899如是我闻:有一次,具寿阿那律住在沙瓦提城的揭德林给孤独园。那时,具寿阿那律独自一人静处时,心里生起了这样的思惟:“凡是错失了四念处的人,他们也就错失了通向彻底灭苦的圣道;凡是着手修习了四念处的人,他们也就走上了通向彻底灭苦的圣道。”
Evaṃ me sutaṃ – ekaṃ samayaṃ āyasmā anuruddho sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. Atha kho āyasmato anuruddhassa rahogatassa paṭisallīnassa evaṃ cetaso parivitakko udapādi – ‘‘yesaṃ kesañci cattāro satipaṭṭhānā viraddhā, viraddho tesaṃ ariyo maggo sammā dukkhakkhayagāmī. Yesaṃ kesañci cattāro satipaṭṭhānā āraddhā, āraddho tesaṃ ariyo maggo sammā dukkhakkhayagāmī’’ti.
5那时,具寿大目犍连以他的心,了知了具寿阿那律心中的思惟,就像一个强壮的人把弯曲的手臂伸直,或者把伸直的手臂弯曲那样快,瞬间就出现在了具寿阿那律的面前。接着,具寿大目犍连对具寿阿那律这样说:“朋友阿那律,比丘修习到什么样的程度,才算是四念处已经着手修习了呢?”
Atha kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno āyasmato anuruddhassa cetasā cetoparivitakkamaññāya – seyyathāpi nāma balavā puriso samiñjitaṃ vā bāhaṃ pasāreyya, pasāritaṃ vā bāhaṃ samiñjeyya, evameva – āyasmato anuruddhassa sammukhe pāturahosi. Atha kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno āyasmantaṃ anuruddhaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘kittāvatā nu kho, āvuso anuruddha, bhikkhuno cattāro satipaṭṭhānā āraddhā hontī’’ti?
6“朋友,在这里,比丘于内在的身体上,持续地随观生起的现象而安住;于内在的身体上,持续地随观灭去的现象而安住;于内在的身体上,持续地随观生起和灭去的现象而安住,他保持着精进、正知、具念,已经调伏了对世间的贪欲与忧恼。于外在的身体上,持续地随观生起的现象而安住;于外在的身体上,持续地随观灭去的现象而安住;于外在的身体上,持续地随观生起和灭去的现象而安住,他保持着精进、正知、具念,已经调伏了对世间的贪欲与忧恼。于内外在的身体上,持续地随观生起的现象而安住;于内外在的身体上,持续地随观灭去的现象而安住;于内外在的身体上,持续地随观生起和灭去的现象而安住,他保持着精进、正知、具念,已经调伏了对世间的贪欲与忧恼。”
‘‘Idhāvuso, bhikkhu ajjhattaṃ kāye samudayadhammānupassī viharati, ajjhattaṃ kāye vayadhammānupassī viharati, ajjhattaṃ kāye samudayavayadhammānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṃ. 7“如果他希望‘让我在不可厌的对象上,作可厌之想而安住’,那么他就在那里作可厌之想而安住;如果他希望‘让我在可厌的对象上,作不可厌之想而安住’,那么他就在那里作不可厌之想而安住;如果他希望‘让我在不可厌和可厌的两种对象上,都作可厌之想而安住’,那么他就在那里作可厌之想而安住;如果他希望‘让我在可厌和不可厌的两种对象上,都作不可厌之想而安住’,那么他就在那里作不可厌之想而安住;如果他希望‘避开不可厌和可厌这两者之后,让我平等、具念、正知地安住’,那么他就在那里平等、具念、正知地安住。”

9「若他希望:『我应于不厌恶的对象具厌恶想而住』,他于彼处具厌恶想而住;若他希望:『我应于厌恶的对象具不厌恶想而住』,他于彼处具不厌恶想而住;若他希望:『我应于不厌恶的与厌恶的对象具厌恶想而住』,他于彼处具厌恶想而住;若他希望:『我应于厌恶的与不厌恶的对象具不厌恶想而住』,他于彼处具不厌恶想而住;若他希望:『我应舍弃不厌恶的与厌恶的两者,具念、正知而住于舍』,他于彼处具念、正知而住于舍。

13『如果他希望:「我应住于对不厌恶者有厌恶想」,他就住于对那里有厌恶想……(中略)……他住于对那里保持舍心、具念、正知。贤友,在这个程度上,比丘的四念处被修习了。』第一经。

