的,就会因那个而显露出来。”比丘们,弟子们是从戒的方面来保护这样的导师,而这样的导师也期望弟子们从戒的方面来保护他。

Katame pañca? ‘‘Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco satthā aparisuddhasīlo samāno ‘parisuddhasīlomhī’ti paṭijānāti ‘parisuddhaṃ me sīlaṃ pariyodātaṃ asaṃkiliṭṭha’nti ca. Tamenaṃ sāvakā evaṃ jānanti – ‘ayaṃ kho bhavaṃ satthā aparisuddhasīlo samāno ‘parisuddhasīlomhī’ti paṭijānāti ‘parisuddhaṃ me sīlaṃ pariyodātaṃ asaṃkiliṭṭha’nti ca. Mayañceva kho pana gihīnaṃ āroceyyāma, nāssassa manāpaṃ. Yaṃ kho panassa amanāpaṃ, kathaṃ naṃ mayaṃ tena samudācareyyāma? Sammannati kho pana cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārena – yaṃ tumo karissati, tumova tena paññāyissatī’ti . Evarūpaṃ kho, bhikkhave, satthāraṃ sāvakā sīlato rakkhanti; evarūpo ca pana satthā sāvakehi sīlato rakkhaṃ paccāsīsati.
51'再者,比丘们,在此,有某种导师,自己活命不清净……说法不清净……记说(问答)不清净……智见不清净,却声称“我是智见清净的”,并且认为“我的智见是清净的、洁白的、没有污染的”。他的弟子们却这样知道:“这位尊贵的导师,自己智见不清净,却声称‘我是智见清净的’,并且认为‘我的智见是清净的、洁白的、没有污染的’。如果我们去向在家人说,这不会让他高兴。而对于令他不高兴的事,我们又怎么能用那种方式对待他呢?况且他受到衣服、钵食、住所、生病所需的药品资具的恭敬供养——他自己怎么做的,就会因那个而显露出来。”比丘们,弟子们是从智见的方面来保护这样的导师,而这样的导师也期望弟子们从智见的方面来保护他。比丘们,这世间存在着这五种导师。而比丘们,我自己是戒行清净的,我如实地声称“我是戒行清净的”,并且如实地了知“我的戒行是清净的、洁白的、没有污染的”。但弟子们并不从戒的方面来保护我,我也不期望弟子们从戒的方面来保护我。比丘们,我自己是活命清净的……说法清净的……记说清净的……智见清净的,我如实地声称“我是智见清净的”,并且如实地了知“我的智见是清净的、洁白的、没有污染的”。但弟子们并不从智见的方面来保护我,我也不期望弟子们从智见的方面来保护我。比丘们,这是没有道理的,也是不可能的,一个人可以通过他人的谋害夺去如来的性命。比丘们,如来们是在没有谋害的情况下般涅槃的。你们各自回到你们的住处去吧,比丘们。如来们是不需要被保护的。'

Tamenaṃ sāvakā evaṃ jānanti – ‘ayaṃ kho bhavaṃ satthā aparisuddhañāṇadassano samāno ‘parisuddhañāṇadassanomhī’ti paṭijānāti ‘parisuddhaṃ me ñāṇadassanaṃ pariyodātaṃ asaṃkiliṭṭha’nti ca. Mayañceva kho pana gihīnaṃ āroceyyāma, nāssassa manāpaṃ. Yaṃ kho panassa amanāpaṃ, kathaṃ na mayaṃ tena samudācareyyāma? Sammannati kho pana cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārena – yaṃ tumo karissati, tumova tena paññāyissatī’ti. Evarūpaṃ kho, bhikkhave, satthāraṃ sāvakā ñāṇadassanato rakkhanti; evarūpo ca pana satthā sāvakehi ñāṇadassanato rakkhaṃ paccāsīsati. Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca satthāro santo saṃvijjamānā lokasmiṃ. ‘‘Ahaṃ kho pana, bhikkhave, parisuddhasīlo samāno ‘parisuddhasīlomhī’ti paṭijānāmi ‘parisuddhaṃ me sīlaṃ pariyodātaṃ asaṃkiliṭṭha’nti ca. Na ca maṃ sāvakā sīlato rakkhanti; na cāhaṃ sāvakehi sīlato rakkhaṃ paccāsīsāmi. 66遣那罗祇梨象
Nāḷāgiripesanaṃ
342就在那时,在王舍城,有一头名叫那罗祇梨的大象,凶猛好杀,是一个杀人者。于是,提婆达多进入王舍城,到了象厩,对象师们这样说:'喂,你们要知道,我们这些王亲国戚是有能力把地位低的人提拔到高位,也能增加配给和薪俸的。所以,喂,当沙门乔达摩走到这条街上时,你们就放出这头那罗祇梨象,把它赶到这条街上去。''是的,尊者。'那些象师们这样答应了提婆达多。那时,世尊在上午,穿好下衣,拿着钵和衣,和众多比丘一起进入王舍城托钵乞食。当世尊走到那条街上时,那些象师看见了世尊正走在街上。看见后,便放出了那罗祇梨象,把它赶到了那条街上。那罗祇梨象远远地就看见世尊走来。看见之后,它竖起鼻子,耳朵和尾巴挺起来,朝世尊冲了过去。那些比丘远远地看见那罗祇梨象跑来。看见后,便对世尊这样说:'尊者,那头那罗祇梨象,凶猛好杀,是一个杀人者,正跑到这条街上来了。世尊,请退后吧;善至,请退后吧。''来吧,比丘们,不要害怕。比丘们,这是没有道理的,也是不可能的,一个人可以通过他人的谋害夺去如来的性命。比丘们,如来们是在没有谋害的情况下般涅槃的。'第二次,那些比丘……第三次,那些比丘对世尊这样说:'尊者,那头那罗祇梨象,凶猛好杀,是一个杀人者,正跑到这条街上来了。世尊,请退后吧;善至,请退后吧。''来吧,比丘们,不要害怕。比丘们,这是没有道理的,也是不可能的,一个人可以通过他人的谋害夺去如来的性命。比丘们,如来们是在没有谋害的情况下般涅槃的。'
Tena kho pana samayena rājagahe nāḷāgiri nāma hatthī caṇḍo hoti, manussaghātako. Atha kho devadatto rājagahaṃ pavisitvā hatthisālaṃ gantvā hatthibhaṇḍe etadavoca – ‘‘mayaṃ kho, bhaṇe, rājañātakā nāma paṭibalā nīcaṭṭhāniyaṃ uccaṭṭhāne ṭhapetuṃ, bhattampi vetanampi vaḍḍhāpetuṃ. Tena hi, bhaṇe, yadā samaṇo gotamo imaṃ racchaṃ paṭipanno hoti, tadā imaṃ nāḷāgiriṃ hatthiṃ muñcetvā imaṃ racchaṃ paṭipādethā’’ti. ‘‘Evaṃ bhante’’ti kho te hatthibhaṇḍā devadattassa paccassosuṃ. Atha kho bhagavā pubbaṇhasamayaṃ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya sambahulehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṃ rājagahaṃ piṇḍāya pāvisi. Atha kho bhagavā taṃ racchaṃ paṭipajji. Addasāsuṃ kho te hatthibhaṇḍā bhagavantaṃ taṃ racchaṃ paṭipannaṃ. Disvāna nāḷāgiriṃ hatthiṃ muñcitvā taṃ racchaṃ paṭipādesuṃ. Addasā kho nāḷāgiri hatthī bhagavantaṃ dūratova āgacchantaṃ. Disvāna soṇḍaṃ ussāpetvā pahaṭṭhakaṇṇavālo yena bhagavā tena abhidhāvi. Addasāsuṃ kho te bhikkhū nāḷāgiriṃ hatthiṃ dūratova āgacchantaṃ. Disvāna bhagavantaṃ etadavocuṃ – ‘‘ayaṃ, bhante, nāḷāgiri hatthī caṇḍo manussaghātako imaṃ racchaṃ paṭipanno. Paṭikkamatu, bhante, bhagavā; paṭikkamatu sugato’’ti. ‘‘Āgacchatha, bhikkhave, mā bhāyittha. Aṭṭhānametaṃ, bhikkhave, anavakāso, yaṃ parūpakkamena tathāgataṃ jīvitā voropeyya. Anupakkamena, bhikkhave, tathāgatā parinibbāyantī’’ti. Dutiyampi kho te bhikkhū…pe… tatiyampi kho te bhikkhū bhagavantaṃ etadavocuṃ – ‘‘ayaṃ, bhante, nāḷāgiri hatthī caṇḍo manussaghātako imaṃ racchaṃ paṭipanno. Paṭikkamatu, bhante, bhagavā; paṭikkamatu sugato’’ti. ‘‘Āgacchatha, bhikkhave, mā bhāyittha. Aṭṭhānametaṃ , bhikkhave, anavakāso, yaṃ parūpakkamena tathāgataṃ jīvitā voropeyya. Anupakkamena, bhikkhave, tathāgatā parinibbāyantī’’ti.
53那时,人们纷纷登上高楼,攀到塔殿和屋顶上站着看。在场那些不信、不敬、心怀邪见的人这样说:“唉,诸位,那相貌庄严的大沙门,这下可要被大象伤害了!”而那些有信心、有敬意、聪明、干练、有智慧的人则这样说:“诸位,不用多久,象就要和象交战了!”于是世尊对那罗祇梨象遍满慈心。当时,那罗祇梨象被世尊的慈心触及后,把长鼻垂了下来,朝世尊所站之处走去;走近之后,便停在了世尊面前。世尊用右手抚摸着那罗祇梨象的额顶,以这几首偈颂对那罗祇梨象说道:
Tena kho pana samayena manussā pāsādesupi hammiyesupi chadanesupi āruḷhā acchanti. Tattha ye te manussā assaddhā appasannā dubbuddhino, te evamāhaṃsu – ‘‘abhirūpo vata, bho , mahāsamaṇo nāgena viheṭhīyissatī’’ti. Ye pana te manussā saddhā pasannā paṇḍitā byattā buddhimanto, te evamāhaṃsu – ‘‘nacirassaṃ vata, bho, nāgo nāgena saṅgāmessatī’’ti. Atha kho bhagavā nāḷāgiriṃ hatthiṃ mettena cittena phari. Atha kho nāḷāgiri hatthī bhagavato mettena cittena phuṭṭho soṇḍaṃ oropetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā bhagavato purato aṭṭhāsi. Atha kho bhagavā dakkhiṇena hatthena nāḷāgirissa hatthissa kumbhaṃ parāmasanto nāḷāgiriṃ hatthiṃ imāhi gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi –
69“大象啊,不要冲撞大象,大象啊,冲撞大象真是苦事;
‘‘Mā kuñjara nāgamāsado, dukkhañhi kuñjara nāgamāsado;
70因为,大象,攻击大象者,从此以后,没有善趣的去处。
Na hi nāgahatassa kuñjara sugati, hoti ito paraṃ yato.
71不要骄慢,也不要放逸;放逸之人,是走不到善趣的;
‘‘Mā ca mado mā ca pamādo, na hi pamattā sugatiṃ vajanti te;
72你要做的就是如此行去,那样你将走到善趣。”
Tvaññeva tathā karissasi, yena tvaṃ sugatiṃ gamissasī’’ti.
54那时,那罗祇梨象用长鼻卷取世尊脚上的尘土,撒在自己的头顶上,然后一边后退一边往下退,直到还能看见世尊的地方。随后,那罗祇梨象走回象棚,在自己的位置站好。就这样,那罗祇梨象成了一条被调伏的象。就在那个时候,人们唱起了这首偈颂:
Atha kho nāḷāgiri hatthī soṇḍāya bhagavato pādapaṃsūni gahetvā uparimuddhani ākiritvā paṭikuṭiyova osakki, yāva bhagavantaṃ addakkhi. Atha kho nāḷāgiri hatthī hatthisālaṃ gantvā sake ṭhāne aṭṭhāsi. Tathā danto ca pana nāḷāgiri hatthī ahosi. Tena kho pana samayena manussā imaṃ gāthaṃ gāyanti –
74“有些人用棍棒、钩子和鞭子来调伏;
‘‘Daṇḍeneke damayanti, aṅkusehi kasāhi ca;
75而大仙人不用棍棒,不用刀杖,就调伏了这头大象。”
Adaṇḍena asatthena, nāgo danto mahesinā’’ti.
55民众们指责、批评、非难道:'这个提婆达多真是邪恶,真是不幸,他竟然想去加害有这样大神通、这样大威力的沙门乔达摩!' 提婆达多的利养和恭敬减损了,而世尊的利养和恭敬却增长了。
Manussā ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti – ‘‘yāva pāpo ayaṃ devadatto, alakkhiko, yatra hi nāma samaṇassa gotamassa evaṃmahiddhikassa evaṃ mahānubhāvassa vadhāya parakkamissatī’’ti. Devadattassa lābhasakkāro parihāyi. Bhagavato ca lābhasakkāro abhivaḍḍhi.

Pañcavatthuyācanakathā
343那时,因为利养和恭敬减损,提婆达多带着他的徒众,在信众家里反复乞求之后才吃饭。民众们指责、批评、非难道:'这些释迦子的修行人,怎么能在信众家里反复乞求之后才吃饭呢?谁的丰盛食物不讨人喜欢,谁的美味不让人满意呢?' 一些比丘们听到了那些民众的指责、批评和非难。那些少欲知足的比丘们……也指责、批评、非难道:'提婆达多怎么可以带着他的徒众,在信众家里反复乞求之后才吃饭呢!' 他们将此事禀告了世尊…… 世尊问道:'提婆达多,听说你带着徒众在信众家里反复乞求之后才吃饭,这是真的吗?' '是真的,世尊。' ……在呵责之后……在做了开示佛法后,世尊对比丘们说道:'那么,比丘们,我现在为比丘们制定关于在自己的族亲中用餐的学处,这是基于三个目的:为了折服品行不端的人;为了让戒行端正的比丘们能安稳地住下来;为了防止那些有恶欲的人结党分裂僧团;同时也是出于对族亲们的怜悯。对于团体食,应按这如法的方式做。'
Tena kho pana samayena devadatto parihīnalābhasakkāro sapariso kulesu viññāpetvā viññāpetvā bhuñjati. Manussā ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti – ‘‘kathañhi nāma samaṇā sakyaputtiyā kulesu viññāpetvā viññāpetvā bhuñjissanti! Kassa sampannaṃ na manāpaṃ, kassa sāduṃ na ruccatī’’ti! Assosuṃ kho bhikkhū tesaṃ manussānaṃ ujjhāyantānaṃ khiyyantānaṃ vipācentānaṃ. Ye te bhikkhū appicchā…pe… te ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti – kathañhi nāma devadatto sapariso kulesu viññāpetvā viññāpetvā bhuñjissatī’’ti! Bhagavato etamatthaṃ ārocesuṃ…pe… ‘‘saccaṃ kira tvaṃ, devadatta, sapariso kulesu viññāpetvā viññāpetvā bhuñjasī’’ti? ‘‘Saccaṃ bhagavā’’ti…pe… vigarahitvā…pe… dhammiṃ kathaṃ katvā bhikkhū āmantesi – ‘‘tena hi, bhikkhave, bhikkhūnaṃ kulesu tikabhojanaṃ paññapessāmi tayo atthavase paṭicca – dummaṅkūnaṃ puggalāna niggahāya ; pesalānaṃ bhikkhūnaṃ phāsuvihārāya, mā pāpicchā pakkhaṃ nissāya saṅghaṃ bhindeyyunti; kulānuddayāya ca. Gaṇabhojane yathādhammo kāretabbo’’ti.