900这件事发生在沙瓦提城。那时,具寿阿那律在独自隐居、独处的时候,心里生起了这样的思惟:“凡是四念处被错失的人,对他们而言,正确导向苦灭的圣道也被错失了;凡是四念处被发动起来的人,对他们而言,正确导向苦灭的圣道也被发动起来了。”
Sāvatthinidānaṃ. Atha kho āyasmato anuruddhassa rahogatassa paṭisallīnassa evaṃ cetaso parivitakko udapādi – ‘‘yesaṃ kesañci cattāro satipaṭṭhānā viraddhā, viraddho tesaṃ ariyo maggo sammā dukkhakkhayagāmī; yesaṃ kesañci cattāro satipaṭṭhānā āraddhā, āraddho tesaṃ ariyo maggo sammā dukkhakkhayagāmī’’ti.
16时,具寿大目犍连以心了知具寿阿那律的心中寻思——犹如有力的男子伸展弯曲的手臂,或弯曲伸展的手臂,如是——出现在具寿阿那律面前。
Atha kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno āyasmato anuruddhassa cetasā cetoparivitakkamaññāya – seyyathāpi nāma balavā puriso samiñjitaṃ vā bāhaṃ pasāreyya , pasāritaṃ vā bāhaṃ samiñjeyya, evameva – āyasmato anuruddhassa sammukhe pāturahosi.
17接着,具寿大目犍连就对具寿阿那律说:“阿那律贤友,一位比丘要修到什么程度,才算是已经开始了四念处的修习呢?”
Atha kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno āyasmantaṃ anuruddhaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘kittāvatā nu kho, āvuso anuruddha, bhikkhuno cattāro satipaṭṭhānā āraddhā hontī’’ti?
18“贤友,就是这位比丘,他对于自己内在的身体,持续地观照着身体而住,精勤、正知、具念,调伏了对于世间的贪欲和忧恼。他对于外在的身体,持续地观照着身体而住……对于内在和外在的身体,持续地观照着身体而住,精勤、正知、具念,调伏了对于世间的贪欲和忧恼。

901有一次,具寿阿那律住在舍卫城的苏德努河边。那时,众多比丘来到具寿阿那律那里;到了之后,和具寿阿那律互相友好问候。彼此说了让人欢喜、值得铭记的话之后,他们坐在一旁。坐在一旁的比丘们对具寿阿那律这样说:“具寿阿那律是因为修习、多修习了哪些法,才获得了大神通呢?”
Ekaṃ samayaṃ āyasmā anuruddho sāvatthiyaṃ viharati sutanutīre. Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū yenāyasmā anuruddho tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā anuruddhena saddhiṃ sammodiṃsu. Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sāraṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu. Ekamantaṃ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū āyasmantaṃ anuruddhaṃ etadavocuṃ – ‘‘katamesaṃ āyasmā anuruddho dhammānaṃ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā mahābhiññataṃ patto’’ti?
25“朋友们,我是因为修习、多修习了四念处,才获得大神通的。是哪四个呢?朋友们,在这里,我于身,持续地观照着身而安住,是精勤的、正知的、具念的,已经调伏了对世间的贪欲和忧恼;于感受……于内心……于诸法,持续地观照着诸法而安住,是精勤的、正知的、具念的,已经调伏了对世间的贪欲和忧恼。朋友们,就是因为我修习、多修习了这四念处,才获得了大神通。而且,朋友们,正是因为修习、多修习了这四念处,我如实了知了下劣的法是下劣的,中等的法是中等的,殊胜的法是殊胜的。” 第三经。
‘‘Catunnaṃ khvāhaṃ, āvuso, satipaṭṭhānānaṃ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā mahābhiññataṃ patto. Katamesaṃ catunnaṃ? 902有一次,具寿阿那律、具寿舍利弗和具寿大目犍连,一起住在沙计多的荆棘林里。那时,具寿舍利弗和具寿大目犍连在傍晚时分,从独自禅修中出来,前往具寿阿那律那里;到了之后,和具寿阿那律互相友好问候。彼此说了让人欢喜、值得铭记的话之后,他们坐在一旁。坐在一旁的具寿舍利弗对具寿阿那律这样说:“阿那律朋友,一位有学的比丘,应该具足安住于哪些法呢?”