57那时,提婆达多找到了拘迦利伽、迦多末达咖帝沙伽、山牒维耶之子萨姆达达多。到了之后,提婆达多对拘迦利伽、迦多末达咖帝沙伽、山牒维耶之子萨姆达达多这样说:'来吧,朋友们,我们来分裂沙门乔达摩的僧团,破坏他的法轮!' 听到这话,拘迦利伽对提婆达多说:'朋友,沙门乔达摩有大神通、大威力,我们怎么能分裂沙门乔达摩的僧团,破坏他的法轮呢?' 提婆达多说:'来吧,朋友们,我们去找沙门乔达摩乞求五件事:'世尊,尊者,您常以各种方式赞美少欲、知足、减损、头陀、庄严、离贪、精进勤修的人。尊者,这里有五件事,会以各种方式导向少欲、导向知足、导向减损、导向头陀、导向庄严、导向离贪、导向精进勤修。尊者啊,愿比丘们终身做住森林者;若是有人接近村落住,就让他犯过错。终身做乞食者;若是有人接受邀请受供,就让他犯过错。终身做穿粪扫衣者;若是有人接受居士施衣,就让他犯过错。终身做树下住者;若是有人住到有覆盖遮蔽的地方,就让他犯过错。终身不吃鱼肉;若是有人吃鱼肉,就让他犯过错。' 沙门乔达摩不会答应这五件事。我们就能用这五件事去说服大众。' 拘迦利伽说:'朋友,用这五件事,确实能够分裂沙门乔达摩的僧团,破坏他的法轮。因为,朋友,人们是信崇外表粗砺刻苦之行的。'
Atha kho devadatto yena kokāliko kaṭamodakatissako khaṇḍadeviyā putto samuddadatto tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā kokālikaṃ kaṭamodakatissakaṃ khaṇḍadeviyā puttaṃ samuddadattaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘etha, mayaṃ, āvuso, samaṇassa gotamassa saṅghabhedaṃ karissāma cakkabheda’’nti. Evaṃ vutte kokāliko devadattaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘samaṇo kho, āvuso, gotamo mahiddhiko mahānubhāvo. Kathaṃ mayaṃ samaṇassa gotamassa saṅghabhedaṃ karissāma cakkabheda’’nti? ‘‘Etha, mayaṃ, āvuso, samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ upasaṅkamitvā pañca vatthūni yācissāma – ‘bhagavā, bhante, anekapariyāyena appicchassa santuṭṭhassa sallekhassa dhutassa pāsādikassa apacayassa vīriyārambhassa vaṇṇavādī. Imāni, bhante, pañca vatthūni anekapariyāyena appicchatāya santuṭṭhiyā sallekhāya dhutatāya pāsādikatāya apacayāya vīriyārambhāya saṃvattanti. Sādhu, bhante, bhikkhū yāvajīvaṃ āraññikā assu; yo gāmantaṃ osareyya, vajjaṃ naṃ phuseyya. Yāvajīvaṃ piṇḍapātikā assu; yo nimantanaṃ sādiyeyya, vajjaṃ naṃ phuseyya. Yāvajīvaṃ paṃsukūlikā assu; yo gahapaticīvaraṃ sādiyeyya, vajjaṃ naṃ phuseyya. Yāvajīvaṃ rukkhamūlikā assu; yo channaṃ upagaccheyya, vajjaṃ naṃ phuseyya. Yāvajīvaṃ macchamaṃsaṃ na khādeyyuṃ; yo macchamaṃsaṃ khādeyya, vajjaṃ naṃ phuseyyā’ti. Imāni pañca vatthūni samaṇo gotamo nānujānissati. Te mayaṃ imehi pañcahi vatthūhi janaṃ saññāpessāmā’’ti. ‘‘Sakkā kho, āvuso, imehi pañcahi vatthūhi samaṇassa gotamassa saṅghabhedo kātuṃ cakkabhedo. Lūkhappasannā hi, āvuso, manussā’’ti.
58那时,提婆达多带着他的徒众,前往世尊所在之处。到了以后,向世尊行礼,然后坐在一边。坐在一边的提婆达多对世尊这样说:'世尊,尊者,您常以各种方式赞美少欲、知足、减损、头陀、庄严、离贪、精进勤修的人。尊者,这里有五件事,会以各种方式导向少欲、导向知足、导向减损、导向头陀、导向庄严、导向离贪、导向精进勤修。尊者啊,愿比丘们终身做住森林者;若是有人接近村落住,就让他犯过错。终身做乞食者;若是有人接受邀请受供,就让他犯过错。终身做穿粪扫衣者;若是有人接受居士施衣,就让他犯过错。终身做树下住者;若是有人住到有覆盖遮蔽的地方,就让他犯过错。终身不吃鱼肉;若是有人吃鱼肉,就让他犯过错。' 世尊回答:'够了,提婆达多。愿做住森林者,就做住森林者;愿在村落附近住的人,就住在村落附近吧。愿做乞食者,就做乞食者;愿接受邀请受供,就接受邀请受供吧。愿做穿粪扫衣者,就做穿粪扫衣者;愿接受居士施衣,就接受居士施衣吧。提婆达多,我已经允许了八个月在树下坐卧居住;至于鱼肉,若是三处清净的——不见杀、不闻杀、不疑为自己而杀,是可以的。' 那时,提婆达多想:'世尊没有答应这五件事。' 他内心高兴,精神振奋,和徒众一起从座位上起身,向世尊行礼,右绕之后便离开了。
Atha kho devadatto sapariso yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho devadatto bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘bhagavā, bhante, anekapariyāyena appicchassa santuṭṭhassa sallekhassa dhutassa pāsādikassa apacayassa vīriyārambhassa vaṇṇavādī. Imāni, bhante, pañca vatthūni anekapariyāyena appicchatāya santuṭṭhiyā sallekhāya dhutatāya pāsādikatāya apacayāya vīriyārambhāya saṃvattanti. Sādhu, bhante, bhikkhū yāvajīvaṃ āraññikā assu; yo gāmantaṃ osareyya, vajjaṃ naṃ phuseyya. Yāvajīvaṃ piṇḍapātikā assu; yo nimantanaṃ sādiyeyya, vajjaṃ naṃ phuseyya. Yāvajīvaṃ paṃsukūlikā assu; yo gahapaticīvaraṃ sādiyeyya, vajjaṃ naṃ phuseyya. Yāvajīvaṃ rukkhamūlikā assu; yo channaṃ upagaccheyya, vajjaṃ naṃ phuseyya. Yāvajīvaṃ macchamaṃsaṃ na khādeyyuṃ; yo macchamaṃsaṃ khādeyya, vajjaṃ naṃ phuseyyā’’ti. ‘‘Alaṃ, devadatta. Yo icchati, āraññiko hotu; yo icchati, gāmante viharatu. Yo icchati, piṇḍapātiko hotu; yo icchati, nimantanaṃ sādiyatu. Yo icchati, paṃsukūliko hotu; yo icchati, gahapaticīvaraṃ sādiyatu. Aṭṭhamāse kho mayā, devadatta, rukkhamūlasenāsanaṃ anuññātaṃ; tikoṭiparisuddhaṃ macchamaṃsaṃ – adiṭṭhaṃ, assutaṃ, aparisaṅkita’’nti. Atha kho devadatto – na bhagavā imāni pañca vatthūni anujānātīti – haṭṭho udaggo sapariso uṭṭhāyāsanā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṃ katvā pakkāmi.
59那时,提婆达多和他的徒众进入了王舍城,用那五件事去说服大众:'朋友们,我们去找沙门乔达摩乞求五件事:世尊,尊者,您常以各种方式赞美少欲……乃至精进勤修……尊者,这里有五件事……导向精进勤修。' 他们说道:'尊者,愿比丘们终身做住森林者……乃至……终身不吃鱼肉;若是有人吃鱼肉,就让他犯过错。这五件事,沙门乔达摩不答应。我们却接受并奉行这五件事。'
Atha kho devadatto sapariso rājagahaṃ pavisitvā pañcahi vatthūhi janaṃ saññāpesi – ‘‘mayaṃ, āvuso, samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ upasaṅkamitvā pañca vatthūni yācimhā – ‘bhagavā, bhante, anekapariyāyena appicchassa…pe… vīriyārambhassa vaṇṇavādī. Imāni, bhante, pañca vatthūni anekapariyāyena appicchatāya…pe… vīriyārambhāya saṃvattanti. Sādhu, bhante, bhikkhū yāvajīvaṃ āraññikā assu; yo gāmantaṃ osareyya, vajjaṃ naṃ phuseyya…pe… yāvajīvaṃ macchamaṃsaṃ na khādeyyuṃ; yo macchamaṃsaṃ khādeyya, vajjaṃ naṃ phuseyyā’ti. Imāni pañca vatthūni samaṇo gotamo nānujānāti. Te mayaṃ imehi pañcahi vatthūhi samādāya vattāmā’’ti.
60在那里,那些不信佛、没有净信、智慧低劣的人这样说:'这些释迦子比丘们,确实是修头陀行、持减损行的人。而沙门乔达摩,却是生活宽裕、喜欢舒适的人。' 然而,那些有信、有净信、聪明、通达、有智慧的人,他们指责、批评、非难说:'这个提婆达多,怎么会企图分裂世尊的僧团,破坏法轮呢!' 一些比丘们听到了那些民众的指责、批评和非难。那些少欲知足的比丘们……也指责、批评、非难道:'提婆达多怎么会企图分裂僧团,破坏法轮呢!' 那些比丘们将此事禀告了世尊…… 世尊问道:'提婆达多,听说你在企图分裂僧团,破坏法轮,这是真的吗?' '是真的,世尊。' 世尊说:'够了,提婆达多。你不要喜好分裂僧团。提婆达多,分裂僧团是极重的罪过。提婆达多,任何分裂和合僧团的人,都会造下持续一劫的罪业,会在地狱中煎熬一劫。而提婆达多,任何让分裂的僧团重归和合的人,能造下无量的功德,会在天上享受快乐一劫。够了,提婆达多。你不要喜好分裂僧团。提婆达多,分裂僧团确实是极重的罪过。'
Tattha ye te manussā assaddhā appasannā dubbuddhino, te evamāhaṃsu – ‘‘ime kho samaṇā sakyaputtiyā dhutā sallekhavuttino. Samaṇo pana gotamo bāhulliko bāhullāya cetetī’’ti. Ye pana te manussā saddhā pasannā paṇḍitā byattā buddhimanto, te ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti – ‘‘kathañhi nāma devadatto bhagavato saṅghabhedāya parakkamissati cakkabhedāyā’’ti! Assosuṃ kho bhikkhū tesaṃ manussānaṃ ujjhāyantānaṃ khiyyantānaṃ vipācentānaṃ. Ye te bhikkhū appicchā…pe… te ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti – ‘‘kathañhi nāma devadatto saṅghabhedāya parakkamissati cakkabhedāyā’’ti! Atha kho te bhikkhū bhagavato etamatthaṃ ārocesuṃ…pe… ‘‘saccaṃ kira tvaṃ, devadatta, saṅghabhedāya parakkamasi cakkabhedāyā’’ti? ‘‘Saccaṃ bhagavā’’ti. ‘‘Alaṃ, devadatta. Mā te rucci saṅghabhedo. Garuko kho, devadatta, saṅghabhedo. Yo kho, devadatta, samaggaṃ saṅghaṃ bhindati, kappaṭṭhikaṃ kibbisaṃ pasavati, kappaṃ nirayamhi paccati. Yo ca kho, devadatta, bhinnaṃ saṅghaṃ samaggaṃ karoti, brahmaṃ puññaṃ pasavati, kappaṃ saggamhi modati. Alaṃ, devadatta. Mā te rucci saṅghabhedo. Garuko kho, devadatta, saṅghabhedo’’ti.
61那时,阿难尊者在午前时分,穿好下衣,拿着钵和上衣,进入王舍城去乞食。提婆达多看到阿难尊者在王舍城中走着乞食。看见之后,提婆达多便走近阿难尊者,到了之后,对阿难尊者这样说:'从今天起,我,朋友阿难,将离开世尊,离开比丘僧团,独自举行布萨,独自做僧团羯磨。'
Atha kho āyasmā ānando pubbaṇhasamayaṃ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya rājagahaṃ piṇḍāya pāvisi. Addasā kho devadatto āyasmantaṃ ānandaṃ rājagahe piṇḍāya carantaṃ. Disvāna yenāyasmā ānando tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ ānandaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘ajjataggedānāhaṃ , āvuso ānanda, aññatreva bhagavatā, aññatreva bhikkhusaṅghā, uposathaṃ karissāmi saṅghakammaṃ karissāmī’’ti.
62那时,阿难尊者在王舍城乞食回来,吃过饭后,去到世尊那里。到了之后,向世尊行礼,然后坐在一边。坐在一边的阿难尊者对世尊这样说:'世尊,今天上午,我穿好下衣,拿着钵和上衣,进入王舍城去乞食。世尊,提婆达多看见我在王舍城乞食,便走近我,这样对我说:'从今天起,我,朋友阿难,将离开世尊,离开比丘僧团,独自举行布萨,独自做僧团羯磨。' 世尊,提婆达多今天就要分裂僧团了。' 那时,世尊明白了这件事的含义,在那个时刻,发出了这声感兴的偈颂:'
Atha kho āyasmā ānando rājagahe piṇḍāya caritvā pacchābhattaṃ piṇḍapātappaṭikkanto yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘idhāhaṃ, bhante, pubbaṇhasamayaṃ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya rājagahaṃ piṇḍāya pāvisiṃ. Addasā kho maṃ, bhante, devadatto rājagahe piṇḍāya carantaṃ. Disvāna yenāhaṃ tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā maṃ etadavoca – ‘ajjataggedānāhaṃ, āvuso ānanda, aññatreva bhagavatā, aññatreva bhikkhusaṅghā, uposathaṃ karissāmi saṅghakammaṃ karissāmī’ti. 85“善人易行善,恶人难为之;
恶人易作恶,圣者难为之。”
‘‘Sukaraṃ sādhunā sādhuṃ, sādhuṃ pāpena dukkaraṃ;
86那时,提婆达多就在那个诵戒日,从座位上起身,拿起筹,说道:“贤友们,我们去向沙门乔达摩求了五件事:‘尊者、世尊以种种方式赞叹少欲……乃至……精进努力。尊者,这五件事,以种种方式导向少欲……乃至……精进努力。尊者,但愿比丘们终身都住在山林里,如果有谁进入村庄范围,处罚他就好了……乃至……终身不吃鱼肉,如果有谁吃鱼肉,处罚他就好了。’这五件事,沙门乔达摩不认可。而我们则决心受持这五件事来修行。哪位尊者认可这五件事,他就拿起筹吧。”

344而那时,有大约五百位来自韦沙离的跋耆族青年比丘,他们出家不久,经验也尚浅。他们心想:“这就是法,这就是律,这就是导师的教法。”于是拿起了筹。那时,提婆达多分裂僧团后,带着大约五百比丘前往象鼻山方向去了。那时,舍利弗和大目犍连去到世尊那里,到了之后,向世尊行了大礼,然后坐在一旁。坐在一旁后,尊者舍利弗对世尊这样说:“尊者,提婆达多分裂僧团后,带着大约五百比丘前往象鼻山方向去了。”世尊说:“舍利弗啊,你们两个对那五百位新学比丘,难道就没有悲悯心吗?去,你们两个去吧,趁着那些比丘还没有陷入不幸与毁灭。”“好的,尊者。”尊者舍利弗和大目犍连这样回复世尊后,从座位上起身,向世尊行了大礼,右绕后,便前往象鼻山方向了。
Atha kho devadatto tadahuposathe uṭṭhāyāsanā salākaṃ gāhesi – ‘‘mayaṃ, āvuso, samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ upasaṅkamitvā pañca vatthūni yācimhā – ‘bhagavā, bhante, anekapariyāyena appicchassa…pe… vīriyārambhassa vaṇṇavādī. Imāni, bhante, pañca vatthūni anekapariyāyena appicchatāya…pe… vīriyārambhāya saṃvattanti. Sādhu, bhante, bhikkhū yāvajīvaṃ āraññikā assu; yo gāmantaṃ osareyya, vajjaṃ naṃ phuseyya…pe… yāvajīvaṃ macchamaṃsaṃ na khādeyyuṃ; yo macchamaṃsaṃ khādeyya, vajjaṃ naṃ phuseyyā’ti. Imāni pañca vatthūni samaṇo gotamo nānujānāti. Te mayaṃ imehi pañcahi vatthūhi samādāya vattāma. Yassāyasmato imāni pañca vatthūni khamanti, so salākaṃ gaṇhātū’’ti.