28“舍利弗朋友,一位有学的比丘,应该具足安住于四念处。是哪四个呢?朋友,在这里,一位比丘于身,持续地观照着身而安住,是精勤的、正知的、具念的,已经调伏了对世间的贪欲和忧恼;于感受……于内心……于诸法,持续地观照着诸法而安住,是精勤的、正知的、具念的,已经调伏了对世间的贪欲和忧恼。舍利弗朋友,这就是一位有学的比丘应该具足安住的四念处。” 第四经。

903在沙计多发生的事情。坐在一旁的具寿舍利弗对具寿阿那律这样说:“阿那律朋友,一位无学的比丘,应该具足安住于哪些法呢?”“舍利弗朋友,一位无学的比丘,应该具足安住于四念处。是哪四个呢?朋友,在这里,一位比丘于身,持续地观照着身而安住,是精勤的、正知的、具念的,已经调伏了对世间的贪欲和忧恼;于感受……于内心……于诸法,持续地观照着诸法而安住,是精勤的、正知的、具念的,已经调伏了对世间的贪欲和忧恼。舍利弗朋友,这就是一位无学的比丘应该具足安住的四念处。” 第五经。

904沙盖德因缘。具寿舍利弗坐于一旁后对具寿阿那律说:「具寿阿那律因修习、多修习哪些法而达到大神通?」「具寿,我因修习、多修习四念处而达到大神通。哪四种?具寿,于此,我于身随观身而住,热诚、正知、具念,调伏世间的贪忧;于受……于心……于法随观法而住,热诚、正知、具念,调伏世间的贪忧。具寿,我因修习、多修习这四念处而达到大神通。具寿,我因修习、多修习这四念处而能了知千个世界。」第六经。

905舍卫城因缘。于此,具寿阿那律召唤诸比丘:「诸贤友比丘!」「贤友!」那些比丘回答具寿阿那律。具寿阿那律说此:
Sāvatthinidānaṃ . Tatra kho āyasmā anuruddho bhikkhū āmantesi – ‘‘āvuso bhikkhavo’’ti. ‘‘Āvuso’’ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato anuruddhassa paccassosuṃ. Āyasmā anuruddho etadavoca –
35「具寿,这四念处修习、多修习后导向渴爱的灭尽。哪四种?具寿,于此,比丘于身随观身而住……于受……于心……于法随观法而住,热诚、正知、具念,调伏世间的贪忧。具寿,这四念处修习、多修习后导向渴爱的灭尽。」第七经。
‘‘Cattārome , āvuso, satipaṭṭhānā bhāvitā bahulīkatā taṇhakkhayāya saṃvattanti. Katame cattāro? 906一时,具寿阿那律住在舍卫城的沙喇喇咖拉。于此,具寿阿那律召唤诸比丘……(中略)……说此:「诸具寿,譬如恒河向东流、向东倾、向东斜。那时,有大群人拿着锄头和篮子前来:『我们将使此恒河向西流、向西倾、向西斜。』诸具寿,你们认为如何?那大群人能使恒河向西流、向西倾、向西斜吗?」「不能,具寿。」「那是什么原因?」「诸具寿,恒河向东流、向东倾、向东斜。它不容易被造成向西流、向西倾、向西斜。而那大群人只会得到疲劳与困扰的份。」

Taṃ kiṃ maññathāvuso, api nu so mahājanakāyo gaṅgānadiṃ pacchāninnaṃ kareyya pacchāpoṇaṃ pacchāpabbhāra’’nti? ‘‘No hetaṃ, āvuso’’. ‘‘Taṃ kissa hetu’’? ‘‘Gaṅgā, āvuso, nadī pācīnaninnā pācīnapoṇā pācīnapabbhārā. Sā na sukarā pacchāninnaṃ kātuṃ pacchāpoṇaṃ pacchāpabbhāraṃ. Yāvadeva ca pana so mahājanakāyo kilamathassa vighātassa bhāgī assā’’ti.

Katamenāyasmā anuruddho vihārena etarahi bahulaṃ viharatī’’ti? ‘‘Catūsu khvāhaṃ, āvuso, satipaṭṭhānesu suppatiṭṭhitacitto etarahi bahulaṃ viharāmi. Katamesu catūsu?