64那时,有一位比丘在世尊不远的地方,站着哭泣。于是世尊问那位比丘:“比丘,你为什么哭呢?”那位比丘说:“尊者,连世尊的上首弟子,舍利弗和大目犍连,他们也去提婆达多那里,认可提婆达多的法义了。”世尊说:“比丘,这是绝对不可能的,没有这种可能,舍利弗和大目犍连会去认可提婆达多的法义,他们去,只是为了开导那些比丘。”
Tena kho pana samayena vesālikā vajjiputtakā pañcamattāni bhikkhusatāni navakā ceva honti appakataññuno ca. Te – ‘ayaṃ dhammo , ayaṃ vinayo, idaṃ satthusāsana’nti – salākaṃ gaṇhiṃsu. Atha kho devadatto saṅghaṃ bhinditvā pañcamattāni bhikkhusatāni ādāya yena gayāsīsaṃ tena pakkāmi. Atha kho sāriputtamoggallānā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu, upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho āyasmā sāriputto bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘devadatto, bhante, saṅghaṃ bhinditvā pañcamattāni bhikkhusatāni ādāya yena gayāsīsaṃ tena pakkanto’’ti. ‘‘Na hi nāma tumhākaṃ, sāriputtā, tesu navakesu bhikkhūsu kāruññampi bhavissati? Gacchatha tumhe, sāriputtā, purā te bhikkhū anayabyasanaṃ āpajjantī’’ti. ‘‘Evaṃ bhante’’ti kho sāriputtamoggallānā bhagavato paṭissutvā uṭṭhāyāsanā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṃ katvā yena gayāsīsaṃ tenupasaṅkamiṃsu.
65那时,提婆达多坐在一大群随从围绕之中,正在说法。提婆达多远远地看见舍利弗和大目犍连走来。看到之后,他对众比丘说:“各位比丘你们看,我所说的法叙述得多么好,连沙门乔达摩的那些上首弟子,舍利弗和大目犍连,他们也到我跟前来,认可我的法义。”听到这样说后,果咖利咖对提婆达多说:“贤友提婆达多,不要信任舍利弗和大目犍连。舍利弗和大目犍连有恶欲,已经被恶欲所掌控了。”提婆达多说:“够了,贤友。他们能来,真是太好了,正因为他们都认可我的法义了。”
Tena kho pana samayena aññataro bhikkhu bhagavato avidūre rodamāno ṭhito hoti. Atha kho bhagavā taṃ bhikkhuṃ etadavoca – ‘‘kissa tvaṃ, bhikkhu, rodasī’’ti? ‘‘Yepi te, bhante, bhagavato aggasāvakā sāriputtamoggallānā tepi devadattassa santike gacchanti devadattassa dhammaṃ rocentā’’ti. ‘‘Aṭṭhānametaṃ, bhikkhu, anavakāso, yaṃ sāriputtamoggallānā devadattassa dhammaṃ roceyyuṃ, api ca te gatā bhikkhūnaṃ saññattiyā’’ti .
345然后,提婆达多以半座之礼邀请尊者舍利弗:“来,贤友舍利弗,请坐在这里吧。”“不用了,贤友。”尊者舍利弗这样说,取了自己的一个座位,坐到了一旁。尊者大目犍连也取了自己的一个座位,坐到了一旁。之后,提婆达多用了前半夜很多时间,以法语教示、劝导、激励、令比丘众欢喜,然后对尊者舍利弗请求说:“贤友舍利弗,比丘僧团现在已经没有昏沉和懒惰了。贤友舍利弗,你来为比丘众说法吧,我的后背有些酸痛,我要伸展一下。”“好的,贤友。”尊者舍利弗这样答应了提婆达多。于是,提婆达多把僧伽梨衣大衣叠成四层铺好,然后右侧卧躺下了。他疲累不堪,一直忘失正念,没有正知,没过一会儿就陷入沉睡了。
Tena kho pana samayena devadatto mahatiyā parisāya parivutto dhammaṃ desento nisinno hoti. Addasā kho devadatto sāriputtamoggallāne dūratova āgacchante. Disvāna bhikkhū āmantesi – ‘‘passatha, bhikkhave, yāva svākkhāto mayā dhammo, yepi te samaṇassa gotamassa aggasāvakā sāriputtamoggallānā tepi mama santike āgacchanti. Mama dhammaṃ rocentā’’ti. Evaṃ vutte kokāliko devadattaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘mā, āvuso devadatta, sāriputtamoggallāne vissasi . Pāpicchā sāriputtamoggallānā , pāpikānaṃ icchānaṃ vasaṃ gatā’’ti. ‘‘Alaṃ, āvuso. Svāgataṃ tesaṃ yato me dhammaṃ rocentī’’ti.
67那时,尊者舍利弗以他心智变示导和教诫之法,说法教授、教导比丘众;尊者大目犍连以神变示导和教诫之法,说法教授、教导比丘众。就在尊者舍利弗以他心智变示导和教诫之法,以及尊者大目犍连以神变示导和教诫之法教授、教导这些比丘的过程中,他们内心远离尘垢、去除污染,法眼生起了:“任何具有集起本质的法,那一切也都具有灭尽的本质。”
Atha kho devadatto āyasmantaṃ sāriputtaṃ upaḍḍhāsanena nimantesi – ‘‘ehāvuso sāriputta, idha nisīdāhī’’ti. ‘‘Alaṃ āvuso’’ti kho āyasmā sāriputto aññataraṃ āsanaṃ gahetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Āyasmāpi kho mahāmoggallāno aññataraṃ āsanaṃ gahetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Atha kho devadatto bahudeva rattiṃ bhikkhū dhammiyā kathāya sandassetvā samādapetvā samuttejetvā sampahaṃsetvā āyasmantaṃ sāriputtaṃ ajjhesi – ‘‘vigatathinamiddho kho, āvuso sāriputta, bhikkhusaṅgho. Paṭibhātu taṃ, āvuso sāriputta, bhikkhūnaṃ dhammī kathā, piṭṭhi me āgilāyati, tamahaṃ āyamissāmī’’ti. ‘‘Evamāvuso’’ti kho āyasmā sāriputto devadattassa paccassosi. Atha kho devadatto catugguṇaṃ saṅghāṭiṃ paññāpetvā dakkhiṇena passena seyyaṃ kappesi. Tassa kilamantassa muṭṭhassatissa asampajānassa muhuttakeneva niddā okkami.
68那时,具寿舍利弗以示教神变的教诫,以法语教诫、劝导比丘们。具寿大目犍连以神通神变的教诫,以法语教诫、劝导比丘们。那时,那些比丘被具寿舍利弗以示教神变的教诫、被具寿大目犍连以神通神变的教诫所教诫、劝导时,生起了远尘离垢的法眼——凡任何集法,一切皆是灭法。
Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto ādesanāpāṭihāriyānusāsaniyā bhikkhū dhammiyā kathāya ovadi anusāsi. Āyasmā mahāmoggallāno iddhipāṭihāriyānusāsaniyā bhikkhū dhammiyā kathāya ovadi anusāsi. Atha kho tesaṃ bhikkhūnaṃ āyasmatā sāriputtena ādesanāpāṭihāriyānusāsaniyā āyasmatā ca mahāmoggallānena iddhipāṭihāriyānusāsaniyā ovadiyamānānaṃ anusāsiyamānānaṃ virajaṃ vītamalaṃ dhammacakkhuṃ udapādi – yaṃ kiñci samudayadhammaṃ, sabbaṃ taṃ nirodhadhammanti.
69那时,具寿舍利弗对比丘们说:“贤友们,我们去世尊那里吧。你们当中若是认可那位世尊的法的,就请跟上来。”于是,舍利弗与目犍连便带着那五百位比丘,前往竹林园。这时,拘咖离伽把提婆达多唤醒,说道:“快起来,提婆达多贤友,你的那些比丘都被舍利弗和目犍连带走了!提婆达多贤友,我不是早跟你说过吗:‘提婆达多贤友,不要信任舍利弗和目犍连。舍利弗和目犍连有恶欲,是被恶欲所支配的人!’”就在那时,提婆达多当场从口中喷出了滚烫的热血。
Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto bhikkhū āmantesi – ‘‘gacchāma mayaṃ, āvuso, bhagavato santike. Yo tassa bhagavato dhammaṃ rocesi so āgacchatū’’ti. Atha kho sāriputtamoggallānā tāni pañcabhikkhusatāni ādāya yena veḷuvanaṃ tenupasaṅkamiṃsu. Atha kho kokāliko devadattaṃ uṭṭhāpesi – ‘‘uṭṭhehi, āvuso devadatta, nītā te bhikkhū sāriputtamoggallānehi. Nanu tvaṃ, āvuso devadatta, mayā vutto – ‘mā, āvuso devadatta, sāriputtamoggallāne vissāsi. Pāpicchā sāriputtamoggallānā, pāpikānaṃ icchānaṃ vasaṃ gatā’’’ti? Atha kho devadattassa tattheva uṇhaṃ lohitaṃ mukhato uggañchi.
70那时,舍利弗与目犍连到了世尊那里,礼敬世尊后,坐在一边。具寿舍利弗坐定后,对世尊这样说:“尊者,那些参与了破僧行为的比丘,是否还应该再为他们授具足戒呢?”世尊说:“够了,舍利弗。你不要喜欢给那些参与破僧行为的比丘再授具足戒。舍利弗,不过你可以让他们忏悔偷兰遮罪。舍利弗,提婆达多是怎么行事的呢?”舍利弗回答:“尊者,正如世尊您会在夜里长时间地用说法教导、鼓励、激发、令比丘们欢喜之后,对我说:‘舍利弗,比丘僧团已经离去了昏沉与睡眠;舍利弗,你为比丘们说法吧,我的背有些痛,我要休息一下了。’提婆达多正是模仿您的这种做法行事的。”
Atha kho sāriputtamoggallānā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu, upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdisuṃ. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho āyasmā sāriputto bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘sādhu, bhante , bhedakānuvattakā bhikkhū puna upasampajjeyyu’’nti. ‘‘Alaṃ, sāriputta. Mā te rucci bhedakānuvattakānaṃ bhikkhūnaṃ puna upasampadā. Tena hi tvaṃ, sāriputta, bhedakānuvattake bhikkhū thullaccayaṃ desāpehi. Kathaṃ pana te, sāriputta, devadatto paṭipajjī’’ti? ‘‘Yatheva, bhante, bhagavā bahudeva rattiṃ bhikkhū dhammiyā kathāya sandassetvā samādapetvā samuttejetvā sampahaṃsetvā maṃ ajjhesati – ‘vigatathinamiddho kho , sāriputta, bhikkhusaṅgho; paṭibhātu taṃ, sāriputta, bhikkhūnaṃ dhammī kathā, piṭṭhi me āgilāyati, tamahaṃ āyamissāmī’ti, evameva kho, bhante, devadatto paṭipajjī’’ti.
346那时,世尊对比丘们说:“比丘们,过去,在一个森林深处有一个大湖。一群大象依着那湖居住。它们潜入湖中,用鼻子拔出藕根,冲洗得干干净净,不带一点泥地咀嚼后吞下去。这对它们来说,既能增长气色,也能增长体力,不会因此导致死亡或接近死亡的痛苦。然而,比丘们,那些追随大公象学习的小象、幼象们,也潜入那湖中,用鼻子拔出藕根,却没有冲洗干净,带着泥就咀嚼后吞了下去。这对它们来说,既不能增长气色,也不能增长体力,反而会因此导致死亡或接近死亡的痛苦。同样地,比丘们,提婆达多这样盲目地仿效我,这个可怜人将会因此毁灭。
Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi – ‘‘bhūtapubbaṃ, bhikkhave, araññāyatane mahāsarasī. Taṃ nāgā upanissāya vihariṃsu. Te taṃ sarasiṃ ogāhetvā, soṇḍāya bhisamuḷālaṃ abbuhitvā, suvikkhālitaṃ vikkhāletvā, akaddamaṃ saṅkhāditvā, ajjhoharanti. Tesaṃ taṃ vaṇṇāya ceva hoti, balāya ca. Na ca tatonidānaṃ maraṇaṃ vā nigacchanti, maraṇamattaṃ vā dukkhaṃ. Tesaṃyeva kho pana, bhikkhave, mahānāgānaṃ anusikkhamānā taruṇā bhiṅkacchāpā. Te taṃ sarasiṃ ogāhetvā, soṇḍāya bhisamuḷālaṃ abbuhitvā, na suvikkhālitaṃ vikkhāletvā, sakaddamaṃ saṅkhāditvā, ajjhoharanti. Tesaṃ taṃ neva vaṇṇāya hoti, na balāya. Tatonidānañca maraṇaṃ vā nigacchanti, maraṇamattaṃ vā dukkhaṃ. Evameva kho, bhikkhave, devadatto mamānukrubbaṃ kapaṇo marissatīti.
99“如同那在河中警觉、以藕为食的大野猪,
‘‘Mahāvarāhassa mahiṃ vikrubbato , bhisaṃ ghasānassa nadīsu jaggato;
100如同那吞食淤泥的雏鹰,这样盲目地仿效我,这个可怜人将会因此毁灭。”
Bhiṅkova paṅkaṃ abhibhakkhayitvā, mamānukrubbaṃ kapaṇo marissatī’’ti.
347“比丘们,具备了八项条件的比丘,可以胜任使者的工作。哪八项呢?比丘们,这里的一位比丘,是能听者,是能说者,是能学记者,是能持守者,是能解义者,是能令解义者,善于分辨法义与非义,并且不引发争论——比丘们,具备了这八项条件的比丘,可以胜任使者的工作。
‘‘Aṭṭhahi, bhikkhave, aṅgehi samannāgato bhikkhu dūteyyaṃ gantumarahati. Katamehi aṭṭhahi? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sotā ca hoti, sāvetā ca, uggahetā ca, dhāretā ca, viññātā ca, viññāpetā ca, kusalo ca sahitāsahitassa, no ca kalahakārako – imehi kho, bhikkhave, aṭṭhahaṅgehi samannāgato bhikkhu dūteyyaṃ gantumarahati.
73“比丘们,舍利弗具备了八项条件,可以胜任使者的工作。哪八项呢?比丘们,这里的舍利弗,是能听者,是能说者,是能学记者,是能持守者,是能解义者,是能令解义者,善于分辨法义与非义,并且不引发争论——比丘们,具备了这八项条件的舍利弗,可以胜任使者的工作。”
‘‘Aṭṭhahi , bhikkhave, aṅgehi samannāgato sāriputto dūteyyaṃ gantumarahati. Katamehi aṭṭhahi? Idha, bhikkhave, sāriputto sotā ca hoti, sāvetā ca, uggahetā ca, dhāretā ca, viññātā ca, viññāpetā ca, kusalo ca sahitāsahitassa, no ca kalahakārako – imehi kho, bhikkhave, aṭṭhahaṅgehi samannāgato sāriputto dūteyyaṃ gantumarahatīti.
103“那真正的人,来到激烈争辩的集会中,不会动摇;
‘‘Yo ve na byathati patvā, parisaṃ uggavādiniṃ;
104他不减损教导,也不掩藏教法。
Na ca hāpeti vacanaṃ, na ca chādeti sāsanaṃ.
105毫无犹豫地讲说,被询问时也不恼怒;
‘‘Asandiddho ca akkhāti , pucchito ca na kuppati;
106这样的比丘,才有资格承担信使的任务。
Sa ve tādisako bhikkhu, dūteyyaṃ gantumarahatī’’ti.
348比丘们,提婆达多被八种不善法征服、心被完全掌控,他是堕恶趣者、地狱有情、住一劫者、无可救治者。是哪八种?比丘们,提婆达多被利得征服、心被完全掌控,他是堕恶趣者、地狱有情、住一劫者、无可救治者;比丘们,被非利得……被名声……被无名……被恭敬……被不恭敬……被恶欲……被恶友征服、心被完全掌控,提婆达多是堕恶趣者、地狱有情、住一劫者、无可救治者。比丘们,提婆达多就是被这八种不善法征服、心被完全掌控,所以是堕恶趣者、地狱有情、住一劫者、无可救治者。
‘‘Aṭṭhahi, bhikkhave, asaddhammehi abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto devadatto āpāyiko nerayiko kappaṭṭho atekiccho. Katamehi aṭṭhahi ? Lābhena, bhikkhave, abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto devadatto āpāyiko nerayiko kappaṭṭho atekiccho; alābhena, bhikkhave…pe… yasena, bhikkhave…pe… ayasena, bhikkhave…pe… sakkārena, bhikkhave…pe… asakkārena, bhikkhave…pe… pāpicchatāya, bhikkhave…pe… pāpamittatāya bhikkhave, abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto devadatto āpāyiko nerayiko kappaṭṭho atekiccho – imehi kho, bhikkhave, aṭṭhahi asaddhammehi abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto devadatto āpāyiko nerayiko kappaṭṭho atekiccho.
349比丘们,比丘应当在对生起的利得一次又一次地克服中安住,对生起的非利得……对生起的名声……对生起的无名……对生起的恭敬……对生起的不恭敬……对生起的恶欲……对生起的恶友一次又一次地克服中安住,这样是很好的。比丘们,比丘是基于什么目的,应当在对生起的利得一次又一次地克服中安住,对生起的非利得……对生起的名声……对生起的无名……对生起的恭敬……对生起的不恭敬……对生起的恶欲……对生起的恶友一次又一次地克服中安住呢?比丘们,如果比丘在生起的利得面前不能克服而安住,就会生起烦恼与焦灼苦恼;在对生起的利得一次又一次地克服中安住,这些烦恼与焦灼苦恼就不会生起。比丘们,如果比丘在生起的非利得……在生起的名声……在生起的无名……在生起的恭敬……在生起的不恭敬……在生起的恶欲……在生起的恶友面前不能克服而安住,就会生起烦恼与焦灼苦恼;在对生起的恶友一次又一次地克服中安住,这些烦恼与焦灼苦恼就不会生起。比丘们,就是基于这个目的,比丘应当在生起的利得、生起的非利得、生起的名声、生起的无名、生起的恭敬、生起的不恭敬、生起的恶欲、生起的恶友中,一次又一次地克服而安住。所以,比丘们,你们应当这样学:'我们要在利得生起时一次又一次地克服而安住,在非利得生起时……在名声生起时……在无名生起时……在恭敬生起时……在不恭敬生起时……在恶欲生起时……在恶友生起时一次又一次地克服而安住。'比丘们,你们应当这样来学。

350比丘们,提婆达多被三种不善法征服、心被完全掌控,他是堕恶趣者、地狱有情、住一劫者、无可救治者。是哪三种?恶欲、恶友,以及仅证得一些微小的殊胜成就便中途陷入退堕——比丘们,提婆达多就是被这三种不善法征服、心被完全掌控,所以是堕恶趣者、地狱有情、住一劫者、无可救治者。
‘‘Tīhi, bhikkhave, asaddhammehi abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto devadatto āpāyiko nerayiko kappaṭṭho atekiccho. Katamehi tīhi? Pāpicchatā, pāpamittatā, oramattakena visesādhigamena antarā vosānaṃ āpādi – imehi kho, bhikkhave, tīhi asaddhammehi abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto devadatto āpāyiko nerayiko kappaṭṭho atekicchoti.
110愿世间永远不要再有,心怀恶欲的人出现;
‘‘Mā jātu koci lokasmiṃ, pāpiccho udapajjatha;
111你们现在就从这件事上,了解恶欲者的最终归宿吧。
Tadamināpi jānātha, pāpicchānaṃ yathāgati.
112他以智者著称,被公认已具修养;
‘‘Paṇḍitoti samaññāto, bhāvitattoti sammato;
113我听说,提婆达多曾以名声如同火焰般闪耀。
Jalaṃva yasasā aṭṭhā, devadattoti me sutaṃ.
114他沉溺于放逸,冒犯了那位如来;
‘‘So pamādaṃ anuciṇṇo, āsajja naṃ tathāgataṃ;
115最终堕入那四门恐怖的无间地狱。
Avīcinirayaṃ patto, catudvāraṃ bhayānakaṃ.
116谁若伤害一个无辜、不曾作恶的人,
‘‘Aduṭṭhassa hi yo dubbhe, pāpakammaṃ akrubbato;
117那恶果便触及那邪恶无礼之人。
Tameva pāpaṃ phusati, duṭṭhacittaṃ anādaraṃ.
118若有人以为能用一瓶毒药去污染大海,
‘‘Samuddaṃ visakumbhena, yo maññeyya padūsituṃ ;
119他并不能以此污染,因为那广大的海洋深不可测。
Na so tena padūseyya, bhesmā hi udadhī mahā.
120同样地,谁若以言语攻击如来——
‘‘Evameva tathāgataṃ, yo vādenupahiṃsati;
121那已入定、内心寂静的等正觉者,他的言语是伤不了他的。
Samaggataṃ santacittaṃ, vādo tamhi na rūhati.
122有智慧的人应当结交这样的朋友,并亲近他——
‘‘Tādisaṃ mittaṃ krubbetha , tañca sevetha paṇḍito;
123随其道而行的比丘,便能到达苦的尽头。
Yassa maggānugo bhikkhu, khayaṃ dukkhassa pāpuṇe’’ti.

351那时,优波离尊者来到世尊那里,到了之后,向世尊行礼,然后在一边坐下。坐在一边的优波离尊者对世尊这样说:“尊者,人们说‘僧团分歧、僧团分歧’。尊者,究竟到何种程度,算是有了僧团分歧,但还没有僧团破裂?又到何种程度,才既是僧团分歧,又是僧团破裂呢?”
Atha kho āyasmā upāli yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho āyasmā upāli bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘saṅgharāji saṅgharājīti, bhante, vuccati. Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, saṅgharāji hoti, no ca saṅghabhedo? Kittāvatā ca pana saṅgharāji ceva hoti saṅghabhedo cā’’ti?
78“优波离,一边有一个人,另一边有两个人,由第四个人来宣布、收取筹票,说:‘这是法,这是律,这是导师的教法,你们接受这个,认可这个吧。’优波离,这样的话就是有了僧团分歧,但还没有僧团破裂。优波离,一边有两个人,另一边也有两个人,由第五个人来宣布、收取筹票,说:‘这是法,这是律,这是导师的教法,你们接受这个,认可这个吧。’优波离,这样的话也是有了僧团分歧,但还没有僧团破裂。优波离,一边有两个人,另一边有三个人,由第六个人来宣布、收取筹票,说:‘这是法,这是律,这是导师的教法,你们接受这个,认可这个吧。’优波离,这样的话也是有了僧团分歧,但还没有僧团破裂。优波离,一边有三个人,另一边也有三个人,由第七个人来宣布、收取筹票,说:‘这是法,这是律,这是导师的教法,你们接受这个,认可这个吧。’优波离,这样的话也是有了僧团分歧,但还没有僧团破裂。优波离,一边有三个人,另一边有四个人,由第八个人来宣布、收取筹票,说:‘这是法,这是律,这是导师的教法,你们接受这个,认可这个吧。’优波离,这样的话也是有了僧团分歧,但还没有僧团破裂。优波离,一边有四个人,另一边也有四个人,由第九个人来宣布、收取筹票,说:‘这是法,这是律,这是导师的教法,你们接受这个,认可这个吧。’优波离,这样的话,就既是僧团分歧,又是僧团破裂了。优波离,对于九个人,或者超过九个人的情况,就既是僧团分歧,又是僧团破裂了。优波离,比丘尼不能破僧,但她可以致力于造成分裂;在学女不能破僧……沙马内拉不能破僧,沙马内莉不能破僧,近事男不能破僧,近事女不能破僧,但他们可以致力于造成分裂。优波离,只有本性未损、同住一处、共处同一界内的比丘,才能够破僧。”

Evampi kho, upāli, saṅgharāji hoti, no ca saṅghabhedo. Evampi kho, upāli, saṅgharāji hoti, no ca saṅghabhedo. Ekato, upāli, cattāro honti, ekato cattāro, navamo anussāveti, salākaṃ gāheti – ‘ayaṃ dhammo, ayaṃ vinayo, idaṃ satthusāsanaṃ, imaṃ gaṇhatha, imaṃ rocethā’ti . Evaṃ kho, upāli, saṅgharāji ceva hoti saṅghabhedo ca. Navannaṃ vā, upāli, atirekanavannaṃ vā saṅgharāji ceva hoti saṅghabhedo ca. Na kho, upāli, bhikkhunī saṅghaṃ bhindati, api ca bhedāya parakkamati, na sikkhamānā saṅghaṃ bhindati…pe… na sāmaṇero saṅghaṃ bhindati, na sāmaṇerī saṅghaṃ bhindati, na upāsako saṅghaṃ bhindati, na upāsikā saṅghaṃ bhindati, api ca bhedāya parakkamati. Bhikkhu kho, upāli, pakatatto, samānasaṃvāsako, samānasīmāyaṃ ṭhito, saṅghaṃ bhindatī’’ti.
352“尊者,人们说‘破僧、破僧’。尊者,究竟到何种程度,僧团可以说是被破坏了呢?”
‘‘Saṅghabhedo saṅghabhedoti, bhante, vuccati. Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, saṅgho bhinno hotī’’ti?
80“优波离,在此,有些比丘们将非法宣说为法,将法宣说为非法;将非律宣说为律,将律宣说为非律;将如来未说未讲的说成是如来所说所讲,将如来所说所讲的宣传为如来未说未讲;将如来所未曾行持的宣说为如来所行持,将如来所行持的宣说为如来所未曾行持;将如来所未曾制定的宣说为如来所制定,将如来所制定的宣说为如来未曾制定;将非罪宣传为罪,将罪宣传为非罪;将轻罪宣传为重罪,将重罪宣传为轻罪;将有余罪宣传为无余罪,将无余罪宣传为有余罪;将粗重罪宣传为非粗重罪,将非粗重罪宣传为粗重罪。他们用这十八种事由进行拉拢离间,另行举行布萨,另行举行自恣,另行进行僧团羯磨。优波离,到这种程度,僧团就可以说是被破坏了。”

Te imehi aṭṭhārasahi vatthūhi apakassanti, avapakassanti, āveniṃ uposathaṃ karonti, āveniṃ pavāraṇaṃ karonti, āveniṃ saṅghakammaṃ karonti. Ettāvatā kho, upāli, saṅgho bhinno hotī’’ti.
353“尊者,人们说‘僧团和合、僧团和合’,到什么程度,尊者,才算是僧团和合呢?”“优波离,在此,比丘们宣说非法为非法,宣说法为法;宣说非律为非律,宣说律为律;宣说如来未说未宣者为‘如来未说未宣’,宣说如来已说已宣者为‘如来已说已宣’;宣说如来未行者为‘如来未行’,宣说如来已行者为‘如来已行’;宣说如来未制定者为‘如来未制定’,宣说如来已制定者为‘如来已制定’;宣说无罪为无罪,宣说有罪为有罪;宣说轻罪为轻罪,宣说重罪为重罪;宣说有残余罪为有残余罪,宣说无残余罪为无残余罪;宣说粗重罪为粗重罪,宣说非粗重罪为非粗重罪。他们凭这十八种事不排斥、不驱除同见者,不另作布萨,不另作自恣,不另作僧伽羯磨。优波离,到这种程度,僧团便是和合的。”
‘‘Saṅghasāmaggī saṅghasāmaggīti, bhante, vuccati. 354“尊者,那么,若破坏了和合的僧团,他会招来什么呢?”“优波离,破坏了和合的僧团,他会招来持续一劫的罪业,在地狱中煮烧一劫。”
‘‘Samaggaṃ pana, bhante, saṅghaṃ bhinditvā kiṃ so pasavatī’’ti? ‘‘Samaggaṃ kho, upāli, saṅghaṃ bhinditvā kappaṭṭhikaṃ kibbisaṃ pasavati, kappaṃ nirayamhi paccatī’’ti.
131“破僧者,必堕恶趣,必入地狱,住满一劫;
‘‘Āpāyiko nerayiko, kappaṭṭho saṅghabhedako;
132喜好分派别,住于非法者,从安稳的境界坠落;
Vaggarato adhammaṭṭho, yogakkhemā padhaṃsati;
133破坏了和合的僧团,便会在地狱中煮烧一劫。”
Saṅghaṃ samaggaṃ bhinditvā, kappaṃ nirayamhi paccatī’’ti.
83“尊者,那么,若将被破坏的僧团和合起来,他会招来什么呢?”“优波离,将被破坏的僧团和合起来,他会招来殊胜的福德,在天界享乐一劫。”
‘‘Bhinnaṃ pana, bhante, saṅghaṃ samaggaṃ katvā kiṃ so pasavatī’’ti? ‘‘Bhinnaṃ kho, upāli, saṅghaṃ samaggaṃ katvā brahmaṃ puññaṃ pasavati, kappaṃ saggamhi modatī’’ti.
135“僧团的和合是安乐的,促成和合者亦得助益;
‘‘Sukhā saṅghassa sāmaggī, samaggānañca anuggaho;
136喜好和合,住于法者,不会从安稳的境界坠落;
Samaggarato dhammaṭṭho, yogakkhemā na dhaṃsati;
137使僧团和合之后,他在天界享乐一劫。
Saṅghaṃ samaggaṃ katvāna, kappaṃ saggamhi modatī’’ti.
355“尊者,请问破僧者会是堕恶趣者、地狱有情、住一劫者、无救者吗?”“优波离,是有可能,破僧者是堕恶趣者、地狱有情、住一劫者、无救者。”
‘‘Siyā nu kho, bhante, saṅghabhedako āpāyiko, nerayiko, kappaṭṭho, atekiccho’’ti? ‘‘Siyā, upāli, saṅghabhedako āpāyiko, nerayiko, kappaṭṭho, atekiccho’’ti.
85“尊者,那么有没有可能破僧者不是堕恶趣者、不是地狱有情、不是住一劫者、不是无救者呢?”“优波离,是有可能,破僧者不是堕恶趣者、不是地狱有情、不是住一劫者、不是无救者。”
‘‘Siyā pana, bhante, saṅghabhedako na āpāyiko, na nerayiko, na kappaṭṭho, na atekiccho’’ti? ‘‘Siyā, upāli, saṅghabhedako na āpāyiko, na nerayiko, na kappaṭṭho, na atekiccho’’ti.
86“尊者,那什么样的破僧者是堕恶趣者、地狱有情、住一劫者、无救者呢?”“优波离,这里有个比丘,把非法解释成法。他对这非法持有非法见,对分裂持有非法见,他确立了见、确立了忍、确立了意乐、确立了心态之后,便宣布并让人取筹——‘这是法,这是律,这是导师的教示,你们接受这个,认可这个吧。’优波离,这样的破僧者就是堕恶趣者、地狱有情、住一劫者、无救者。”
‘‘Katamo pana, bhante, saṅghabhedako āpāyiko, nerayiko, kappaṭṭho, atekiccho’’ti? ‘‘Idhupāli, bhikkhu adhammaṃ dhammoti dīpeti. 152打谷、去稻草,扬去谷壳。
Puñjamaddapalālañca, bhusaophuṇanīhare;
153未来也永无穷尽,父亲们和祖父们也是如此。
Āyatimpi na khīyanti, pitaro ca pitāmahā.
154跋提、阿那律、阿难、跋咕、吉米喇,
Bhaddiyo anuruddho ca, ānando bhagu kimilo;
155这些释迦族的骄傲,和咖古多一起,在憍赏弥全都消退了。
Sakyamāno ca kosambiṃ, parihāyi kakudhena ca.
156他教化父亲的随从,也让那拉吉利怀有戒德;
Pakāsesi pituno ca, purise silaṃ nāḷāgiriṃ;
157他犯下三类五种的粗重罪,以粗重罪的方式分裂僧团;

158三、八,又回到三,如此又怎会有和合,或分裂的可能呢?
